I’m thinking of a Windows XP build with a R9 280, FX-6300, Asrock 970 Pro3 mATX, 8 GB kit DDR3-1866/2133. The 970 board because there is XP chipset drivers, and the board is brand new old stock for $70. Youu can download from AMD’s support page Radeon 7950 XP drivers that work with a rebadge R9 280.

Wanted to put a warning for anyone considering RDNA2 for Windows 7 SP1 x64 use.

Radeon RX 6700 XT (trying to load CCC) :

Radeon RX 6950 XT :

^WDDM 1.1 support ("DDI = 9Ex"/DirectX 9.0c max. feature level support)

Crysis (OG) :

^Fails to launch with GeForce 5(FX) style error.

Conclusion :
DO NOT buy RDNA2 for Win7/Win10 dual boot systems (note : both tested cards are reference models).
Drivers are so broken you will pull your hairs out trying to make them work (not tested ALL RDNA2 cards, but after those two - I'm not going to).
+ They work fine under Windows 10 on the same settings/platform.

PS. RTX 30-series works fine under Win7.

EDIT: No go. 112 POSTs but as soon as WinME's bootscreen shows up (and 98SE does this too btw, I had a spare drive just in that case) it hard freezes. No amount of voltage bump seems to have allowed for more than 100.

I'm betting real money you could get 103mhz FSB out of it stable, maybe even 105mhz. If you dialed in the voltage just right. Don't give it more than 2.2V though. Most of the 300A's(not all) could get just above 100. Tinker with it some more, I'll bet it'll do it. Make sure you mount a faster 80mm fan on the heatsink though. Heat is limiting factor. Plenty of cooling is needed for stability with those Mendocino cores. Unless you're happy with 100FSB. Then hey, you're golden!

That's a very nice setup! I would go with the DDR3-1866. The gains you'd get from DDR3-2133 would marginal at best on that chipset/CPU combo. 1866 is dead cheap right now, 2133 isn't. Also, unless you already have the CPU, may I suggest an FX8300? The extra module(2cores/1FPU) will make a solid difference for some games(even on XP). Only a thought.

PS. RTX 30-series works fine under Win7.

Yeah, an RTX 3070 seems to be the last all-rounder for Windows 7.

Huh never liked the idea of much OVERbuilded systems for 98, XP, 7 ect... Like RTX 3070 for god damn win 7, like wtF... For me the max is like GTX 980/TaI or maybe GTX 1080/TaI, it just feels wrong to me, and it annoys me too... Tho i know why many do this, way overbuild systems = op gaming and everything... Still Dual s370 tualatins/ AXPs >>>> C2Q/ i7 in my book....

Was thinking about s939 system, i really like the platform, and is also rare platform, specially the high end parts are very hard to find, when not using ebay... But i do lack the desired mobo MSI NF3 Delta Platinum with the AGP slot, as i surely want s939 with AGP slot, since is DDR400 platform, i think AGP is the slot that needs to be present... But dont have that mobo, or any proper s939 with AGP... Ofc PCI ex with dual GPUs is also option, but dont like it as much for 939, on 775 will be better i think...


The old s939 build, used that for short back in 2017, GPU was Radeon HD4670, but not present in the pictures... Gotta say was pleased how the system was working, for its age... Also it was in the AthlonXP system case, that i were not using at that time... If someone is wondering wtF is going with that case, well CM Elite 330, modded to lets say Dodge Charger R/T, or at least thought so lol...









Now parts that can be used for proper s939 build... With the only nice x2 939 CPU i have Opteron 165, that also clocks up to 2.7GHz being fast AF with that speed, prob the Mushkin 2GB kit since is DDR500, mobo prob the MSI Diamond, since is very high end model, also i got it brand new too, GPU x1950XTX or HD4870.. Cooler is not optimal ofc, but i really like Zalman copper flower style coolers, they are defenitive for that era... The case is also very special, and nice to the touch too... When i did pwr on for the first time that MSI, i found that the god damn nGreedia nForce chipset is getting hot as hell, it did even change the color of the heatsink, that was UNexpected, but for sure will add fans and more metal to it, in order to be ok... Damn nGreedia chipsets are all always hot to the point of melting, only nForce II was any good, after that they are all hot stoves and furnaces...





Guess this is mah idea for nice XP system, not what others do RTX 5090/ 7900XTX paired with Ryzen 9800x3D/ 14900KFc and 128GB of ram....

Vista64 "build" (yet to decide case). Had to replace the GB mainboard with a Winfast/Foxconn later down the road though.

- Athlon 64x2 4600+ 939
- Geforce 7600GT, replaced with 8800GTX 768MB
- 4GB DDR400 (4x1GB)
- WD 160GB HDD + 2x 74GB Raptor RAID

XP era, for me it ends at late Socket 478/early 775 pre-DDR2. Anything past that (754/939/AM2/775 DDR2) is Vista and up territory.

Vista is an absolute no-go for me with a single-core processor.

Not me. I used XP well into the Socket 1366 timeframe.

Heck it was problematic even for a few quad core CPU's. EDIT: Until SP1, then it was pretty solid.

That's weird considering RX 6000 series is officially supported in Win7. Did you use the same installation for testing the RTX 30 series? Fully updated OS to at least January 2020? Perhaps a key component is missing, like DirectX or Platform Update?

AMD list two Win7 drivers for the RX 6000 series for some reason, the latest 22.6.1, and another which appears to be 21.9.12. Have you tried the other one?

The drivers, yes. It does depend on hardware. Not all Windows 7 supporting systems have full compatibility with the UEFI system that the RX6000 series looks for. Fairly certain this is where the problems are.
