Every penny you spend on it is a penny that should have been spent on getting something newer.

Check out 2ndbazaar. They have really cheap refurb laptops. Can get a better laptop than the one that you have for the cost of a hard drive.

It's a Pentium 3 based laptop. I'm going to assume the use case is not as a general purpose laptop for everyday use. Also I'm going to say that the machine at this point is actually increasing in value.

Issue is booting from it through firmware, if the mobo firmware is not aware to make cf/usb bootable, it wont be able to.

It's not necessary, like i mentioned earlier the CompactFlash card is a native IDE/parallel ATA device. Just need the pin converter to make it fit, this adapter has no electronics and the card will be detected by the BIOS like a regular HDD, as it has an ATA controller inside. Most retro computing YouTubers use these nowadays since HDDs on that form factor aren't made in over 20 years and they've started to fail by now.

Only problem is the cost of cards with any meaningful capacity and being able to source a genuine card, especially the high quality SanDisk Extreme/Extreme Pro models, counterfeits are everywhere, and since newer cameras now use CFexpress (which is more similar to NVMe in nature) production winded down and prices got even higher.

I'm in the market for one myself, but it's been very difficult to source it, 64 GB Extreme Pros cost a fortune

Perhaps, if the laptop is in great physical condition with no cracks in the plastic or scratches, and if the LCD is still good. Panels from around that time tend to develop some issues even if unused, my HP nx9020's pretty much had that fate. Like, it yellowed out and the brightness seems all wrong? Almost as if the polarizer film rotted, you often see that problem with the Game Boy Color. No clue.

It is the same parallel ATA interface, yes.

Of relevance:

The CF device contains an ATA controller and appears to the host device as if it were a hard disk. CF devices operate at 3.3 volts or 5 volts, and can be swapped from system to system. CompactFlash supports C-H-S and 28-bit logical block addressing (CF 5.0 introduced support for LBA-48). CF cards with flash memory are able to cope with extremely rapid changes in temperature. Industrial versions of flash memory cards can operate at a range of −45 °C to +85 °C.

I recall an old IDE laptop that I replaced the hard disk with a CF card. The machine ran way better as the card is far faster than 120MB hard disks., 512MB to 2GB CF card is as much as DOS can format with FAT32.
