Pity it comes with Denuvo DRM. I'll wait to see if they drop it further down the road.

Honestly I would have thought people liked that because a) people can play early if they want and b) if the people playing early think the game sucks other people can cancel preorders and just not buy it on release.

As for me this is the first Civ I've been interested in because it borrows some stuff from Humankind. "My" Civ is Civ3 (and Alpha Centauri) and all the others I've tried have been too much like it and and also not different enough. They were just different enough that it wasn't like Civ3, meaning I had to relearn the games, but they were also just similar enough that it felt like just another Civ game meaning I might as well just play 3 instead.

After BE and Civ 6 my faith in Firaxis has dropped like a stone. That, and the inevitable stream of shitty DLC that follows VII just turns me off... there's not enough meat here to be all interested.

Still... will prob check this out when its feature complete. The new systems don't look bad indeed

They don’t look bad on paper, but as someone who played Humankind and saw the absolute mess that was that game I can say that the whole idea of a “culture swap/change” is utterly nonsensical and just doesn’t work in a context of a Civ-like. The fact that Firaxis is creatively bankrupt enough to pilfer ideas from what is by far the worst Amplitude game is… concerning. Then again, the whole series peaked with IV mechanically.

Same here, even though I put down over 400 hours trying to enjoy Civ 6, some of the mechanics are just no fun (districts: why?) and Civ 5 makes me happy in a way that Civ 6 simply can't.

For what its worth, I have heard that VII is supposed to be like a hybrid of V and VI. Mechanically closer to V and graphically closer to VI.

I'm hoping to catch a streamer play it. I never got into Civ - I tried VI and gave up in frustration - ended up going back to Crusader Kings 2.

If CK2 is easier to figure out than your game, you probably need to work on your tutorial.

I might have to try one of the older Civ games, but I doubt I will bother.

If you're willing to try it out again, myself being a Civ player from the very first one, I would definitely recommend Civ 5. Not that there aren't better Civs before it, but because the older ones might be harder to enjoy on modern hardware and also because Civ 5 simplified a lot of the mechanics that existed on previous versions, to the point that I hated it for being so vanilla coming from Civ 4. However, to a new player, the vanilla version of Civ 5 will have a simpler learning curve and once you get the hang of it, just try it out with the DLCs enabled for added depth and fun.

Right... I hope not... So graphically stagnant and mechanically too? Mkay

Unironically, I would recommend Old World. It mixes solid 4X mechanics with some CK stuff. Might be something up your alley. By far the best 4X game of the last few years, Humankind and the last two Firaxis abominations don’t come even close.
