I've always wondered what the point of a tri-core is. It'sa bit like Sainsbury's "Taste The Difference" cheese.

AMD needed a selling point.

1 reason was because dual cores were way behind in performance, AMD ended up taking a few quad's that didn't pass tests disabled a core. and realized performance was not great but better than some high end dual cores.

http://www.tweaktown.com/articles/1669/8/core_i7_920_core_disabling_performance_analysis/index.html

Reading that article it shows that in some modern games the performance boost from 2 to 3 cores is pretty decent, with 3 to 4 cores providing little improvment, so i guess for people who want to go multicore on an AM2 or AM2+ platform but don't want to spill the extra £/$ for a quad can get a tri which will play games the same.

$107 is pretty cheap for a new proc. I wouldnt discount them being sub $100 when they hit US shelves.
