Aeneon is entering the DDR3 market with their X-Tune brand. This series is aimed at the gamers and their first offering is set at 1333 MHz with CL8. It comes with very nice looking black heatspreaders and a unique, blue PCB

A fine review Sir, well done. A funny thing though about DDR3- when you look at the bandwidth results you see scores that are only 10-20% faster than the bandwidth that my old athlon 3000+ used to score using 500MHz Kingmax DDR modules (approx 7000Mb/s).

You think things would have progressed faster in the memory field but it just looks like they are just pumping up speeds in terms of Mhz without actually releasing a faster product.

I think i'll hang onto my DDR2 system for a while longer (had to upgrade to that- pity Skt 939 died so young)- looks like I'll give DDR3 a miss altogether!

Well first of thanx ^^.

The important aspect of this memory is the fact that it uses only default voltage. I agree that DDR3 at these speeds generally does not have the hoped for benefit, but this has nothing to do with Aeneon. This is simply because DDR2 has progressed so far that we can even get 1200 MHz CL5 DDR2 memory these days.

DDR3 will eventually beat DDR2 in every aspect, but it will take time. Just as was the case with DDR2 when it came out, compared to DDR1.

cheers

True true. I think i remember thinking the same thing when DDR2 came out but look at me now... I've got 5 and a half gigs of it around the place!

No, DDR2 doesn't suck. It can easily beat DDR1 now.

DDR3 does suck at the moment, but it will mature to the point where it spanks both DDR1 and 2.

Thx to the Higher Clock Speeds yes, but if DDR1 were reaching 800 MHz or higher then yes DDR1 would still be faster.

No offense, but that's kind of a pointless argument. DDR1 doesn't, and will not ever, go that high. Besides, think about it. Most high performance DDR-400 kits are CAS2, high performance DDR2-800 kits are CAS4. Both equal. If you doubled the speed of DDR1 to 800Mhz, it wouldn't run any faster than CAS4 anyway, but it would consume a crapload more power to get there. DDR3-1333 CAS6 would be even tighter than either DDR-400 or DDR2-800.

So no, DDR1 is not better than DDR2.

Great review.
45ns @225Mhz and I can hold these timings to 230 before I need to relax anything. 2.85v

And I've seen plenty of DDR2 with 45ns response times. There was a mem latency bench competition in here at one time. Can't find it atm, tho.

my old CT-5 sticks could do it in the 30s something like 460mhz 2-3-2-5

More voltage and I could have better timings, unfortunately my board limits me to 2.85

But the point is, DDR2 & 3 still are not scaling as well.

cdawall, you were using one stick of 512 and 230 in DDR is 460Mhz if i remember correctly, and I hit mid 30's with my old pair of memory. 1 2 2 0, but with a 2GB kit still running 1T and these tight of timings we are comparing apples to apples in a sort of ways.

The hell they aren't. Well, DDR2 at least. 3 hasn't gotten there yet. If I crank the voltage, I can run over DDR2-1200 CAS4. You'd have to run DDR1 at 600Mhz CAS3 to keep up. Not too many kits do that. (Although there are some that will)

yes, if you crank the voltage, but again, I have had this RAM at the same settings to 230Mhz and a little beyond. if I had 3 to give it I 'm sure that I could hit 240-250 at the same settings. or 2.3.2.3 1T at 300 as some others have hit the same easily.

By crank the voltage, I mean around 2.36V. So not even a ridiculous amount. DDR2 has surpassed DDR1 in performance, plain and simple. DDR3 still has a while to go to catch up tho.

nice review but this is why im not worried about ddr3 yet, its just not worth the price when compared to ddr2.

CAS3 600 out of DDR1 is the same as CAS6 1200 for DDR2. CAS3 690 would be like CAS6 1380.

My DDR2 does CAS5 1400. You'd have to pull CAS3 840 out of DDR1 to match it.

Sorry DDR1 fans, but DDR2 has surpassed it. DDR3 is on the way to overtaking both.
