What are you playing?

With real hardware or emulation? It's not been THAT long since I borrowed it from my friend for NES and played the 3 first dungeons. :toast:
Emulator. I wish I still had my NES. Unfortunately my childhood curiosity of the innards of electronics left it inoperable. lol

Still have mine, got that in.... 1993? from some friend of my mom. Modified it to run NTSC games in... 2005? Hell, the grey box has been always with me. :)

edit: I have a modified USB NES controller, so emulators are also fine. Feels about as good as a real NES controller, on, well, NES. Got new RCA cables from my console, my old ones were fucked up yet working.

I'm using a Logitech something or other 4 button controller that's probably from the early 2000's (though it does have analog sticks). I'd love a "real" NES controller.

Got a wired X360 controller today, that's my to-go controller for now for emulating newer platforms ^^

Ok, so have a couple different games going at the moment:

Darksiders 3: yep, it's fun. I love the style, I love the characters and the world (horsemen wheeling and dealing with angels and demons, looking down upon humanity with contempt), the gameplay with the "classic" setting is a good balance between soulsy and button mashing combat, simple and uncomplicated but impactful upgrade tree, oh yeah, and did I already mention this game just oozes with style? Love the Darksiders series...

Halo 4: So the kids are invested in riding along for a Halo MCC playthrough and we're now on Halo 4. Pretty game, gameplay feels like Halo, but not much else does. Sounds design is kinda all over the place, Chief talks quite a bit, the story is clearly one of those "didn't you read all the books and comics that make the plot make any kind of sense?", the Promethean enemy design is very, very meh and sometimes quite frustrating, and a.lot of the "sandboxiness" has been removed for pure shooting galleries.

Mad Max: Honestly expected another reskinned Arkham/Shadows style game, and the h2h combat is similar, but MM is clearly trying to do it's own thing with the vehicular combat etc. Once again a game that drops with style and fully immerses itself in a zany alternate reality of the MM world. Not completely sold on the game yet, the controls are sort of tanky, the combat system is not very forgiving and is certainly less Arkham/Shadows flow combat and much more timing dependent, and while the resource scarcity in the game makes sense, it feels like one of those things that is going to get really annoying eventually.

Darksiders is also one of a fav serie of mine even tho I generally don't like the bog standard souls like games nor the souls serie itself.
Darksiders is a good balance between the two with a solid story telling and a lore imo. '2 is still my fav but 3 is also great once you survive the first 2-3 hous of the game'

Mad Max is cool and runs on a potato just fine, finished it on my GTX 950 system with no issues and it was a blast. 'tho some of the missions were quite challenging unless you were over prepared for them'

There is some value to be had in the cutscenes. Story telling for main one. I personally like watching/reading through a storyline at least once so that the game makes sense in context. After once or twice, yeah, it's should be skipable.
Personally I would never in my life skip a story cutscene and I sometimes play such games cause I rather play a story driven game than watch yet another whatever movie.
Like I've played and finished the Mass Effect trilogy 3 times already and I've watched everything every single time.
Also played all of the Dark Pictures Anthology games and those are like interactive horror movies and I've liked them a lot.

Tho I might be a weirdo since I also like to read the story in online games/MMOs at leas once so that I know what the heck I'm even playing and I also play heavy story driven gachas where most of my gameplay is basically reading the stories in the game.

Have to add to my previous post, the d-pad is horrible in X360 controller, funny how it's otherwise almost a perfect gamepad.

The dpad was the greatest upgrade in the XB1 and XBSeries controller

I have the white pad which is unofficially called "One S" controller. Had that since 2018 and still kickin' :toast:

I have had issues with the D-pad on every controller I've owned besides the NES style (with the hole outlining the pad). As primitive as designs may have been then, they nailed it. Using this Logitech pad (round pad with a "+" in the middle) is frustrating as hell. Playing games I had mastered on NES seem infinitely harder on PC with this controller. Playing The Legend of Zelda right now gives me the impression that there's some kind of lag in the emulator, but there is not. It's just a weird feel on top of a controller that wasn't in mind for that particular game. This is an advantage of consoles: the game can be designed around a specific controller for optimum feel.

The same can be said for a native PC game: keyboard and mouse might be even more ideal (especially for first-person shooters where aim-assist becomes unnecessary).

Too many options in the PC world. Though this is a really good thing, it detracts from the aforementioned optimization.

I've been doing this since the XP days. Something microsoft got amazingly right.

That depends on which version you get. There have been many revisions to the 360 controller over the years.

No worries, I have max'd out Caladbolg. Tho I just couldn't get that fucking chicken nugget race for the Sigil, usually I get it at third try at last, but no... then my friend tried and he got it on the second try :D

it has RNG but that RNG god wasn't my friend that day :banghead:
The mini-game for Tidus' best weapon was something I did quite fast and easy my first time on the PlayStation 2, so I never knew how difficult it apparently was until reading everyone complaining about it online years later. Then I was like "huh"? When I replayed the game on the HD Remaster version on PC, I saw why because it wasn't a breeze this time, but I still didn't have too much difficulty with it.

The one that I always avoided was Lulu's. I can probably count the number of times I've cheated a game on one or maybe two hands. This was one of them. I was not going to dodge two hundred lightning strikes. I used some application that automated it for you (I can't remember what it was, but I remember that it worked by having you choose a color, and when the center of your screen was that color [from the lightning flash], the application would input the dodge command the correct amount of time later, so I idled in a certain spot and let it do it for 200+ strikes). Normally, when it comes to games, my mindset is "if I'm not willing to do it legitimately, I also don't care enough to have whatever it is that you get from doing it" so I almost never cheat things. But sometimes, you look at something and realize that what it's gated behind is absolute nonsense!

Not sure how +1000 polling rate and Hall effect sticks/triggers might work for emu. Coming directly from X360 wired it was a revelation in normal games + usable d-pad + programmable top mounted mini triggers that were instantly set to mirror d-pad ←→ which is impossible to use in fast paced situations unlike PS layout (8bitdo Ultimate 2C wired).

Let Pirate Yakuza rest for a bit after encountering, admittedly avoidable sidequest, the worst live action video sequences since a film crew was assembled for the Yakuza webseries. Possibly these same perpetrators doubled down on their careers. Altogether two solid hours were ruined for the sake of 100% completion. This in a game that is already as mid as you care to make it. About time those who defined gaming divert it onto a better path.

Taking this chance to simply state an appreciation of what both Japanese dev teams of Pirate Yakuza and Sleeping Dogs published. One pushing up against the amount of wondrous detail available in brightness and the other nearly unseen details buried in murky darkness. Both also succeed with a rare trip equally far on other side of the spectrum.

Just having fun here with Stalin.. and a tiny bit of console help

296 Divisions... lets go. All I did was draw some front lines for my armies... and along the way, planned a few spearhead/offensive operations to surround territory (Warsaw took weeks until I positioned an army behind it) and break supply lines wherever I got stuck. Its brilliant how the AI just manages the rest. War sim 10/10

Also air support is the way to keep your front lines supplied. The balkan mountains were hell. Then I added transport planes :p

Usually it's the same which platform I'm playing when going for the sigil. I just almost lost my mind but luckily my friend played it better

No lies but it's not that hard that I get it at second try, no matter the platform. Now going for the Sin boss which can one-shot me with its giga-graviton. Tidus/Rikku/Auron for now, going to have Tidus/Rikku/Yuna later after loooooong grinding.

I have platinum'd this so nothing to achieve, but I still have one rule. No Zanmato.

I meant the corded models. There have been a few that have crappy dpads.
Ah! It's a black one, suits well with my 360S as the console and the wireless pad are also black.

Bought Lossless Scaling on Steam because I wanted to test the frame gen. On my laptop I tried to offload the frame gen to Intel iGPU but it didn't work as well as I hoped. RTX 3050 is still too weak for any ray tracing so I tried it on my desktop.

From my limited testing, there is noticeable input lag with it enabled, but as long as the actual framerate is over 30fps it's minimal and didn't hinder with gameplay much at least on CP2077, it wasn't as bad as running native at the same framerate, visually there is some artifacts when moving up the stairs quickly and there is some around the edges of the monitor at some area, but it wasn't jarring. I still need to enable DLSS transformer quality setting to get above 30fps, if not it hovers at 20-25fps and that gave too much input lag. Worth it to buy? Well if you struggle to get some framerate it is, and since it's on sale now it worth to buy IMO. It beats the more aggresive DLSS settings that's for sure. I kinda wanted to use it with Vega 8 iGPU maybe another time.

Thanks for this, I think.

Looks interesting for less heavy handed tasks than dragging frame rates above slide show or un-rendered status. Will certainly look into it for potential uses today and going forwards.

I tried the Half-Life 2 RTX demo but it crashed at the hanging corpse. So better to give Henry some spectacles by throwing a rock at a birds nest in KCD2 but that one crashed too.  Then to ease my anger I tried GTA5E and low and behold ..no crashes but somehow it keeps telling me I failed the mission because Simion fails the deal. :banghead:
I'm gonna yell at some clouds now.

What resolution? If you're inclined and have no problems doing so, 720p should grant you enough headroom to do RT if you also adjust your other settings.

(And yes, I'm aware, it's heresy to suggest 720p here on TPU. I don't care about those opinions, 720p properly adjusted still looks good and is fully playable AND enjoyable.)

Now that I kicked The Crew Motorfest into touch, I'm thoroughly enjoying Forza Horizon 4&5, even though I had to start 4 from scratch because, although I have it on Microsoft, save games are not transferable - yes, I tried all the tricks in the book - but I much prefer Steam to that monstrosity, XBox/PC/GamePass.
The UI of Forza Horizon, the performance and not to mention the superb graphics. I also still play FH 3, so must remember which side of the road to drive on when switching from 5.
My new home in FH4 - if only!
