So if you answer the door, then bam, that's it? That's quite bad considering that I live in a flat, so I never know who's coming. Might be the pizza guy.

Although, they can look for a Sky box in my flat, they'll never find any. They won't find my TVs connected to anything, either.

The onus is on them to prove that you are doing the stuff they say you are doing. Its a witch hunt.

@kurosagi01 Your friend shouldnt have given his details (if he did) The fine wasnt his to pick up as he isnt the permanent resident there or the property owner.
I would have refused to pay and argued it in court out of principle if it came to that. Imagine the amount of egg on the BBC reps face in court if you arrived there and said to the judge "I dont live there" and records prove that you werent the permanent resident/property owner and just visiting a friend? The BBC would have nothing on you.

Innocent until proven guilty? Fair enough. They can try to prove their point, they won't succeed. I cancelled my licence not because I'm tight, but because the missus and I are genuinely not interested in live TV.

Yeah I don't remember the details as it happened years ago, but he ended up having to pay for it.
But yeah...Ring/doorbell camera are your friend now to check whoever knocking on your door.
I may need to buy a sticker to tell those leaflet and hellofresh peeps to leave me alone lol

yep, it's an outdated mode of getting entertainment. i haven't seen a commercial in like 12+ years for example, and I am never going back. my dad gets Netflix Ultimate so I get 4k and no ads still with that, the day it has ads though I will be moving on to something else. Life is too short for ads, not to mention it breaks the immersion of a good story.

Food Update:

Got some Morrisons fresh cookies today, they def have improved since when I first tried them. I got some frozen Indian food, butter chicken, tikki masala, only 2 quid each and its a decent size, just doesn't include the rice, nothing I can't microwave fast though in one of those rice bags, those are cheap. My favorite chips are the Morrisons branded Rosemary "taste the best" chips, got some more of those today.

Aero Bubbles peppermint as a snack after dinner is really satisfying, really enjoy these. Got some apples imported from France, those should be nice.

All in all it was a good haul today, more breaded fish, etc only 1 quid each and big chunk of fish really tastes good too as I mentioned before.

Only issue I have with the UK is your bananas have bruises, like it doesn't matter if they are green or yellow, doesn't matter what store you use, they are bruised. Must be some major potholes on the banana route the trucks drive, hell if I know, but I never have dealt with so many bruised bananas in my entire life. It's been consistent for my entire stay that the bananas just don't last as long as they do back home, and they are always bruised here, vs almost never back home.

banana's have to travel much greater distances to get to the UK than the US and I believe the distance and changes in temperatures impacts their overall quality when they get here. I think they are mainly transported by land and sea.

So it's gotten a bit messy since I was there last, in more than one way. The big-brother factor seems to have changed a bit.

Well, when were you last here? I've been steady here for 50 years, the changes I see are pretty typical of the rest of the world.

It's been a hot minute, more than a decade.

That's fair. Over here we have the parking Nazi's and nearly every damned government agency doing that intimidation crap every chance they get.
Not much has changed in a decade you was last here to be honest, its just more obvious.

Morrison's sells a juice made with real apples and elderflower extract, was on offer this week 2 cartons for 4 quid. It's quite nice with a few ice cubes.

I'm doing morrison's branded frozen tikki masala tonight for the first time, and a cheap bag of microwave jasmine rice. Should be interesting, I am quite the artisan taster when it comes to Indian food, so if it ends up being a winner with me I will be surprised considering it only cost 2 quid.

@Space Lynx - how's your English coming along?

Let's try some simple pronunciation...

Allo mate, how's the old trouble and strife? Eh? Got any pennies for the guy? How's the dick van dyke? Ain't no use crying about your wellies when your flippin' feet are pearly queens, init?

To be fair, almost none of that is real. But that's my understanding of how English people speak - at least according to 1980's shows made by insular Yanks.

talking to my niece is more difficult to understand to be honest, American kids have de-evolved to speaking only in acronyms, its so bad I just gave up even trying to talk to her, literally every word is an acronym.

I did hear a really rich looking lady here in England tell her friend she was with: "darling, I am far to busy to work today" and it was the most posh tone of voice I ever heard, cracked me up. prob def was some kind of nobility

On that note I did actually meet a noble lady in 2010 when I was in England then, in the gardens at some fancy estate that was open to the public, she was the rudest person I ever met in my life, literally talked to me as if I didn't even exist as a human, it was quite a wild experience. Good thing our ancestors decided to do away with that lot ruling is what I say, being told from birth you are better than everyone else must really do a number on the brains psychology, I don't hold it against them though, it's their nature, I'm just glad they aren't in actual power anymore.

Try butter chicken. My favourite curry ever. Or Vindaloo if you like a challenge. ;)

Tikka Masala is just the tip of the iceberg. It's only been invented to adapt Indian food to the English palate.

The UK as a whole is filled with different accent and slang to be honest. The media loves to over stereotype the "London" accent or the super posh accent. Most people in the middle part of England or even Wales or Scotland talk like that.
And that's the problem, imo. The world keeps advancing while we're stuck in the mud.
As I said to my partner earlier today as she's dealing with health issues.
Why is the UK so rubbish at everything.
Can't really get a GP appointment until you're dead or somehow got better.
A&E isn't really A&E as you probably again won't be seen until you're dead or got better.
The time it's taking to finish the HS2,other developed country would have built 5 of them or something .
There are so many more things wrong with the UK I cba to list them.
The UK has potential to be good but we love TKing ourselves.

That's because no one is incentivised to take a job in such sectors, or in any sector really. Everybody is on minimum wage for a start, and you have to be lucky for it to ever go up. Every company or organisation wants to get away with paying as little as possible and providing as little benefits as possible, so naturally, quality goes down because no one cares about a minimum wage job. They try to sell jobs on slogans like "job satisfaction" or "workplace atmosphere", but it's all a bit fat lie. We all have to pay bills at the end of the day. A lot of places pay you by the hour which is the next bullshit. No one wants to run around like a monkey 8 hours a day. People like doing a good job and going home, which isn't a possibility. And instead, all corporations and the government do is sit around and wait for the problem to sort itself out by people just magically wanting to work more for no reason whatsoever. It won't happen. This "nah, it'll be fine" attitude is the UK's greatest problem right now, imo.

Interestingly enough I was just reading an article on burnout, I'm not there, but definitely fatigued some days.

Down mid-way-ish is a list of companies (I'm guessing usa?) with burnout rating? %?

I think we as a society hugely overvalue work. Personally, I only see work as trying to spend 8 hours a day in as little misery as possible to earn a living.

The clichéd "make your hobby your work" trope doesn't exist. This is where many people fail in my opinion. They try to do something that they aspire to do and they don't realise when they're overworked because "it's something I'm supposed to enjoy, right?" I see this in some of my co-workers who always put 120% effort into everything, get stressed when things don't work out and are sick all the time.

No, thanks, I'd rather keep my aspirations elsewhere - in my family, friends and hobbies. In things that are actually worth doing. I don't live to work - I only work to live. Putting only as much thought and effort into work as is absolutely necessary for survival and not giving a damn about the results is the best attitude I can have. If the big corpos only give me the bare minimum, then why should I give anything more?

The only thing that still burns me out is the hours. Working 5 days a week isn't healthy. We should evolve past this stupid and wrong "hours spent at work = actual work" mentality. If I only have 15 hours worth of work to do for a week, it doesn't matter if I'm at work for 40 or 15, I'm only gonna get the same amount of work done. Then the bosses come with the same old boring "find something to do" crap, but we all know what that really means (walk around as if you were busy, and/or take some extra toilet breaks).

its so bad I just gave up even trying to talk to her, literally every word is an acronym.
Yeah, initialism is becoming a very serious problem.

Did she sound in anyway like this??

I love that show and simultaneously loath it. Never before, or since, has a show made me laugh at every turn and yet also made me want to reach into the screen and throttle the very life out of a character. What's worse is I know someone like Hyacinth stateside. Imagine, if you will, an American version of her, ala Roseanne Barr(ish), but as uptight, persnickety and full of herself as Hyacinth. Now imagine she's a real person, lives in your neighborhood and is constantly intruding on everyone's personal business... Yes... Let. That. Sink. In.

That is true that nothing is incentivised, nobody wants to tackle these "hard" jobs either and then the moment it gets given to some cheap "immigrant". A group of individuals start complaining, you just can't win sadly but even then they have no reason to come here when their home country living situation is probably better than ours anyway now lol.

I don't live to work - I only work to live. Putting only as much thought and effort into work as is absolutely necessary for survival and not giving a damn about the results is the best attitude I can have. If the big corpos only give me the bare minimum, then why should I give anything more?

I used to give a bit more than 100% but i've certainly slowed down now as i'm reaching a point in my career where I can sort of chill out a bit more or go at much slower pace.

talking to my niece is more difficult to understand to be honest, American kids have de-evolved to speaking only in acronyms, its so bad I just gave up even trying to talk to her, literally every word is an acronym.

I did hear a really rich looking lady here in England tell her friend she was with: "darling, I am far to busy to work today" and it was the most posh tone of voice I ever heard, cracked me up. prob def was some kind of nobility
Acronyms should be illegal.

Unfortunately, people are still being taught from birth that they're better than everyone else. But it isn't just the nobility now, but everyone. Look at the number of spoiled kids and rude teenagers these days. Jesus...

I used to give a bit more than 100% but i've certainly slowed down now as i'm reaching a point in my career where I can sort of chill out a bit more or go at much slower pace.
That's good. My career didn't bring me anywhere, and even if it did, I wouldn't be happy in it, so I just stopped giving a damn. My only pain is that I have to pretend that I care sometimes.

Let's away from the doom and gloom. Sounds like some sort of hostile takeover. Besides, it depends where you live. I've got no problems seeing my doc or dentist up here, and I'm in Glasgow. The UK is basically a postcode lottery of luck.

Anyway - back to English.

Pronounce these words:

Four
Door
Pour

Poor
Tour
Your

I mean, what the hell? English is a tormentor, the language of 'exceptions.'
