But the latter is a component of the former. After all, with 0 marketshare you have nobody buying your product and therefore 0 possible profit! Yes, it is possible to have a very small marketshare but massive profits, if you are in a very niche industry and/or have a captive target market (e.g. ASML to TSMC) - which is not the case for consumer products. So therefore in the consumer space, it is entirely correct to say that companies live on their marketshare.
You can also have better profit if you minimise expenses - which is exactly why we'll only have two RDNA 4 chips. The burger van in the corner doesn't have to compete with McDonald's for market share.

Sure, market share is important in AMD's case, but not important enough to sell GPUs at a loss.

The burger van in the corner will also be spending all of his working days to keep his head above sea level, and will never become even a local chain of restaurants. But yes you can keep flipping burgers. Yay?

I don't disagree about selling at a loss, but realistically, AMD is stuck between the furnace and the tongs. Another issue for their burger van situation is the competing burger van called Intel, flipping burgers at a lower price and with a few new sauces on the menu.

Ok, bad example. Take a popular local chain of 2-3 restaurants. With that, you still don't compete with McDonald's, but you can make a decent living. Probably way more decent than your average minimum wage McDonald's worker can.

Intel only has one lower midrange card that is barely available. Their burger flipping doesn't pose a threat.

If AMD keeps focusing on last gen's performance and Intel keeps incrementally moving forward, you can rest assured they'll beat AMD at some point. They have a ways to go though I agree. Probably will be buying a new burger van before it happens, too.

But I think the burger van example is a perfect one, its what AMD's trajectory really is for PC dGPU: they have shrunk the menu down to TWO items and neither is cream of the crop. Maybe they'll become a local restaurant chain again with UDNA and a real menu? On the console side though, they're the McDonalds.

Damn this analogy works miracles, much better than car comparisons.

I'll see whether Intel is moving forward when (if) they release the B770. All we have from them in this generation is one randomly released lower midrange card that mostly isn't available, and no news on the rest of the product stack other than "it's coming". They seem to me like a burger van that is only open on weekends because the owner has a Monday to Friday job at a factory, but only on some weekends because the owner also likes to party on a Friday night sometimes. Competition without consistency isn't competition.

They can disrupt the market without setting their heads on fire. Undercutting your competitor does not imply bankrupting yourself to do so.

Correct @Assimilator and AMD makes about 50% on their RDNA cards where Nvidia makes 100%.

Intel makes way less but ain't really loosing money if I remember correct and AMD ain't afraid on their Radeon line up to make even less money to undercut Nvidia.

What is just a bit of a bummer sometimes is that AMD launches a Radeon product that is a bit higher than their msrp and then 2-4months later cutting prices because of low sales instead of starting at the msrp that was the original gold.

I really really hope that AMD this time has manages to stock on RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT and they go for around 599USD for the XT and 499USD for the RX 9070.

It's sad about the delay yes, but if this means drivers and everything just falls in the right slots and nothing really goes wrong maybe stock don't sell out would be a plus without many next to none faulty cards not like RTX 5090/80 cards already having problems.

There was an article that the Linux driver was almost ready... In July last year. I don't know what's taking them so long.

A. They found a last minute bug causing instability, black screens etc.

B. Performance was extremely variable with some games beating a 4080 and other losing to a 7900GRE.

C. They caught wind of Nvidia lower than expected pricing and got spooked

D. It's AMD they almost never make sense with gpu launches.

My bet it's one of these with C/D being the most likely lol.

I really dont believe they have any issues with drivers. I think they got spooked by Nvidia's price plus, they knew the cards that they were competing against weren't coming out till end of Feb/start of March. Why not sure up the dam so to speak by making FSR 4 a complete product and giving RDNA 4 some detailed love since it is a stop gap generation.

Bankrupt? Where? I think some of yall need to really go do some research. Their gpu division(overall) has made the most money ever in company history.
Not in dgpu, igpu yes.

Selling at a loss is not logical, but if you have other products that can subsidize that one in particular, its a valid course of action. Especially if that failing product can take down the whole division.

I havent read anything stating this, but I am pretty sure that Dr. Lisa Su might have given the Radeon division an ultimatum, fix this or we will abandon it.

I imagine that would be just the discrete graphics, the iGPU, consoles, professional and Data center gpus will be spared.

We have to understand how bad it is for AMD in the gpu market right now and they need to start acting desperately, especially for our sake (the ones that dont like to give Ngreedia money).

Not in dgpu, igpu yes.
Dgpu sales is not bad either and at the end of the day, they're all grouped together. Regardless AMD is not really losing, we are. We the consumers aren't making the proper decisions when it comes to purchases. Hence the current market. I just watched a dude blame AMD because his 7900xtx system was not running spiderman 2 properly, only to find out that it was his ssd that was the issue. The comment section ripped AMD a new one yet no apologies for the incorrect initial assumption.

They got spooked by nv's 5% perf uptick on the 5070ti.
