Might be a PSU issue, troubleshooting help please

My PC (now my wife's PC since I build a Quad machine for me) on my Specs (The AGP one) is acting wierd.

Last night when I went to turn on the PC it didn't turn on. No lights, no fans nada nothing like dead. The PC is hooked up to a UPS and my wife told me that the UPS software complained about changing the battery since it was 3 years old. So I thought the UPS gave up. But all other things connected to the UPS was working, monitor, Cable Modem, Router, 60w table lamp all running of UPS fine. Then I thought may be the PC gave up. So unhooked the power cord from the UPS and plugged in directly to the wall outlet. Powered on the system and the machine booted. All was fine. Then before I went to sleep I powered down the machine. This morning I tried to power on, same thing no go. Still plugged to wall outlet. So I switched off at the back of the PSU and waited for 5 min and turned on, still nothing. So I pulled out from the wall outlet, waiting for a min and then plugged back in and it booted up. So every time I shutdown the machine I have unplug from outlet and replug and boot.

I am thinking its the PSU. The machine is being working OCd for almost 2 yrs now. No BSOD etc. Quiet and stable.

Help please. If it is a PSU prob I need to order one from egg and RMA this Ultra thing.

I am at work now, so I can access my machine. So post your suggestions I will try tonight.

Yeah, sounds like the psu is dying a slow death. Get rid of that Ultra PSU.

I'd go with the OCZ one, more 12V rails and amperage than the Antec

Frys has the Antec Trio 650W for $70 no rebates and Thermaltake Purepower 600W for $60 AR.

I'd say the Pure Power. If you decide to go Newegg, I'd spend $20 more and go with this corsair:

Both are better than either power supply option from fry's

I still have this new Ultra 600w that I got as replacement from my earlier Ultra death.

It seems to be a improved version. Should I put it in and create RMA for the current broken one?

My wife now a days hardly find time to play games on it. If it powers up stable and quiet I am good with that.

That OCZ seems to be decent and with rebate and newegg coupon it comes to about $38 with a 4GB usb drive too. Thats why I was thinking just buy the OCZ one.

I'm just big on not compromising with PSU's. So for me, it's always worth spending a few more dollars for peace of mind. That being said, the OCZ is not a bad psu and a really good price.

In the meanwhile, go ahead and run that Ultra. I just wouldn't leave it in there.

you mean the new Ultra or the old one? I completely shutdown the machine and unhooked the power cord from the wall socket. My wife is using mine now. Quick fix is to go with the OCZ one, if egg ships it today and if they ship from local warehouse I will get it tomorrow and be done with it.

Or I just need to go to Frys or Micro Center tonight and pickup one.

Go with the OCZ power supply. It will take care of your problem. You don't want a power supply to kill your componets and then have to buy an entirely new system.

I have 3 options

1. Use Ultra X-pro 600W

2. Use Ultra X3 600W Modular

3. Use Antec Trio 430W - Move from Quad machine to AGP machine and use one of the above mentioned PSUs and sell one (again which one to sell?). On the Quad machine I will be upgrading to ATI 4850 soon.

To tell the truth, I don't like Ultra or Antec. I would say to put the X3 in your Quad Machine and the Antec in the AGP machine.

The Antec Trios and Earthwatts are made by Seasonic, and they behave like a single rail. I'd take either over the OCZ or Ultra any day.

Just remember that even tho they are Seasonic built, Antec still slightly overrates them. Jonny Guru tested the 650w to 647.5W just fine, but when he went to put 51A to the 12V rails while in the hot box, the fuse popped on both units.

Thanks Wile. Yeah that Trio is solid powering my Quad Phenom with 3 HDDs, 1 optical, X800GTO OCd to X850XT speed, 1 LED 140mm fan and 2 120mm fans. It still runs relatively cool. So I guess it can still power my 939 rig.

No, Ultra psus are not very good. That's why we're on him about it. Seasonic made psus are built infinitely better.
