AMD GPG To Make and Break Partnerships With AIBs

AMD's graphics product group, the core division that handles the company's ATI graphics and AMD chipset product lines, is said to be engaging in a reshuffling of its add-in board partners (AIBs). These are companies that manufacture and/or sell ATI Radeon-based graphics cards. With the recent success of the Radeon HD 4000 series graphics processors, the company added two more popular AIBs: Pine Group (XFX Graphics) and Gainward, a subsidiary of Palit.

Inter-AIB competition meant that a few weaker, non-performing AIBs have come to light, which AMD is reportedly contemplating breaking partnership with. GeCube is the first brand. GeCube is the channel-vendor brand for InfoTek Corp, a manufacturing partner for AMD GPG. Speculation is rife about hardware giant ASUS also being in the league. The most plausible explanation is poor sales figures.

On the other hand, a Chinese company that is relatively unknown to the Western markets yet not new to selling graphics cards, Colorful is joining AMD's league as an AIB.

whats the point of breaking partnerships? they are selling cards anyway, not much but something.
I'm guessing it brings in some money, at least.

Trim off Companies that are weak, and trust me there has been alot of controversy over GeCube, from fake cards being sold to just totally worthless components.

Yep, no single ROG mobo based on an AMD chipset... if I take a look at other mainboard manufacturers, none of them offer super-hyped-up mainboards as they do for the i7.

Yep, no single ROG mobo based on an AMD chipset.

And it never said a thing about Motherboards now does it.....They might have an ROG Amd 890FX board. They might drop ASUS as video cards but they can not afford to loose them as a motherboard manufacture.

well apparently that ROG 4870 isnt that popular, Neither the DK cards, yet apparenly the DK cards are the money makers for Asus.

ASUS cards don't sell because they are overpriced. Their 1gb model is 250$ while HIS and Sapphire's are 200$. What's the point of paying 50$ more for the ASUS one? I'm kinda glad to see ASUS get dropped honestly. I love their products but they are just so damn exspensive. HIS FTW

ASUS cards don't sell because they are overpriced. Their 1gb model is 250$ while HIS and Sapphire's are 200$. What's the point of paying 50$ more for the ASUS one? I'm kinda glad to see ASUS get dropped honestly. I love their products but they are just so damn exspensive. HIS FTW

I owned a HIS 2900 and its was a beast! Great card. Anyway I just bought an Asus 4850 for 114 bucks. I think it depends on where you look.

Yea my 4830 from ASUS was 88$, but their higher end cards are just too exspensive. I'd rather have the HIS HD 4870 1gb for 190$ rather than a ASUS for 250$. It's the same thing with the X2's, 415$ for sapphire, 489$ for ASUS.

This is good thing, trim out the weaker partners tthat aren't performing to make the ones that are moving products happier.

I think it's a bad decision to drop Asus , if you look on newegg asus 4850 cards are the second most sold if you base the decision on most reviews.

Nope since there are 2 ROG boards based on x58 (rampage extreme II and the new gene), so it's not a TWIMTBP thing, it's probably because asus see amd boards as more best bang for buck boards since if people had more money they are more likely (read: generally, obviously it depends on personal preference and what you want ohe pc to do) to buy a higher end intel setup such as core i7 and thus not want to waste money on a rog board, shame really as a rog amd chipset board would be really nice to have...

It doesn't make sense why ATI would drop AIB partners for poor sales figures - unless I'm very wrong, AIBs buy the GPUs from ATI, so even if their cards don't sell ATI still makes money. The only reasons I can think of is (a) pressure from the AIBs that sell more ATI cards, (b) ATI having issues with lack of product support from AIBs with mediocre sales.

Oh and BTW, nothing wrong with Colorful cards, my brother has a pair of their 7900 GS models which have been running flawlessly for nearly 2 years now.

yea, i agree, not only do their cards kick ass but AMD shouldn't messing with Asus as they are one of biggest if not the biggest board vendors and AMD cant afford to have problems with them. As Shadowfold sed, their cards are pricey, and that has possibly resulted in lower sales but as long as they are selling them thats more money for AMD/ATI, even though its not as much as they wanted but its still not worth dropping them and loosing that revenue, especially at a time like this. GeCube, i can kinda understand, they had issues and their cards are not what they used to be.

Asus DK series is pretty damn awesome and gives me some fantastic clocks. I love the 1gb card which I got for 229.00 with free shipping. HIS and the like had theirs going for like 20 to 40 bucks more when I got mine from the egg.

I have the ASUS HD4850, non reference. I bought it because of its low price and back then I THOUGHT Asus=quality. But I haven't exactly liked this card. Should have got a card with reference board. I didn't do my research back then. I wouldn't care so much if asus would stop making Ati cards. But yeah, this particular card is most probably one of the most sold asus ati cards. I believe the major problems that some users have experienced, boils down to the non-reference board with the cheaper components.

Even more so whe XFX will give you a double life time warranty too and not a 3 year warranty like ASUS.
