using YT in firefox here, no pauses, no resource hog, everything smooth and fine. Use adblock cof cof as soon as i open YT ublock has already 50+ stuff blocked. Sponsorblock is also nice. It's the free premium version.

The problem is that OP is using a 18 year old computer :)

Chromium-based browser
garbage browsers and anti privacy

libre wolf and ubo for the win. containers, privacy badger, no script also is good to have.

also harden libre wolf or ff but dont use it as is, EVER!!!! theres tons of stuff that can be tweaked in settings and about:config. It took me like an hour to configure LW. FF leaks like a seive as installed. it is not pro privacy out of the box and thats cause google made them their bich.

Why not just entirely disable that filthy nonfree Javascript code and browse using the terminal with w3m or links on your fully libre and free (as in freedom) GNU/Linux system?

That computer should be able to display youtube just fine. Although it would have been good style to say what CPU specifically you have, OP.

You... do realise that Chromium itself is just an engine/framework and that it IS an open-source initiative? Sure, I have many issues with Google, but nothing stops one from using pure Chromium releases and tweaking them to be rather secure, if one wants. There are obvious difficulties with that, but still. Chromium itself is currently the best browser framework availiable, hands down.

It's a Xeon E5450, it's in his specs. And no, while DISPLAYING YT might be fine, for actually playing videos he will really be better off with x264ify. That CPU is just not good enough to software decode VP9 and AV1 that YT is pushing. Shit, my 5900X is actually ramping up back and forth in YT when a AV1 video is served. Those new formats really prefer to have a GPU hardware decode.

How is it? I'm leery of anything (a) Chromium (b) advertising that heavily, but I'd be interested to know what your experience has been so far. I do know that they've baked in an exemption for uBo such that it won't be nerfed in 6 months when Google kills off the WebExtensions v2 API in Chromium.
If you're considering Opera, take a look at Vivaldi. Built by the original Opera creator, lots of niceties included.

in old PC's without modern features/instruction sets, YT can indeed take them to their knees i can confirm that, i have an old i7 and it struggles.

FF leaks like a seive as installed. it is not pro privacy out of the box and thats cause google made them their bich.

i need more information on this. I use brave but i also use tor and firefox and a few others. But my main one is firefox

Just display YT or actually play videos, like it's supposed to? Keep in mind without hardware acceleration YT videos will drop frames like crazy & that ancient CPU also doesn't help! Anything other than H.264(videos) would probably not work, only rendering through CPU.

YouTube doesn't require a lot in terms of CPU power. Any dual core will suffice for low bitrate AVC/H.264 streams, with a little help from the GPU. In fact, I was able to get smooth 360p with the slowest 1c/2t 32-bit desktop CPU.

It takes a bit more grunt for the contemporary VP9 1080p60, but a fast dual core can still do it when paired with a VP9 capable card.

And last I checked my FX@4.5 GHz could do VP9 4K60 without any assistance from the GPU.

Opera is chrome. Everything is chrome but Firefox and it's few sister browsers like Waterfox and Librewolf. Even Edge is chrome. They all use similar amounts of ram because they are all chrome ...

If you're considering Opera, take a look at Vivaldi. Built by the original Opera creator, lots of niceties included.

Vivaldi is chrome, and uses thus uses similar amount of ram. They are all chrome.

Best browser for the best mix of security, speed and stability is LibreWolf. I don't think anything compares to it, but most people don't know about it.

If you are running uBlock Origin that may be the issue. I had to disable all my Firefox extensions a while back while troubleshooting one of them that was causing random crashes, in the course of it disabled uBo, and wow was YouTube browsing noticeably snappier, plus the YouTube tab processes used waaay less RAM.

But of course, YT with ads is unusable, so my "solution" is that when my YT browsing experience starts to degrade, I just go into Process Explorer and kill whichever tabs are using 3+ GB RAM. That generally sorts it out for a couple of days.

I use it how ever once the page load i just press next video and the back button and it skips the ad, i have no issue using FF either with it.
