hi

i think i have a problem with my new 9800 x3d,

the cpu is overheating like crazy and is throttling

when i run programm like prime95 and cinebench my cpu go over 90C and throttle to 5100 mhz instead of 5.2 ghz. the cpu was 1.2V in cpu-z

i tried undervolting and my cpu is now at 1.120V and can run cinebench properly at 76-78C but prime95 is still a problem, and the cpu only go to 4.7 ghz.

my motherboard is probably giving to much voltage to the cpu, what is the stock voltage for an 9800x3d at 5.2 ghz

my cooling is an 420 AIO

If prime is running avx 512 then the chip is designed to throttle at 4.7Ghz.

Your temps are pretty high for a 420 AIO, though, so I would check pump speed and mounting, you're getting worse temps I do on air.

Air is better than AIO,

, i think the mounting is fine, my temps in idle are fine 30-40C i think i lost the silicon lottery again. what is your voltage

my temps are that bad ?, i don't have the plastic, this AIO was cooling an ryzen 7700x before

i think i just got a bad cpu. for fun i was overcloking a lot of old E8400 E8500 and E8600, some of them were cool and some where hot like hell

if your 9800 x3d is as good one and mine is a bad one, i will get hotter temps even if my cooling is on par.

Run your benchmarks with HWiNFO64 (sensors mode) and observe the value of CPU PPT (W). Your 420mm AIO should be able to handle at least 200W and keep the CPU no more than 80C as long as the room and PC case temperatures are reasonable.

I suspect contact or TIM issues if everything else is ok.

Is this happening from day one of the system? Is the whole system new or just the CPU?
Are you sure that AIO’s pump is running as it should?

My AIO can oly handle about 140W(ARCTIC Liquid Freezer II 420), and that was the same for my old ryzen 7700X, AIO are not as good as air cooler but are easier to install

i guess i will buy the nh-D15,

i cannot see the pump speed on this AIO' i guess it's running at max

It can definitely handle more, but your case/ambient temps are going to be probably the biggest bottlenecks. The Arctic 420 is easily among the top 5% of coolers out there, not counting custom loops.

im using the artic freezer iii 360 no issues. check your fans position intake/exhaust etc.
you dont have to buy exclusively the noctua. Try the Thermalright variants they are pretty good for ryzen cpus.
In case you decide to change case too check the fractal north xl that has support for big aios and amazing airflow

Go to bios and enter the fans section. You can set fan profiles and check the pump speed there.

You'll be fine. AIO pump probably turning at minimum until the cpu gets hot and by then it's too late. Tune it like you would your case fans.

That is if the block is mounted snug and square.

Good Luck!

Sorry but there is something wrong with your configuration.
I have the exact same AIO and here is a test at 197W with 5900X.
Air to the radiator is about 26C
CPU avg temp at 79C.
I understand that the 5900X is a dual CCD CPU so the heat is spread across 2 chiplets and easier to dissipate but still 140W should be pretty easy to handle for this AIO.

Actually it depends on the curve the user sets for the PWM controller.
At 45% PWM the pump is at full speed and Rad fans at ~1000rpm which can handle a lot of heat, speaking from experience.

Because this AIO is powered by a single 4pin cable, you can’t see pump speed or VRM fan speed anywhere. Only rad fan speed is visible which max out at 1600-1700rpm.
pump speed max out at 2000rpm and vrm fan at 3000rpm

What board header are you using for powering the AIO and what is the CPU temp when you’re in BIOS?

Is it CPU_Fan1 or CPU_Fan2/WP_3A?

CPU_Fan2
That’s normal and Fan2 is the proper one.

Your ambient/room temp?
Is the AIO rad as intake to the case airflow or exhaust?

Also, I’m using the offset mount option for Ryzen so the block is centered above the core CCDs. I’m not sure how much better that is as I never test it without it.

You have something terribly mis-configured. That would keep it plenty cool if everything was right.

i have the same problem with my my 7700x, my fan are noisy as hell so is not that. the cooler is running at max, the cooling is insufficient. and you can't realy mess up the installation.

you have a noctua nh-d15 , that is a lot better than my AIO, how much wath can you use with your 7700X

Never gets above 80 in prime 95.

idles around whatever ambient is at the moment.

Yes, you can mess up the install.

Throw it all away and get something else. That certainly makes more sense than checking your work.

What kind of clocks do you guys typically see with 98X3D?

In game all of my cores are running at 5500-5600MHz, with a few bouncing off the 5850 limiter.

you have a noctia cooler,
You can have uneven, improper mounting pressure with the screws that hold it on. You can apply too much/too little or poor quality TIM. You can have the pump or fans not at sufficient speed to dissipate the produced heat. There are lots of way to mount it incorrectly. Just because the screws are all more or less in the right place doesn't mean it was done right.

A big-ass (420mm) radiator and 3x140mm fans has as much or more cooling capacity than basically any air cooler. if it's cooling is insufficient, you've done something wrong, or it is broken.
