It's not only that but if software companies would not piss off the masses with their idiotic copy protection schemes more people would buy legit. Look what happens when you buy a copy of Windows Vista. It's so sensitive that even legit owners have been shut down and have had to call MS and beg to have them make their software legit. I know of at least 2 individuals on software forums who MS was unable to help out and they had to go back to Windows XP.

I purchased a legit copy of Windows Vista and just decided to apply the famous Paradox patch and be done with it. And with Windows Vista SP1 there's a crack already available on the net.

Pirates will never be stopped as long as there's the internet. Companies need to lower their prices on their goods and really loosen the grip of copy protection because all it does is piss off the legit owners. The pirates don't and won't care because they will always get their stuff fro free. In order to combat piracy in China MS decided to sell Vista for 1 dollar in China or a very small price. So that in of itself should tell you that not all but a good percentage would buy legit if prices weren't so high.

Look at Apple they ask a reasonable amount for their OS releases, something like $129. Microsoft on the other hand ask anywhere from $99 to $399.

according to a report M$ made a while back. only 200 copies of vista were sold in china. however your claim of M$ selling vista for 1 dollar in china is non existent as well as BS.

Dvd's and cd's cost twice as much in the uk as most other places, but still,i think if you like it then you shud probs buy it.I do with games,i dont really buy many films tho' coz i dont watch that many.If i do dl them,i watch them and delete afterwards.

I feel your pain. Im from the UK myself & i cant describe how much it infuriates me to pay almost up to 30-40% more then non euro countries & its all because we have a V.A.T system which is/was/has been implemented by Her Majesty the Queen - with all due respect to her this system sucks & what makes it even worse is the amount of goverment tax thats taxed off us & thats BEFORE we have even have the oppotunity to think about buying something & to end it all manufacturers dont help - nearly every big brand name is guilty of price fixing in the UK & they seem to think its alright & we will carry on oblvious to the daylight robbery thats happening to us while we sleep. every little thing here we have to pay a premium for which is sickening & our salaries dont match the prices of the market thats why I resort to piracy. on the odd occasio i will buy a game & i will buy a CD if i cant find it to download anywhere but I will stick to getting things for 'free' until things change until then i save my money for a ticket to see the artists of the few back catalogues I have downloaded, which in my view is very fair, I always make a huge effort to see the bands i love.

how can manufacturers/big brands short change Euro consumers like that when EVERYONE else gets it cheaper?

if you like it buy it theres no need to use these sites.

my 0.02

that would be so true if muscians actualy made a GOOD album instead of just the 1 or 2 decent tracks quality of music these days sucks, im not saying everybody releases shit albums but those that are arnt worth sticking your hand in your wallet for.

I like RIAA's methods: Lying is bad, stealing is bad! But it's ok when we do it! Typical US world police behaviour...
Anakata is a hero, because he stands up for what he believes in, good or bad! RIAA is turning into a New Inquisition or a New Reich! They want total control, and anybody standing against them will be "trialled" even if there are no laws to support it.
I can hear RIAA:
"Yeah, some innocents might fall, but that's ok, 'cuz we're the US and we believe in f**** up 200 innocents just to get 1 or 2 bad guys. I't called sacrifice! It's the "american way"!"
^Typical BULL*!

Why so much hate for the U.S.? I'm tired of people in other countries being racist to Americans.

1. The RIAA, is not a goddamn example for all U.S. people.

2. You know nothing about our country or our people, just bullshit you hear.

3. Why don't you hate on Columbia or South Africa? Places that are truly out of hand.

Grow up, you set a bad example for yourself by being so naive, uneducated, and racist.

There's so many different pieces coming into play with all of this. The comments he makes are definitely legitimate, and I think he brought them out far better than has ever been. The industries are greedy.

A couple other points to consider.
-Yes, musicians are not as devoted to MUSIC anymore as they are money, which they have far too much of anyway; this snowballs into crappy albums, which no-one wants to buy, so they download instead. However, this being said, if I really like a band and want to support it so it can continue to make good music, I buy the CD, and concert tickets.
-Movies/Television is exactly the same, and I think the writers' strike in the US is a PERFECT example of this; Motion Picture Companies destroyed themselves from the inside out simply by means of their greed, even with their own employees, and the most important ones at that; it's supposed to be over soon, but just wait for what that will mean for the consumer. These people make WAY too much money; Theater prices have been skyrocketing, and DVD prices are too high.

-Software: OK, there's a big problem with this one. I VERY RARELY DL illegit software, and that's only when I only need it once and then delete it. There is a lot of hours and time and effort, and pure genius, that goes into software coding, and software creation (e.g.- games). Small companies are already drastically cutting back on programmers, and coders' average salaries are constantly dropping. By illegally downloading/using their software, they are getting almost nothing out of it. This is going to continue to downward spiral of small software companies.
NOW, contrast this with big companies like Microsoft; they DO need to drop their prices, cuz they ARE making too much money, and are not utilizing what they make properly (ex. BLEH Vista - sloppy coding & lots of bugs means no good programmers; bad design means no good creative department; horrible compatibility means bad managers).

Then couple all this with political/legal greyness; you've got yourself the quandary that we're seeing now.

You saying musicians aren't as devoted as they once were is just your opinion, and in my opinion it's because you listen to crappy music!:laugh:

If crap like dvd's and other media wasn't so expensive people wouldn't steal it

heh ppl in the USA complain about the price of things but compared to Australia its nothing.

Australians pay almost double what the USA does for Games, DVDS and so forth.
my preorder of Frontlines: Fuel of War was $109 alone (And the AUS release is 2 weeks behind the USA release)
Crysis is still $89.95 here (same with BioShock, CoD4, etc etc etc)

New release DVD's range between $35.95-$40.00 (which isn't that bad i guess)

I mean I don't mind paying a bit extra for games and so on but the thing is our exchange rate isn't that far behind that of the USA and it honestly just seems like they release games in the USA cheaper because its a bigger country then release the same product in to smaller county's and expect the other country's to pay the difference they lose from selling games so cheaply to a larger consumer market.

Sorry if this seems a little hostile or anti-America but its just something I'm sick of.

Have you considered buying games off US ebay and having them shipped? Media Mail from US is quite cheap. I would be frustrated if I were you too brotha.

Well thats what I do sometimes unless its a game I wanna support sales of in Australia.

I paid the $109 AUD for the FFoW collectors pre-order but the normal version of the game is only $9 less here : /

Australian FFoW CE Release:

But Bioshock and other games I own like SoF: Payback I ordered form places like USA,UK,India, China, (Actually SoF: Payback was banned in Australia so thats the only reason I bought it lol)

But yeah I got Bioshock was $33 AUD (incl) postage and its like $80 AUD or $89 AUD at my local game selling outlet : /

theres another reason i dl games & crap....... the US gets it befor we do, sometimes by a fairly big margin! so i dl it & have it before any of my mates do.... what better way to make ppl jelouse then to have an unreleased game! i dont care about original discs, coz i keep all my image files on my computer... saves the disc's from getting damaged like they inevitably would.

also when u put it in perspective.... i payed just over 2G for my comp... if i had of bought all the software... i could have built my comp 2 or 3 more times!

wallet makes decisions

i do remember having to take out a loan for my laptop in 2000. the loan was for $5000 and this computer was thee best available. it was built and shipped and i made two loan payments before seeing the computer itself. when i got it i needed to edit video on it so i had to purchase a capture card, the cable and software to process the video $200 for laptop version minimum! the software i purchased would crash all the time, sometimes in the middle of rendering a video and leave me only to start over again and again. i'm talking 6hr processing time for each video and then my friend brought over his software that was included with his computer for video editing. it installed converted and burned a movie in under 2hrs total! i paid nothing for it and it saved me a big head ache as i had 20 video tapes i had to convert to vcd (at that time it was high quality with no dvd burners) this computer took 2 years monthly payments of $250 to pay off. The cdburner cost over $500 and took over 30 mins to burn 1 cd! and sometimes would fail the burn!

this year, i have played alot of next-gen games and viewed alot of movies. i have paid nothing for the files themselves, however i made significant upgrades to my hardware like adding multiple hard drives, the best graphics card available, strong power supply and better tv with dvi to view it all on. i was planning, with cash in hand to puchase a ps3 and connect it to play movies and games as my computer at the time could not run anything that was recently released. even HD movies would stutter on my system and that was unacceptable. i made a decision, try out a new piece of equipment (ati HD3850) and run some games and HD video files that i've sampled from the internet. to my surprise it ran them flawlessly. so now the ps3 was not a necessity as my new gfx card $240 CAD could perform all that a ps3 could do but with one extreme difference; the software and video files can be digitally created by means of code transfer through the internet. the binary bits on my hard drive could be alligned with the same patterns that exist on the discs someone across the world bought and shared. i paid for the internet, paid for the computer and many many upgrades ($500-1000 per year i'd say) and the most significant part is the time necessary to make these codes work. I've paid for the electricity running it all and weather their software was running on my screen or a blank image i would still be sitting in front of this thing day in day out, hard drives and fans spinning.

every single software i've purchased has been flawed or missing parts and the performance was always barely acceptable. the expensive professional software that we can sample from the internet is always better and when i walk thru staples and see the price list of adobe or microsoft packages i think to myself, is it a waste of money if i put it down on this software bundle, and think back to the time where the software i had purchased caused nothing but anger and waste of time and resources, then i make my decision... i always test the available softs from the net first, if it runs, runs well then i purchase it. if it sucks or my hardware cannot perform then it has been revealed with zero penalty as the productivity for proposed business is non-existant.

each ps3 game is in excess of $60 whether it is a good game or not. i can rent, yes and have nothing but the experience of the game to enjoy after the rental period. i actually almost bought into this entertainment method, but upgraded my computer instead. DVD's cost what $35 to buy 1 disc of evil dead! this movie was made in the 70's and i've seen it 100 times on vhs. i bought it and watched it over and over and enjoyed the deleted scenes etc., but sold it for 2 dollars at a yard sale! i downloaded it the next day. people paid to see it in the theater and then have to buy the disc, the player, the tv and sound system to enjoy it again years later. the same media has been paid for the stars are old and we're still seeing sales of the medium today.

as for music i just deleted my folders of mp3's some downloaded and some ripped from purchased cd's.( i used to buy 2-4 cd's every month @ 20-25 dollars a piece!) i did this to make room for video editing and to re-install xp and vista both downloaded from the net. the reason i deleted my folders after accumulating 50000 mp3's over the years is because i know that if there is a song i want i can find it in a day or less using the internet. the real price of software should be monitored and adjusted according to true value, not proposed cost of development. go ahead and invest millions in something that only rich people can upgrade every year and leave out all the rest of us that have rent bills car payments grocery bills for items of substance rather than aligned digital bit streams on my 100 dollar hard drive. i have adobe photo shop 3dstudio video editing OS dvd programs and dvds hddvds pc games and mp3s that the only cost to aquire them is the investment in a bit of knowledge from the internet and the cost of internet and computer components that have a renewed value every single time i click DOWNLOAD.

if software and media companies are truly concerned with losing money then invest in a device that does NOT require installation or runs off a piece of hardware like a cartridge that you must purchase. how about microsoft include a stick of ROM to provide an OS rather than a cd or dvd that lives on a hard drive that can be copied anytime by anyone! its rediculous how we make such a problem for ourselves when we need to look at the source of the problem, cd's, dvd's and hard drives. eliminate them at the means of media transcoding and provide physical hardware to be used like a tvo or ps3 does. you NEED to have the hardware to run the media files, dvd's do it but ipods and mp3 players all "clone" the digital binary code onto the internal storage medium because we allow the transfer.

no one is in trouble, we should all embrace this as a learning growth scenario. if you dont like it, change it. i have many ideas of how to stop the file sharing and i'm sure they've all been put into place somewhere by someone else with the same thought process. however, someone else found another way to exploit the vulnerability of the media medium (cd's, dvd's, internet, hard drives, all need to be throttled or "keyed" before they can allow transfer) this key is transferrable at some point and that's the problem. hardware that has no user interface is the key, expensive yes but WORKS!
plus the transfer rate of hardware ROM is much faster than optical transfer rates and less vulnerable too!

i for one am satisfied to see my investment of 1000's of dollars over the years on my hardware is finally being made of some use! entertainment or work, it is getting to become a greater experience to own a pc these days! but when i was totally legit and buying expensive software and media there was alot less "value" in the investment compared to todays ratio.

currently i have 20 next gen games and about 100 dvdrips on my computer from the past couple months of random downloading. i have found only a few HDDVD files available and they are problematic and annoying to bother with right now. a few of the games have messed up my computer so someone is altering their original code to mess with downloaders' OS.

but, the one who is sharing or encouraging sharing is the problem, so in this case, the leader should be made example of, but it will stop nothing, just slow it down and reshape it like a deflected blow, learn and attack at another angle... or something like that.

kinda garbled but it kinda make some sense. ppl should do 2 things.
1 develop better products

no point to argue here...
face that there are some people who will never want to pay, just like there are people who do the opposite
no need to tell them what to think, they already have decided...
now, let the law to decide what to do with them

I might or might not have 'obtained' some software, and liked it enough to purchase it *cough*HG:L*cough* after trying it. I think there are more than a few people that do things that way...maybe....

Ubisoft aint givin us Aussies ne real incentive to do the right thing thanks to there games not being available to us over Steam. So we either pay the rip off 100 buck price in the stores import from the US or illegally dl wich im sure many will do.

@mab1376
totally agreed.......... welcome to today! (i would say the future... but were already living it!)
u cant stop it, u wont b able 2 stop it... give up already & look at alternative methods like lowering some prices so people stop comparing

legit software $300 - works 100% & is genuine
pirate software $0! - works 90-100% & is hacked/cracked.

hmm.... $300 for a tiny bit more convenience sounds like a rip off.... expecially when 1/2 the time i have 2 buy it at a shop or wait for it to be posted.....
hmm.... free...... can download it now...... & is bloody fast to download!!!!!! no shops... no postage...... how convenient!
especially when if it doesn't work, u can get a different $300 software for free!

if things were at a reasonable price i would deffinately buy legit a lot more!
instead of scouring around torrent sites & making the developers nothing!

Lets continue that train of thought.

Sex, costs you some drinks a condom and you'd have to be a smooth talker. - 100% pleasure and mutual.
Rape, just knock her out in an alley - at least 90% of the pleasure and not mutual.

Or how about

Buying a car - 100% speed, women will dig you
Stealing a car - 100% speed, women will detest the fact that you're a carthief (then again the previous example comes to mind there)

I would go on about murder, however I think that crime isn't justified because the gain the the same. If you think theft of music or software isn't crime you should recheck your morals.
"but it's so expensive" - Well, I've seen some pretty nice houses, they're far too expensive though. Should I commit a crime now or just not buy one?
