Can I add to this excellent list the ability to move around the taskbar and a few other UI tweaks? It just feels bad and short-sighted when the new OS takes away a basic UI feature that has existed for over 20 years in Windows.

The fact that so many power users resort to third party UI software to hack around Microsoft's arbitrary design choices should be a massive red flag to the execs.

How many people who avoid Win 11 do so because the UI is different (and that you CAN'T restore it to the old paradigm)? I would wager it is a substantial fraction.

The "people don't upgrade Windows" is entirely a self-created problem by Microsoft. Offer us a improved product that has zero regressions over the previous generation and we will move over without complaint. People did it for Windows 95 over 3.0/3.1, and for XP over Windows 95/98.

Edit = Thank you Frick for proving my point. The UI restrictions are leaving money on the table for Microsoft.
I hate it but I fully understand why they did it. After years of fixing client systems where they just randomly click on things and manage to break the taskbar by moving elements of it so all your active programs are smushed together on the left side, so you cant see whats open, or it gets filled with useless junk, I totally get why they locked that sucker down tight.

The average user of a PC is a total imbecile that would light water on fire if they tried to boil it. Still pisses me off, I'm tired of things being dumbed down to appeal to the common idiot, and it takes away easy profitable work. But I'm sure MS, OEMs, and retailers are sooo tired of these calls clogging their support systems.

wouldn't it be easier, smarter, and less conflict prone to have some option to return to the old style of things for "advanced users" or whatever you want to call it. You'd make everyone happy, normies would get their default options, you guys wouldn't have to troubleshoot stupid, and we could our old style back. It's already developed, the work was dumbing it down, why let the work go to waste?
Make it a advance feature click 3 times in whatever android style of thing if they still think normies could accidently find it.

Caused by WDef uninstall, perhaps ?!
No idea. The log file made a few references that just seem very odd and out of place. I would seriously recommend you backup everything you don't want to lose or can't lose and then do a fresh install.
EDIT: This advice presumes you want to jump up to 24H2 from whatever you're on. If you're fine where you are, then just plan on a fresh install next time to do a hardware upgrade.

Microsoft can easily toggle these features in the Control Panel and have the default option be the locked down UI experience. If someone is smart enough to root around in the Control Panel menus and sub-menus to reverse the default settings, they are perfectly OK to have the freedom to change the UI.

There are zero excuses here, it is just corporate arrogance at its worst.

Edit: Bomby569 said it in a more reasoned way than I did, but yes, THAT!

They should just give free upgrades to everyone, get rid of the stupid requirements (TPM2.0/SecureBoot/MS Account) and call it a day. Save themselves more PR nightmares.

I understand if they don't want to support processors without POPCNT, that makes sense to me. Everything else is just dumb.
The sad part is, if you bypass 2 of these things, it runs great. I can run W11 on my Ivy E just fine, even 24H2.

I bypass all three. I do not and will not use TPM, I do not and will not use bitlocker and finally I do not and will not be forced to use an ms account.

I'm running W10 anyway, and even after EOL in October, I might still do it. All this machine does is play games. How much of a security concern is there?

Depends on how fast critical bugs are found. I'd say keep your eyes glued to tech news and if something big comes out, then pay for the additional year of updates.

I feel the same way! I have no intention to "upgrade" to W11 since W10 is still the best OS for Gaming... But knowing that Microsoft are not going to add the Neural Engine that RTX 50s and Next-Gen GPUs are going to require for Next-Gen Games, it's kind of a let down. They should extend that EOL because a lot of people and even businesses are still on W10 and not not want to upgrade to W11

W11 could be a great OS but it's full of bloatware and depending on what version you're using is not really reliable. Both W11 23H2 and 24H2 have issues and even though 24H2 is supposed to be better, it is still a mess as of today and some games run better on 23H2... Also if you check reviews online 99% of games still run better on W10, so what's the point of having W11 as of now?!

Not much of one unless major security problems arise, which is unlikely. Still, yoiu should buy the Extended Security updates which will give you an extra year or so.

This.
then pay for the additional year of updates.
I am actively advising people to do that anyway. It's $30 for an extra year.

Money? I mean Microsoft isn't running a charity, in the end.
Microsoft are all about Cloud and AI now. They don't care much about Windows anymore, they just do it because they are the only real OS that everybody uses for x86 architecture and Gaming.

W7 & W10 were better OS than W11 is at the same point in time. They just added a better scheduling system into W11 but they could add it to W10 if they wanted to! They just want their Copilot and other bloatware spying on you 24/7.

I honestly can't wait for SteamOS to release on PC. It will probably be free (or cheap) and optimized for Gaming! Imo it could seriously threaten Windows for the best Gaming platform and even replace it if Microsoft keep doing their AI s*** that no gamer cares about.

weird mentioning steamos but praising windows

windows is like hdmi the number 1 drm platform. ignoring all apple products

wanna sell software or need drm? windows

e. hdmi 2.1 / netflix and other stuff i do not want or pay attention do.

win 10 is most likely dead. w11 is the defacto standard for work places. o365 also.

i do not pay attention to steam. crappy launcher with mass advertisement and cheap hardware. i think i read it is based on the arch linux distribution. 2006 i used arch. it was free to download and use.

I bypass all three. I do not and will not use TPM, I do not and will not use bitlocker and finally I do not and will not be forced to use an ms account.

IT seems bitlocker was never enabled on my w11 pro installation from may 2023 because I used an offline user.
Creating that offline user with the certified refurbisher w11 pro license was a hassle with the refurbished notebook i used for a week in november 2023. Nearly no guide worked for creating that offline user. Note: That offline user is the other way for the microsoft online account.

Microsoft did refuse to upgrade my system to w11pro 24h2 from 23h2 with the disabled tpm. I was forced to make a cmos reset and upgrade my uefi to get tpm to work again. I disabled it again after the windows 24h2 upgrade. According to certain "free software" tpm is disabled. Note: faulty asus uefi implementation am5 - x670 ~november 2024

I think tpm is just important for that bitlocker thing and that ms online account login feature. no issue for a gaming only windows with no bitlocker, no tpm and offline login user

a few days ago the monthly upgrade package for windows 11 from computerbase.de/download section worked again.

People should be aware of what that login user is. What that bitlocker is. And who owns the computer at the end of the day. what a recovery key is

--

advertisement does not matter. i do not use windows for productivity or the windows start menu. only time i use it is for the windows update pause for 5 weeks option.

All right. So I can I switched from Windows 11 24h2 to Windows 10 22h2 due to lower gaming performance.

5800x3d / RTX 4070.

Below is just an example: CP 2077 / High Preset / DOF / LF / MB / CA disabled. - 1440p - same hardware / same config / same debloat.

Windows 11:

Windows 10:

As you can see, Windows 10 has instances where is way faster. Every performance boost matters.

I only use my Desktop for Gaming (and browsing ofc), otherwise I have a Laptop to do everything else. My problem is that W11 is not reliable and W10 runs games better since you get more fps with it. And yes I think SteamOS would be perfect for Gaming only. They would have to make other launchers work though (EA Play, Ubisoft Connect, Rockstar Games Launcher, etc.) but for Gaming only Windows 11 is just worse (as of now). And even 24H2 doesn't always run better than 23H2 ! Actually Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 was actually crashing nonstop on 24H2... Pretty weird for a Microsoft game!
I'm pretty sure that if Microsoft made an optimized Windows for Gaming only (and browsing online at least...), most gamers would switch right away.

All right. So I can I switched from Windows 11 24h2 to Windows 10 22h2 due to lower gaming performance.

10 might be faster, but I still like 11 better.
