Members of the XtremeSystems forums put up pictures of Gigabyte's flagship X58 motherboard for the upcoming Core i7 processors, the EX58-Extreme with all its bells and whistles in place. Pictures of the board have surfaced several times now, older pictures were those of the EX58-DQ6 and DS4 models. What can be seen from the pictures, is a humongous chipset cooler that attaches itself to the main northbridge heatsink. The cooling continues over the board's VRM area and a large block covers the ICH10R southbridge. As the label screams, the motherboard is based on the Ultra Durable 3 PCB construction for best stability, heat dissipation and EMI control. Clearly, if you're going to be in the market for an enthusiast-grade motherboard, you're going to have a tough time...choosing. I'll leave you with the pictures.

IT NEEDZ MOAR POWAH!!!

On a more serious note, how come they are generating MORE heat? I would have thought that the more advanced motherboards get, the less heat and power they would need...
Is it something to do with supporting Xfire and SLI in one chipset?

The board in the pictures an an alpha (almost the real thing). From what Gigabyte tells hicookie, changes to the final (release) version could be just a cosmetic colour change to the DIMM slots, at the most.

Overkill and the colour scheme sucks major ballage!

Not a board I'm likely to get as I'll be watercooling the chipset, CPU and the a-like myself.

They really should, pink and green ruins the look of that board for me.

Look closely, the NB cooler supports both WC and extreme air cooling using the detachable air cooler.

If they were trying for aesthetics (in which is evident due to those fancy design on the heatsink), they should stop the LEGO color motiff and go for some plain, dark, uniform colors.

I noticed that but it's still not a board I'd want even with those features.

So is this cooling gonna be necessary? Are the non fancy cooled boards gonna overheat?

And Is there no fan on that PCI cooler?

I think the Computer industry needs to work on cooler and more effeceint components, rather than elaborate coolers.

If it would run too hot without a fan then I'm sure Gigabyte would have implemented one in the design. To me it looks a good cooling system and if a fan on that heatsink would make a huge different it would be quite easy to attach one.

Why? Why every board should "bear" the same colours over and over again? At least you can recognize their boards instantly. And for some people (not few), the colours are just ok.

That's the thing, I don't want the generic colour scheme offered by most manufacturers. IMO: Black, Blue and White - boring, but better than what looks like a motherboard that has had multi-coloured cereal spewed on it. If people like that, that's cool - it just looks really bad in my eyes.

At least you can recognize their boards instantly. And for some people (not few), the colours are just ok.

I'm not arguing that. :p

If people think, Red & Black are generic colours for a motherboard, why is so bleedin' hard to find one. Or even a Black & Red one. The only boards I know of that had that colour scheme were the abit Fatality boards, they looked really good and I would like to see another firm use that theme, or at least invert it.

If a EX58-Extreme w/ pink slots ends up pwning a Rampage II Extreme (the big IF), you end up with the higher ground over "manly" components.

It's not a big fuss that's the thing. It's all down to taste we all know that, just because people that a voicing their opinion about the horrible choice in colours doesn't mean it's anything big. See, my girlfriend doesn't understand why I care so much about a matching colour scheme, but I do, obviously not to the point where performance is compromised, but I do.

If this board turns out to be the best motherboard for me, then I'd get it, obviously I wouldn't be pleased about the colour scheme but the fact it PWNs the competition would dampen that black mark.

Some people don't care about the colours, some people don't like the colours. It really isn't a big deal, it's just taste. Makes me chuckle when people blow things so meaningless out of proportion.

Debatable.

I'm not singling out Pink, I hate all really vibrant colours on motherboards. However, I like the DFI boards as it works with their overall colour scheme, even if the green is a bit bright, it looks better than having loads of different crayons, sorry colours on the board.

That's just how people work. Like how some enthusiasts don't care about cable management, how some prefer air over water-cooling and so on.

Odd -- it's traditionally women who care about colour schemes, while men aren't supposed to give a shit.

Guess it all depends on the item.
