Possible to use NVCleanstall but also use Nvidia App?

With the new shift to Nvidia App, is it possible to still make use of NVCleanstall for a somewhat stripped-down driver install, but not so much that it breaks Nvidia App?

For example, can you still strip out Shadowplay? Or is there anything else that breaks?

Basically, I want to use the new Nvidia App as they're phasing out the older Control Panel, but I also don't want all the gunk the regular driver comes with, hence Cleanstall.

What's the status?

yes, there's a test build here on the forums that does exactly that

My apologies - I thought that test build was still in its infancy and wasn't fully working with the new Nvidia App.

In regards to driver updates while using the Nvidia App - would it be safe to let NV App handle the driver updates after the first initial driver install was performed by NVCleanstall? In other words - does NV App ONLY instal the driver, or does it also install the gunk that comes with the regular driver package too? I hope that makes sense. Or will we have to keep using NVCleanstall and avoid using the inbuilt NV App driver update?

that seems unlikely, i'd guess it installs everything automatically. But no way to know for sure until someone tests it

Ahh, yeah that's a bummer. We can't have our cake and eat it too... which kind of makes NVApp a pain in ass, because it'll be needed for the upcoming DLSS 4 features

Just use NVCleanstall to update the drivers like we all have for many years?

The current driver installer only updates what you have already installed. Hopefully the new app does the same.

@rozplay If you want just the driver updated, the easiest way to achieve that is to never update it yourself. Windows Update will detect the outdated driver and push updates just for the driver.

But the update rate will be quite low? what's the latest NV driver on Windows Update?

Says 560.94 for me. About to install the new app, see what it's about, since I booted up Windows for the first time this year.

This is fixed with 1.18 and should be working perfectly now

That's awesome news!

Thanks for your hard work Wizzard, you are a star for all you've done for the community.

With 1.18, is it possible to kind of.... have the best of both worlds? Does the app allow you to still install/use the new Nvidia App, but also remove some of the bloat that normally comes with it? Such as shadowplay or anything else?

Yes, you can always exclude those packages, but some features wont work as expected, or the whole app won't work. When you select just NVApp, it will ask whether you want to install its dependencies, too. If you say yes, the App will work fully, including ShadowPlay and Overlay

That makes sense that those features wouldn't work. I wish Nvidia provided a way to not install that extra bloat / install features on a case by case basis.

It sounds like we don't know exactly which components are safe to remove without breaking the app itself? I mean - if you remove Shadowplay, and Shadowplay alone doesn't work - that makes sense. But how do we know what parts will actually break the rest of the app?

I've tested them all one-by-one. You can exclude the legacy game panel and just game profiles will stop working, you can exclude frameview and just the overlay will break, the rest are all required iirc

How about the new DLSS functionality? I guess we won't know until the new version of their App + drivers are released

That's part of the core driver. Unless you mean the DLSS overrides in the app? those are part of the game profiles, legacy control panel required (i think the game profile data is in that package, which is why nvapp requires it)

Wow - so in order to use the DLSS overrides in the app, you also require the old NVCP / legacy control panel?

That seems a bit wasteful especially when they're trying to phase out the NVCP.

I don't suppose you can use those DLSS overrides without the new NV App?

Yes, I'm sure they'll move the profiles data eventually

No you can't, I tried

I'd hope selecting dlss version would be possible with NVProfileinspector. But someone would need to do a new reference.xml or customsettingnames.xml file.

Man i hated GFE and now we have this new App. Guess i hit the wrong button as it auto optized all my games. F me had to go back and manually change them all. Thankfully not to many installed games. Was always a minimalist and hated telemetry or any other bloat. So luv nvcleanstall. But it;s of limited use now if we're sort of forced to use the new App for a bit? So we can uncheck frameview only. I actually do use that one lol. I do like the Installation tweaks. So looks like i keep using it. Just wish nvidia didn't sort of handicap it.

Always appreciate the work on this tool. Thanks Wiz.

yeah this is super annoying. For next version I want to look into defaulting this to off, also the telemetry in about

at least not with 1.17.
cleaned 566.36 down to drv/SP/app, and nothing was auto-optimized when i went to the app.

When you install it, it will show three screens the first time it's opened. 2nd one is "do you want to optimize your apps"

Not sure what you mean. My employers always force this, I have it enabled at home on my desktop and laptop. Never had a problem with it.
Of course, when I want the latest and greatest, I install/update the drivers myself. But since I cannot hope to keep up with the tons of drivers Windows installs, it's nice to know the drivers I forgot about are not lagging much behind.

so you game on your work pc with a dgpu?

well look at MS track record of updates not regularly messing up things, incl drivers, isnt that great.
having win install drivers without knowing if it matches the actual hw installed or if its a generic match is another thing,
ignoring some drivers dont allow rollback/being replaced with "older" once installed, so good luck with trging to fix thru removing and installing previous one, when win already downloads and installs the problem latest one.

the past 4y have shown me, update being paused until tbey were released for a few weeks, and drivers blocked from being updated, was a good idea.
