Touche ... I did read the whole post and for some reason Malware's comments stuck in my craw, not the quote. :banghead:

In any event, I wonder what MS will strip out this time to try to make their self imposed deadline?

well, if their handling of audio in Vista is any indicator - sell your speakers for the next WIN OS, as audio is going completely out the door. All audio will have to uploaded to a Zune player, and then played back - hope you don't mind a bit of a time delay

Oh, and considering MS, if you have a CRT or LCD monitor - kiss that too, WIN07 will be completely touch screen oriented

You'll probably need a webcam that supports retinal scans for validation, and instead of 30 days, they'll only give you 30 hours - they figure if they cut it down to 30 hours, that's less time the haxurz have in breaking activation codes before they'll have to re-install the OS. They're hoping to beat them by frustrating them with tighter time restraints.

I get that strange feeling in my pants, too, that you can kiss USB and 1394 support goodbye. We're going back to PS2, cause it was more stable . . . but the catch is, you'll have to buy a PS2 copmpatible IR unit, as all your peripherals will have to be wireless.

Readyboost will be a necessity, so go ahead and plan on purchasing a 120GB flash drive, as 16GB of onboard memory won't be enough for the OS to lug itself to the desktop - but you'll need to find one that supports PS2, cause USB and 1394 won't be around, remember?

WIN will have to be compatible with your video card, instead of your video card being compatible with WIN. Which means, when your getting buggy video performance in-game, you'll have to wait until the next support driver from WIN to be released. Don't expect compatiblity with Catalyst or Forceware . . . but, rumor has it, if you own a Matrox VGA, you've go nothing to worry about.

I believe this time, the EULA for WIN07 will also contain an appended "right to use" agreement that you'll have to sign before allowing usage. The agreement will require one to sign away your soul to make use of the product, and that any changing from WIN to a competing OS is strictly prohibited, and your soul will be collected upon promptly. MS has left it out of the last 2 OSes, cause they didn't think they had anything to worry about from OS-X and Linux . . . but they've changed their minds.

Seriously, though, I'm really hoping they'll at least fix the audio issues with the new OS.

The new features will be smaller kernel and smaller footprint than Vista. :p Actually, I do believe THIS may be the version they will implement a completely new user interface, because it's been said by many that Vista would be the last Windows OS (and server 2k8) with the Windows 95 styled interface. Even a circular interface has been mentioned... (I send a lot of time reading about Windows, lmao.)

That would be interesting. Do you mean by new interface something like that cubed user interface that Linux has which enables you to have 6 pages for the desktop screen?

Not sure, but the way I understand it, they are looking into circular windows and a 'pie' like interface... It was last year that I read about it and I discussed it with someone on my MSN. They also said that MS is also working on a new OS to completely replace Windows (I bet it's Sigularity)

I say keep the small Footprint, there is a writer over at CPU mag that still uses Word 2.0 because its not bloated like later versions are, IMO best Word apps that ive used were 97 and 2000, after that the apps are junk.
oh thank god. I think they realize that there is no "one size fits all" (or one size fits a 'segment') approach to an OS, or its features... i heard that windows 7 will be modular, which is amazing for people who want to customize their PC and good for OEM's since they will be more able to configure the software on their machines.

That's why I think Win7 will actually come out pretty quick -- hopefully it will be the "WinXP" to Vista's "WinME"... :shadedshu

Ha!! Nicely said. The first thing I thought of when I read this is that Vista could end up being similar to the Windows ME fiasco.

It doesn't matter how it looks. We can all adjust to a new interface.
It's how it works and new features that it implements that will determine if it's worthy.

What can I say, man? After having used every operating system M$ has put out since DOS 3.1 - I've got a fairly good idea as to what their idea of an "innovation" is . . . typically, it makes absolutely no sense, reverts back to a more stable technology, which is then re-skinned or covered over in some manner, reduces user-friendly features, and impliments more features that the average user doesn't really need . . . then they tack on a bunch of "behind the scenes" services to make the OS appear to run faster, but after about 1 week really just slow it down or instead gather all the other services and stage a picket line between the Windows\ directory and System32\ directory, leaving the OS asking the user "WTF is my shit, batman?! I can't find 'im_screwed.dll'!!!"

Remember, the MS motto is - if we can't figure it out now, screw it, meet the deadline; it can always be service packed later!

There will always be a launch point (start menu) of some kind. There has to be a way for users to access the applicaitons on their machine that are not represented as icons on the desktop.

I just do not want them to add more useless animation to the desktop, as it improves nothing and is just eye candy. While many users see this as cool, it is just an annoying for people who want to get around the OS quickly.

I have this sort of sick feeling that one of these days MS is going to throw an entire 3D desktop at us that makes using the OS similar to playing an FPS. It will be very cool for the first 10 minutes or so, and they we will all slit our wrists.

That's an idea right there . . . MS should partner with ID Software for the next OS. That way, if you want to get to your Start menu, you're gonna have to kill a pack of zombies . . . you found the Run command, cool, but you're stuck dealing with a Cacodemon before the OS agrees to load your program . . . Oh, you want to get into Explorer? Well you've got to run the gauntlet of Shamblers, grab the BFG, turn around and waste 'em all with 1 shot beofre you can view the contents of your C:\ directory . . . . Now, you'll have to manage to find the beserker powerup that has been hidden within the depths of the System32\ before you can make any changes to your directory tree, or make new folders :ohwell:

y'know . . . that'd be pretty sweet :toast:
