The Witcher 3 is not an RPG.
Whether a fan or a hater, TW3 is certainly an RPG. By any standard of RPG’s it fits the category. This is upheld by classification given by game sales sites and clients which classify it, all the major reviewers, as well as the studio which made it.

I'm intrigued, what IS an RPG in your view? What concepts or elements are in it according to you?

Game with customizable protagonist and different playstyles with it. RPG includes choices that affect your character and the way you play with him.

The only element you list and not in TW3 or any of the series is the customizable protagonist. This is not required, as RPG’s that need to tell a SPECIFIC STORY do not have customizable character.

Reading through almost all the characteristics in the following links, it is as I said: the Witcher series is most definitely RPG.

https://www.techopedia.com/definition/27052/role-playing-game-rpg

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Role-playing_video_game

https://levelskip.com/rpgs/good-rpg

It seems what you really don’t like is having a white haired character to play with instead of who you want (that’s ok though, personal preference). That doesn’t change it from RPG, since as you can read, many in the field force a character on you if it is important to the story....especially if the story is well-written.

@rtwjunkie Withcer 3 was advertised to me as an RPG and it was nothing like it. I felt cheated. If heavy story focus and detailed characters makes it an RPG, then Uncharted games or any alike are RPGs. In the second link you posted are screenshots of typical RPG games and it says the root of them are tabletop games like Dungeons & Dragons from where Witcher is far off. I dislike the fact Witcher is called an RPG, because it's not a proper one at that if one at all. It is much more an adventure action game, where you talk to people and fight with the arsenal and character defined from the very beginning.

LOl...cheated. I’m glad you let a game affect you so personally.

In reality, action and combat take a backseat to the conversations, exploration, storytelling and character development.

Fighting is the worst part of the game, and it’s a good thing too, because it is not the game’s focus.

Just say you didn’t like it. I would applaud you and respect that much more than you trying to make a case that it isn’t an RPG.

@rtwjunkie It is true that I don't like the game and I feel cheated because I was expecting a different kind of game, since it was marketed as an RPG.

I'm sorry but I will block/ignore you now because I don't approve your attitude.

Awesome, someone else that doesn’t argue their point very well and resorts to infantile blocking.

Bravo!, btw for finally just admitting it’s not a game you like. I respect that.

However, you are fairly clueless on RPG’s. I suggest you stay away from all of them, because no RPG carries every single characteristic of the genre.

If only people did "REAL research, it's pretty sad really, people have the whole frigging internet and they cannot find what they need to know or take a single websites thought.

Like it's really bad even more with steam and if your interested in a game that steam sells go frigging watch some people playing it. It;'s that dam simple.

A definition is what it is, you are at liberty to disagree but that does not change the definition of what an RPG is. Literally it is a game where you assume a role and are presented with choice and consequence within that role. In The Witcher it is VERY clear you assume the role of Geralt of Rivia and not some customized nobody like you do in Skyrim. Beyond that, however, you can play Geralt just as you would like it, you can focus on three armor types, you can focus on Signs or melee or even items/tools/potions, and you can customize that to your liking.

It is true many games borrow some of that customization but that is then marketed as having RPG elements. But in The Witcher, the vast majority of game time and focus is on conversation, diplomatic choices, on relationships between people and factions, etc etc. And as a player you can even choose to focus more on story than on combat in its difficulty options.

What you are referring to is an action adventure with RPG elements and TW3 is closer to a true RPG than that. The reason TW3 didnt answer to your needs is because YOU mistook the game and have your definitions mixed up. So you should take this as a learning experience rather than point fingers...

@Vayra86 Indeed we have different definitions of a genre in our heads, but I must say that Witcher 3 is what you told but reversed: I described an RPG and The Witcher 3 is an action game with things that seem like RPG elements. Remember that you cannot choose what spells you use, the leveling only boosts stats and doesn't change the way you play. The weapons you can use are a bow and a sword and you must use them. There you see that the gameplay is predefined almost in every possible way expect in the way how the main story and side stories progress. The Witcher 3's focus is on the story an how it unfolds, which means it's a story driven action adventure game, where the adventure part comes from the somewhat open world. No matter what CD Projekt has said, Witcher 3 is not an RPG because it doesn't play or work like one. Cyberpunk 2077 might be, but we'll see.

Are you back from your safe space yet? Good. It wasn’t my “attitude” that you decided to block me for. It was because you were unable to forment a decent argument when presented with facts which were not in keeping with your mistaken beliefs.

It's not just CDPR saying so. Literally every person in the industry says it is an RPG. It doesn't matter if you think so, you are one individual. This is NOT our opinion that it is an RPG. Read the definitions.

oh, btw, yeah, you can choose your spells. In fact you HAVE to make choices since you cannot have them all.
