NVIDIA GeForce GTS 240 to be Overclocked GeForce 9800GT

Hardware informer Expreview has updated the information on NVIDIA's future price/performance graphics card, the GeForce GTS 240. Previously reported just as a renamed NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT, the GTS 240 is now being accounted for more than that. GeForce 9800 GT Green Edition is going to succeed GeForce 9800 GT. On the other hand GeForce GTS 240, while still very similar to GeForce 9800 GT, will come with higher clock speeds - 675/1688/2200 MHz compared to 600/1500/1800 MHz core/shader/memory found on 9800GT. NVIDIA is expected to officially announce GeForce GTS 240 at the upcoming CeBIT computer show in Hannover, Germany.
In related news, Expreview confirms that GeForce GTS 250, another card that will coexist with GTS 240, will be exactly the same as GeForce 9800 GTX+ except for the name of course.

I guess Nvidia much perfers re-re-selling old 8800GT's instead of making crippled GTX280s, e.g. card with 512MB RAM and 156 shaders or something funky like that.

You should fill out your system sepcs Esse, but instead of writing 8800GT in for your video card, write in GTS240, it will make people think you're cooler than if you had an 8800GT when they read your specs

+1, G92 is standing the test of time. good to see it with improved clock speeds too, would be nice to see the GTS 240 and 250 with 1gb as stock, but it probably wont happen.

The performance of 8800GT is still really good, and it fits extacly where it need to be, so it's more cost effective to re-uses it.

I can play FEAR 2 with AA x4, and AF x16 at 1680x1050 with a single 8800GT just fine.

There is no point making a new card with reduced performance, when there are already cards fit into that range.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are some serious design differences between 8800GT, 9800GT and now GTS 240. My guess would be cheaper components and lighter circuit power design in each following generation, and I don't mean "lighter" and "cheaper" in a good sense. Those with original 8800GT cards probably have better samples on their hands than those with these watered down and budgeted revisions. Heck, the G92 itself is nothing but a budgeted version of G80 to begin with. nVidia is really squeezing every last drop with these revisions. And with their financial situation (didn't they recently say that their sales dropped 60% ?) we can probably expect a another cheaper revision or two.

When developers said the gtx280 is nothing more than a g80 or g92 with more shaders some of us laughted and believed the marketing bullshit Nvidia said.
Well this is the proof they didn't changed much of the very old arhitecture and the old 8800gtx and ultra could be faster than the very new gt240 , how old is the 8800gtx/ultra ?
The stalling in their development of better graphics card is called greed and not wanting to spend more money on research , it's happening at AMD/ATI too , how can the new 4890 be just an overcloked 4870 , pure greed , in the case of ATI desperation in lack of money for research but they would've done it even if they had the money.
They like the current situation and want to squezze as much money as possible from current generation before they need to come up with a better solution.
Well it's not like we have ground breaking graphics on the PC or tons of games but still if you want to make money bring something new to the table , it's not like you sell energy or oil and you don't have to research anything.

i saw a great thing at a computer expo not long ago - 8800GT for $150, 8800GTS (G92) for $210, and 9800GT for $280. sigh.

If it was ATi doing the same people would just be asking for more innovation and not bashing them like they do Nvidia. I just think they need to add tri-SLi to the new GTS 240. G80 is very different than G92, and GTxxx series is very different aswell. You should just measure it by price/performance ratio like any rational mind would. These emotions that people are expressing is pretty useless in computing.

You simply evaluate its worth by its performance and price tag.

Its not even close to a flagship so no need to be frustrated.

PS. I bet they will charge too much for it though until its got some age on it.

8800GTX/Ultra were high end cards. GTS240 is more a lower mid range and the prices are good so why complain.

The GT300 is meant to be released close to the end of this year and the GTS200 cards were mentioned months ago.

This is how many CPU and GPU cards are made. The first generation is made, then they get clocked higher.

Ok , i would buy the RECESSION excuse if the 8800GT was only once rebranded , BUT IS THE SECOND TIME AND THE FIRST TIME WITH THE 9800GT THERE WAS NO RECESSION.
It has little to do with the economy problems , the business plan is made far into the future , it's not like they plan a new generation today and in 3-4 months they release it , they do it in 1-2 years.
Well we could say the economy problems put their plans on hold for the new generation but let's see what the GT300 will bring , hope it's not a die shrink of GT285 , overcloked and sligthly changed to be compatible with dx11.
And about the 8800 ultra high end , it was ultra high end but it's a few years old , about 3 years ago if i'm not wrong , isn't this a bit much ? we were used to see a cheap mainstream card beat the crap out of a 1-2 years old top card , not anymore.
