man, I just bought the 34GK950. I really want the 3840 x 1600.
I was in the exact same boat. I got the same one as you a few months ago (the freesync2 model) because they ran it at a $799.00 promo price and no release timeframe what-so-ever on the 38" model. I have zero regrets, such a nice looking display at an incredible price.... but yea now knowing how awesome the 34" is, that 38" would be amazing.
was holding back from buying 34gk950f knowing the 38 inch model coming later this year... however, it's g-sync and not freesync / g-sync compatible... I don't want to be tied with Nvidia cards if I get this monitor... we'll see...
Your will is stronger than mine lol... i couldn't resist the promo price. However I will say, I would definitely go for the freesync version (I would definitely think one is coming even if it wasn't announced right now). I am running it on an nVidia card flawlessly on the 34gk. Save your $200+ for something else, and save from being tied to a GPU manufacturer in the future.
