Hi guys,

Topic says it all, I want a good motherboard for my Intel q6600 cpu.

I found these motherboards, are they good ? what are the advantages and disadvantages one over another?

ASUS p5Q
ASUS P5QC
Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3R
MSI P45 Platinum

My budget ranges from $120 to $160. I will like to OC.
and as the DDR3 prices are high, I hope to go for DDR2 memory(800 or 1066), and my vga is a PNY 8800gt but I hope to go for a 9800gx2.
please suggest some best motherboard models.

Thanks. :toast:

The Gigabyte does well... I think I have a similar model... Works well with my Q6600

I've heard of people getting 3.9ghz on a p45 chipset, not sure about the MSI board, but that might be something to take into consideration when most people only get about 3.5-3.6ghz on other chipsets.

My experience with ASUS isn't being a pleasant one, I have been having trouble with the FSB going over 410 on my P5Q-Pro. Up to this point, I can't recommend an Asus P45 board. However, the P35 chipset is the best for overclocking without wanting Crossfire. i would recommend a DFI Bloodiron or a Gigabyte DS3 series motherboard.

i said it a few times because anyone who wants to run a quad and gets 680i or 780i is asking for trouble. heavyH20 is a perfect example of people who've made it work, but lots of people dont and have massive problems with Q6600 and quad core OCing.

I too think the maximus formula sounds like a good option.

I am running my 6750 on my p5q-e fine at 450fsb at 1.375vcore.The only problem i have had with this board was an incompatability with ballistix tracers.I am using ballistix non tracers now,the new 2.0v spec ones and they are fine it seems.

My q6600 tops out @ 3.75 (417x9) but I have to give it 1.55v and it gets very hot (throttles @ 100c) when running orthos, but its fine in games 80c max

Imo, 3.2-3.6 is very good with a quad, regardless of the chipset, but I would have taken the Maximus given the choice again.

Haz: you got a B3? either you're on a B3, or you're using coretemps numbers, because Q6600 (G0 at least) throttle at 85C

No, it's a G0, and yes, coretemp :) Its 100c Tjunction, maybe should have mentioned that.....

Does that mean then that Tcase is roughly Tjunction - 15c ?

Makes 80c Tjunction only 65-70c ..... sweet !

If you are looking for top overclocks with that CPU with ease then go with Intel chipsets like P35 or P45. Very affordable at this moment.

If you want more features inlcuding more reliable native RAID and SLI support, then nVidia chipsets would be your best option. Anything from 6xxi and 7xxi lineup. Although you can expect much tougher overclocking experience, especially with 6xxi based motherboards. Although, with my motherboard I fixed that problem by upgrading from Q6600 to Q6700. On 6xxi motherboards higher multi is helpful since FSB tops out at much lower levels.

I don't know, I like my 780i. 3.6 is no problem. I've benched at 3.8. 3.42 24/7. Alot of people say quads don't overclock well with nvidia chipsets. Not me. I haven't had to clear cmos once with this board.

just to say this: Coretemp has been proven useless on G0 and newer. he made an assumption as to the Tjunction, and its wrong.

You need to use realtemp for accurate temps.

maybe, but I get the same temps with speedfan, and Tjunction 100c in coretemp making me throttle back to 6xmulti does 'kinda' tie in with what you said about throttle being @ 85c, if you were refering to Tcase that is :)

found this http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=179044&page=1, aparently the only difference between realtemp and core temp is the calibration of Tjunction, realtemp being the most accurate as you stated :)

As for accurate temps, does it really matter if the chip throttles ? as long as you can keep it below the throttle temp in normal gaming / usage you're not gonna loose any performance?

oh, and, yes, I know this approach will reduce the l/e of said chip, and @ about £100 a pop its not rly an issue with me, but is DEFFO something that should be considered is you want a bit of longevity !!
