So my editing/gaming machine is getting a tad long in the tooth in some areas. Specs in sig.
I could either:
Buy an MSI Mag z790 Tomahawk and 48GB Team Force 6400mhz cl32 DDR5

or

Buy an intel 14700k

I have scoured sites, videos with tons of benches and since they cost about the same... $330 US, I am torn which way to go.
And I know that Intel's new CPUs/Chipsets are out, but Im not in a hurry to jump on board (I have several rigs and upgrade often, bit by bit), and no, I wont go AMD.

Thoughts on my choice are appreciated. If you went either route and/or have links you could share, that'd be great.

Either get a CPU or a MB and Memory? Don't you need all three?

Seems like he's debating keeping the 12900K and upgrading the board and memory or upgrade the CPU to a 14700K on the board he's using. I think CPU would generally help a bit more than system memory normally would provide for a lot of programs, but could be better off saving a bit more for a 14900K.

Well it's the same board series, same manifacturer. PCie is 5.0 on both of them and NVME drives at Gen4. Generally I am up for new tech and I'd go for the newer chipset instead of upgrading the CPU.

I wouldn't trade to the de facto 2nd best Intel CPU to a problematic one which may break even after those bubblegum BIOS fixes.

What do you mean long in the tooth? Cause if it's actually bad, there is no CPU that will give you a lot of performance over the 12900k.. Maybe a 13900k will be 40% faster in nothing thats extremely multithreaded but that's about it.

No. But then if I was satisfied with basic hardware I wouldn't be here would I? ;)

Long in the tooth means old. Im looking for higher clock speeds (for gaming) or more thread performance (for video editing). Im curious what will be the best boost for the money and if I do upgrade? If I did go the MB/ram route, then I would upgrade the CPU down the road. If I go for the CPU instead, the next upgrade will be the new platform.

if you go new mobo and ram are you dead set on staying with intel I know I wouldn't be not with their current track record of bad CPU's

Save for a platform upgrade in a year with Zen 6/ARL successor, which is rumoured to have a 40 core config.

Since you get to keep the mobo and ram the best bang for your money will be the 13/14900k, purely down to math.

I mean you said it yourself. If you need thread performance then the CPU is the way to go. When editing are you reaching a ram

The gain is 10% either way.

You gain 10% getting just the ram and board.

You gain 10% getting just the cpu and nerf it on ddr4.

I'd do the board and memory first. Later add the cpu for 10% more performance.

If you overclock, 14700K will reach higher frequency, so more than 10% there. If you can sustain 5.8ghz P-cores (or faster), you'll never look back at the 12900K.

GL with your choice!

Advice, like in #10, be more patient. Especially when have not big budget for modern enthusiast grade hardware or have preferences for a particular brand of manufacturer of many chips, frequently changing sockets and MB chipsets.

Since when is 12900K basic hardware...? Don't answer it, a rhetorical question.

Anyhow, I second everyone on skipping this upgrade until something really faster slots into your budget. 12900K @ 5.4 wouldn't lose to whatever Intel offering in gaming significantly enough for you to notice. In workloads... Unless you're getting paid for this. But then again, if you are then why half measuring? 14900K(S) makes far more sense for this matter.

After checking your system specs I'm adamant 300 quid won't help it. I choose spa, massage, manicure, and some gokart fun.
