Dell, manufacturer of high performance XPS laptop computers is preparing the M1730 model, which will follow up after their M1710. The "fully loaded" laptop will sport a Core 2 Extreme X7800 CPU running at 2.60 GHz. Graphics-wise, the base models will use an NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GS with 256MB of memory, there should also be a 512MB GeForce 8700M GT available soon.

Other rumored specs include a maximum of 4GB of RAM and a 512MB or 1GB Intel Turbo Memory option, Bluetooth 2.0, Blu-ray as well as a numeric keypad.

The laptop will be launched on the 27th of this month.

they do suck for desktops, but are one of the better laptop manufacturers (once you reinstall windows minus the added crap)

i think it looks good, apart from the keyboard being lighter (coloured) than the chassis, and the outside being red (i imagine thats optional)

Ahh... Generalization'r'us.

So far Dell reaps in the laptop industry, get your facts right :p. Also, their budget systems are great, hassle free. The only thing that sucks about dell is the midrange to high ends. Now THOSE are overpriced.

Apple has the "laptop market" when it comes to nice laptops. Dell just fits what the industry wants.. price, and mass quantity, for the basics.

note: Typing this from a core 2 duo Latitude D620.

I hate the dell desktops. flat out. :shadedshu

The laptops are starting to improve quite a bit. Since its cheaper and easier for them, they have more universal parts, which is as close to as a standard as anyone will see in the laptop industry these days.

Yeah, most people will factor only specifications in for a laptop purchase, theres simply so much more when it comes to selection.

I prefer one that is physically user "friendly" if I'm going to spend a ton of time on it un-docked.

Its the same thing people do for desktops with keyboards and mice- except most people don't bother on laptops for some reason.

This D620 I'm using is really cramped when it comes to typing, the touchpad is bland and its got 2 sets of mouse buttons and 2 ways to move the mouse around. Totally redundant, and gets in the way.

Have you seen the screen on the D610's, D620's and D630's?

Absolutely PATHETIC :shadedshu

People complained to apple about a similar problem these dells have, but after using this for a week, my macbook pro is gonna look crystal clear+2 :O

People are picky about LCD's you buy, GOTTA have that extra 300 DPI on a mouse.....

but people still go and buy whatever lcd dell or hp throws into their laptop.....

The screen looks "faded" and has like.. no color vibrancy at all... its so bland..

This got me thinking about the D610 screen. I didn't remember it being the same, so I grabbed one off our shelves...

Wow, that thing actually has a decent resolution. Like 1400x1050 or something.

That LCD doesn't look bad at all when pumped to normal native res.

The 14" wide on the d620 at 1440x900 looks like shit.

i used to hate on dell, but i've been hunting for a laptop for college, and they are the best! i got to build a beefed up inspiron 1520 for 1,250, when similarly built it would have cost 1,800+ elsewhere. the ONLY bad thing is their processing and shipping won't allow the thing to get to my house til' the 22nd. but for what i'm getting, that's not a bad sacrifice.

The best laptops I've ever used when it's not on a desk are IBM (yes IBM I would think Lenovo would be the same, but I'm not really sure) thinkpads. Even with a 14" screen it had a perfect keyboard. They didn't get past warm on my lap, and were extremely light. As far as the double two mouse buttons and two ways? That's a business laptop feature (the pointer and trackpad) some people, like my dad, who have used those forever aren't that great with the trackpad compared to the pointer. In all honesty the pointer is better because you can cover much more screen with it, but I have a hard time getting it to the icons, so I usually end up using the trackpad for the rest.

Anyways, this laptop seems like the LAN laptop, the kind you bring to your friends house and set it on a desk, not something you use on a plane.

This is something most often overlooked. why does the trackpad suck? Apple enlarged the Powerbook trackpad with the Macbook pro to be like 4 inches wide, and it can cover as much space as the "pointer" in less or the same amount of time, while remaining accurate, which the pointer does not. The trackpad on this D620 is about 2inches wide and an inch and a half tall.. theres almost NOTHING there to use LOL.

Dell and the like, just prefer to band-aid it with a dual pointer :ohwell:

But yeah, Thinkpads are nice when going mobile. Dells have always been more desktop friendly.

go take your wacmac back and be an American

wow, so apparently all those MADE IN MALASYIA DELL LAPTOPS are all full of american pride right? :wtf:

Perhaps thinking before insulting someones patriotism next time.

Granted, its nice specs, but I just dont see Dell making a huge splash with these. High priced laptops is a niche market and very few folks shop at sed market.

2 finger scrolling+2 finger right click is the best thing since sliced bread.

When web browsing I opt for that, rather than a mouse, because I can sit anywhere and scroll and navigate just as fast as a normal mouse :D

I really wish PC's would steal this idea, but apple will probably pull out the patent papers on anyone that does.

It would definitely give windows a better selection of crappy trackpads :shadedshu

dippy, nearly every single thread i've ever seen you comment in, you are always taking the defensive with apple. complaining about everything gets annoying from anybody, so tone it down and act rational even if other people are not.

somebody else said something about how ridiculous the xps prices are. they're right! when i was hunting down for a laptop, the xps's were way too overpriced. i'm pretty impressed with dell, because they beat sony, hp, and toshiba for the price point by 300-500 dollars. then of course there's apple that offers their macbook pro for 2,000+ bucks.

$1800 (I love educational discount) However, for the D610/D620 market, the more comparable option is the $1k macbook rather than the ~$2k pro, it has pretty much all the same features as the D620, including the touchpad+2finger abilitys.

XPS's are better suited for comparison to the pro which will outspec them gpu wise, but feature wise you'd find the macbook pro VERY competative.

and this D620 was just opened about 2-3 days ago. Infact, the box is still here.
Compare please ;)

The XPS line will actually be VERY close to the macbook pro specs, so dell will have to have a $300 advantage minimum, imo to "beat" the MBP.

And please note, apple HQ is 1 Infinite Loop, California. (Steve jobs+steve wozniak cofounded, San jose, CA)

Its wrong that I correct people's FUD about apple being foreign, Costing $2700, and Apple's features which compete in the exact same market (ZOMG back2school!) as dell?

People complain about applications on a mac. Am I not allowed to complain about the major drawbacks of a PC? Is anyone going to argue that a piss poor excuse for a touchpad is good?

Do these have dual layer dvd burners yet?

http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APP...6894003/wo/UY74oz7hb3xb2AsSgo1w9J3YaMw/1.?p=0

what are major drawbacks of a pc? viruses? o maybe macs dont have viruses because hackers are to lazy to hack macs... because frankly... whats there to hack? your porn collection?

anyway it also says that this notebook can get the intel turbo memory... which i have to say is pretty dang cool in theory but is it worth it?

what are major drawbacks of a pc? viruses? o maybe macs dont have viruses because hackers are to lazy to hack macs... because frankly... whats there to hack? your porn collection?

Whats there to hack on windows that isn't on os x? :p

I bet my Mac would be worth upwards of 20x more than your pc would be, if you hacked in and stole my data ;)

Hey Dippy, it was advice. Whether you take it or leave it is your choice. It's just that people would probably respect your opinion more if you acted more rational instead of going ape nuts about anything Apple. Just my 2 cents.
