Paper launch 5080/5090 - is this a problem for Nvidia?

It seems clear that availability has been extremely poor. Given this is often the case for the first few weeks of a new generation card (if we accept this is a new generation) that may not be shocking. However, Hardware Jesus at Gamers Nexus observes this is a problem that may persist for some months. Now, Nvidia cut production on some 4000 series cards to promote better uptake for the 5000 series (at least that's my interpretation). It certainly is difficult to get a 4090 without feeling violated. But with poor availability of 4000 series cards and now 5000 series cards, what is Nvidia selling? The obvious answer is they're not selling to gamers. They're all onboard the AI train. What if that train derails? What if AI companies decide to cancel that expensive order? Does a 3 trillion dollar company care?

It isn't much different from most launches If in 3-4 months it's still hard to get a gpu.... Sure. People always freak out for some reason when stuff sells out on launch day been happening since like the 600 series and probably before that.

This would only be a problem if Nvidia had a competitor.... AMD isn't dropping gpu's till late March and that is just pre orders don't be surprised if there is a flood of 5070/5070ti at the same time.

Nothing spacial this time. Non avilable at lunch is the way it gos the past few years. You can find many reasons why each time the same way you can find ‘amazed’ and “how can it be” posts each time.,

Won't prices go higher if it's like this? I've been out of the loop for a long while and decided an upgrade to a 5090 from a 1080TI would be worth it. The prices are already high and if they go any higher I'm not sure I'll continue with the PC build.

I think nvidia rushed the release a few months ahead of their original schedule due to Trump's tariffs so they could sell all their current stock without them, which means TSMC didn't have enough time to produce enough to satisfy the demand.

I've been there at 3 and 4 series launch as well and this one was almost as bad as the 3 series launch during covid, the 4 series launch was not as bad. I got lucky and managed to get a 5090 at MSRP but i can understand the anger and frustration of other people.

Although i dont think this situation is going to stay like this for long, there is no production issues like they had been during covid time so even if there is a shortage TSMC must be pumping cards like crazy right now

Which means the next launch is on time. And the whole FOMO obsession was for nothing. People lining up are mostly scalpers. Let them have it.

Some hardware is in high demand or hardly available in central europe in past few years.
prices for aio cpu coolers / power supplies skyrocket for a while. Who cares if only DRAM and NVME are cheaper?

At the end of the day - high price - or no product at high price. No purchase for myself.

-- I see the risk long term that people will forget about pc gaming and move on. PC gaming is complicated. We did not had any android tablet or smartphones games back in the day. How many cheap nintendo switch for 130€ can you pay for a graphic card for 1300€ ? Than you also need the other parts for a desktop gaming pc.

Pretty much this. Sadly consumers are not important to NVIDIA and haven't been since the crypto boom.

If you were nVidia, why would you waste time and allocations from TSMC on consumer toys, when you can sell "big boy things" at many times the markup to "AI" obsessed corporations? I believe they keep consumer presence as "plan B" in case their main market slows down.

It's a problem for their board partners because they prepare all of these ads and marketing effort for not much in return if the supply simply doesn't exist.

Pretty much this. Sadly consumers are not important to NVIDIA and haven't been since the crypto boom.

At the same time, they don't dare exit the consumer business. AI could go belly-up just as sudden as crypto has.

Probably. Hating on Nvidia or Intel has been internet's favorite pastime for years, not just the last 72 hours.
