It's all of them being crazy greedy... nvidia ARE crazy greedy, but then you have aibs being even more so (during crypto boom aibs sold all stock directly to massive mining farms...), and then to top it off you have shops selling all stock to scalpers prior to launch...

Honestly, i reckon that as long as "graphics cards" are universal purpose accelerator cards, then this situation will just become worse. We need purpose built gaming graphics cards, that only gamers are going to buy - if the situation is to ever become normal again for gamers. The current trend will end up killing pc gaming if it continues.

This is the retail price in Norway for the RTX 5090 and 5080. This is in Norwegian kroner. So basically, almost $2900, and $1800.
Yeah, a lot of people are complaining about the prices, including myself. The solution? Don't buy one. Vote with your wallet and don't show NVidia the love on this gen of cards.

Never going to happen in general.
People are buying at x2 of MSRPs like their life is dependent upon them...
Sad, hilarious... take your pick
A little bit of both maybe

Those are people who know what they want and are willing to pay the price. Some of them are less than smart, but for many it's pocket change.

True, there are many pc enthusiasts for whom 5k on a gpu is pocket change - but for the vast majority of people it aint. And this trend will end up killing pc gaming if it is allowed to continue to spiral out of control.

I mean as long as there are people that camping outside of microcenter or go online to buy at whatever price with their "pocket change" there is not going to be any solution.
People with too much money (not all of them apparently) are playing the inflation game and always will be...

If it's the best you can buy, who cares? Why do you care about what people spend their money on?
I don't, hence why I said who cares if its 10k or if it's 40k people can spend their money however they want.

I care because it affects everyone, as merchants and manufacturers will continue to pump up prices on everything as long as fools continue to buy.
It's a luxury item, hold off until they come to their senses and lower prices. This is why we can't have nice things.

People are getting more and more unaware of what the actual value of such things is. In real life. They are acting like kids or hypnotised people.

For instance, I'd never pay for a new phone more than 300 €, because:
- it's a fuck*n phone, I use it for text messages, instant messaging, emails, web browsing and calling
- I already destroyed few phones (accidental drops) and it surely is less pain to accidentally destroy a 300 € phone than iPhone for $1600. iPhone does the same job as any 300€ phone and I would be hitting my head to wall for being so damn stupid that I gave such amount of money for such thing that can get destroyed in literally one second. What else could I (and my family) had for that money instead?

People are selfish, they forget about purpose of things and whether they really need it. Of course they want it. The motto of today's era is to consume whatever they throw at you. I've seen few quite bad instances of consumption disease among young people - people save money to purchase things they want but they are able to literally starve to do so, having one poor meal per day. In the long run, what they do to their body, will fire back on them when they get older.

For the very same reason I don't get people that are able to spend hundreds or thousands for clothes or shoes. I can afford to buy it, I just don't see the reason. I mean there are hundreds of better ways to spend that money. Then there are things what others really need. Instead of paying 50€ for a fuckin stupid branded t-shirt, maybe let's buy 10€ t-shirt at Tesco and donate money to dog shelter or to charity. Any cotton t-shirt does the job, you won't support greedy companies this way and you can give rest of money somewhere where it matters - charity or just give to someone in your family or your friends circle that are currently facing money issues.

Current problem is consumptional society. You are not just anyone, you're someone and you deserve things, right? Our children did not see life without internet, without cars. They don't know what threat a war is. And yet our ancestors lived before us and valued money they earned other way than teenagers do today. Today we're doing so fuckin well that we literally don't know what to do with ourselves out of happiness.

the "you do you" is all fine. The problem is when you live in the land of idiots, so what they do ends up impacting you, so that's why people care. They distort the market for those of us that don't have a oil daddy.

So you can get away from this particular example, who cares if whales go nuts on mtx on games? right. The problem was the proliferation and shittification of games for all of us.

Either way I wouldn't buy a 5000 series. I always skip a generation. So either I will buy a 6000 series when they are available or see what AMD comes up with. Though I have to say, I am pretty happy with my 4090.

Isn't Astral abbreviation of something else Astronomical? Given it also has Liquid version makes perfect sense.

so many gaming setups with 4090, i'm sure nothing changed. And non gamers would have a lot less patient to wait in line in the night for a gpu.

A little bit of both maybe
It's neither, it's just life. Millions of people just in the US alone splurge on things like luxury cars, huge mansion houses, expensive country club memberships, suite tickets for the local sports teams. The only problem with a hobby (like PC gaming) getting popular is now you got people in the top 5% income bracket interested and they aren't interested in bang for your buck or value for the dollar they just want performance.
Those are people who know what they want and are willing to pay the price. Some of them are less than smart, but for many it's pocket change.

Senior engineers and C suite bought them

Some people just discovered the fundamental offer and demand dynamics, that's fun
Exactly. It's not like people are pulling risky high interest loans to buy these cards, it's just people that have lots of disposable money are now interested because the hobby is becoming more popular. Every hobby I've ever done in the last 15 years has gone through phases of this (PC gaming, trading cards, retro cars, vintage guitars, golf).

Some people either don't work a day job or know what an actual hobby is I feel lol. I just did an all nighter re-arranging my watercooling setup, flushing, draining, filling for hours on end, would be like watching paint dry for some people but for me it was worth every second.

If you want to have a laugh at ridiculous prices for the 5090s, check out fleabay I saw some up to $10,000AU, that's roughly $7,500US, maybe slightly less
