It's all speculative at this point, but looking at how much size discrepancy there is between 5090s compared to previous gen cards got me thinking. If SFF cards can do the job, why are there so many ginormous coolers? And with the card TBP so close to the max rating of the cable, why are none of the top models offering 2 connector options?
What do you all think?

575w is 1960 BTU/hr.

According to the calculator, that is almost exactly what you'd need to heat a 10x12 room to 75f with 10f outside temp.

So they have ginormous coolers :)
Edit: I voted thermally limited.

Both I would think. If the 575 watt power use is to be believed and the power connection is 600 watts that leaves very little room for any overclocking if any at all and heat wise that's one huge die and heatsink plus all those power regulation stages and Vram chips. That suckers going to pump out a good deal of heat . We will know soon enough with legitimate reviews coming up in not to long.

unleashed 5090 is double the 5080 or 720W and OC models should be up to 800W and we don't get that anymore, not that I would use it that way. some 2080 Ti with a 360W limit at 44% over stock.

Where are you getting those numbers from? The 12vhp+pcie would max at 675 and I can't imagine any board pushing power to the limit like that.

Not all of them.
Right now, they are all listed with the same power draw and clocks. I guess that's just a place holder and some cards will do more/less depending on their cooling performance, otherwise, what's the point of going 4 slot if a 2.5 can do the job?

To run at its maximum clock speed all the time, the 5090 probably needs 720W, effectively a double 5080, so it will be severely limited. But even a 4090 doesn't always exceed 350W in games despite a 450W bios. So it depends on the use case. Especially if you are doing DLSS because that will lead to a very unbalanced load on the shaders and lower power if I remember correctly 450 W with RT-only but drops to 350 W if you enable DLSS.

Thermal limited can be solved by watercooling or bigger case.
Power limited can only be solved by an additional 16 pin which I haven't seen yet.

Well considering the 4090 is melting cables already - and mine melted my connector at the PSU side making me finally replace my PSU... It will be exciting to see how this ends up with that crap connector pulling max wattage.

Undoubtedly thermally limited on air cooled cards. Liquid will be power limited.

Yes only AMD have done this before.... Fact of the matter is that 500 watt GPUs are excessive to most people

No way it's going to thermal throttle. Why would it?

But is your connector on the PSU side a 12vh? Doubt it, most psus are using proprietary stuff. That was totally a PSU issue not a gpu issue.

The 675 watt power limit kinda pisses me off. I was planning to do a nice overclock since I got a big watercooling system. I will have to find other ways

A ROG Mars is basically a modded card. My Shunt modded Titan XP can also draw 600W+ I should test what a 690 or 760x2 pulls after a voltmod.

every Nvidia card or any graphics card is power limited. thermally limited can be solved with water cooling or a better cooling solution, such as putting the radiator outside of the case, using “ refrigerator freezer technology” to cool the water…

It's totally a PSU issue. But a solid chunk of PSUs will have that issue.

Board power, as usual in almost all Nvidia gens. And then the coolers are tuned to that, while the FE might throttle.

Nobody said FE only... so there will easily be 5090's with thermal headroom.
