What is the best software to burn MDisc DVD? I have an Lite-On ATAPI iHAS 122 F F EL06 DVD drive

Is it possible to test if a sata dvd drive is good without having to insert a disc?

I see that some Lite-On iHAS 122 models support M-Disc DVD but I have the Lite-On ATAPI iHAS 122 F EL06 model and I don't know if it supports M-Disc DVD burning. What is the best software to check and which software is good for updating the firmware of this drive?

I haven't burned a disc in ages, but Nero: Burning ROM was my go-to solution back then.

You can tell which discs a drive supports by looking it up on the manufacturer web page.

And you don't need to update your firmware, unless there is a fatal flaw with the drive that the manufacturer issued an update for.

I use CDBurnerXP.
It's very easy to use, comprehensive and has loads of all the right features.

I don't think MDisc needs special software, so whichever.
It doesn't. MDisc burning is handled completely automatically by the drive firmware. Nice to see someone else uses CDBurnerXP.

InfraRecorder showed promise, but development stopped early, and I think there's no BD support.

(Not that CDBurnerXP is feature-complete, but it's more mature.)

It seems to be plain old dvd dual layer and cd-r. No M-disc or blu-ray.

Are you looking to buy it, or have it and need it to work?

That discussion is old (2011), links to a dead site (though it's been archived in 2016), and newly purchased drives may have different firmware or hardware.
Also, cross-flashing isn't official updates. I don't think the OP is looking for anything adventurous.

But yes, knowing how to use a search engine is a useful skill. :)
FWIW, the official site is currently down.

What do you mean?
In terms of missing features, for example, one thing (as far as I recall) is that you can't control where on the disc files are placed.

Nero could.
It wasn't as fine-grained as some other software, but good enough for common uses.

Anyway, that was just an example.

cdburnerxp or imgburn? any configuration is software for best burning disc?
Avoid burning at maximum speed. That was always the advice for audio CDs and I applied it to all recording on discs. Probably, although never proven, there's some tradeoff between speed and quality. And you don't waste a lot of time if you choose one half of the maximum speed instead of maximum.

MDiscs are/were supposedly written at pretty slow speeds anyway.
No idea if further slowing down would improve the quality, or if the official slow speeds are already for that reason.

Assuming they behave like normal discs, including the possibility and relevance of low-level error scanning (like with Nero CD-DVD Speed / Opti Drive Control), it might be possible to assess the quality/speed relation by trying multiple write speeds on discs from the same package.

The MDisc asks for 4x the burning
speed. If I choose 2x slower, will it heat up for longer time and will it shorten the life of the disc?

Does cdburnerxp still receive updates? Imgburn has not been updated for a long time.

That's very likely just fine.

MDiscs are different than normal discs in both chemistry & durability. However, choosing a slow recording speed will ensure a more stable recording.
Does cdburnerxp still receive updates?
The last update was(if I recall correctly) in 2022 to update tech specs for a few newer drive that had been released. Updates for long lived software are not needed frequently because they are already very optimized and stable. CDBurnerXP is very stable and doesn't need frequent updates.

In CDBurnerXP where do I configure to check the quality of the recording and if it is not corrupted after burning? I did not find this option.

It's highlighted in the screenshot below.
CDBurnerXP-Verify.jpg

That check box is present no matter which recording method you use. Make sure it's checked and the program with automatically verify the data recorded to the disc is perfect.
