Unless you have been living under a rock, chances are you are following the news about the Russia-Ukraine war disputes. Not to get too political, we are here to report about your favorite rivals—AMD and Intel—officially stopping the delivery of processors to Russia and Belarus. Firstly, an AMD representative told PCWorld that "Based on sanctions placed on Russia by the United States and other nations, at this time AMD is suspending its sales and distribution of our products into Russia and Belarus. It is all AMD products and products we power (PCs, etc) in Russia and Belarus." Additionally, Intel posted an official quote, which you can find below.

Intel said:
Intel condemns the invasion of Ukraine by Russia and we have suspended all shipments to customers in both Russia and Belarus. Our thoughts are with everyone who has been impacted by this war, including the people of Ukraine and the surrounding countries and all those around the world with family, friends and loved ones in the region.

"We are working to support all of our employees through this difficult situation, especially those with close ties to this region. We have launched an employee donation and matching campaign through the Intel Foundation that has already raised over $1.2 million for relief efforts, and we are proud of the work our teams in surrounding areas including Poland, Germany and Romania are doing to aid refugees. We will continue to stand with the people of Ukraine and the global community in calling for an immediate end to this war and a swift return to peace.

Lots of Russian citizens out there that oppose or have nothing to do with the war are going to suffer because of these types of virtue signalling PR stunts.

Nothing make russian gamers madder than stopping them from rushing B

I don't think sanctioning entire country is ever a right move, so many innocent people will suffer, but realistically even if Intel/AMD intended to continue sales, Russian will have major difficulty in clearing payment, so ultimately it doesn't really matter. Though, in terms of GPU sales, I suppose Russian will have greater incentive to secure more GPU than CPU, be it from AMD/Intel/NVIDIA, since cryptos are okay tool for bypassing sanctions.

Symbolic but completely pointless, really.

Russia will simply buy them from a third party supplier.

There will already be plenty of people drooling at the money they'll make from selling to the Russians in countries like China, Pakistan, India and all the rest where supplies of CPU's can go to.

Russian crude oil can't even figure out how to sell their oil right now. How exactly is Russia going to "buy" from a 3rd party supplier? With the Rubles that are quickly dropping? Through what banking system? Russia was just banned from SWIFT, so good luck even transferring any kind of money out of the country.

Russian oil isn't even sanctioned yet, and they're having issues selling oil. AMD / Intel are 100% part of the sanction regime, so all participating countries are not allowed to sell chips to Russia.

-------

China isn't helping Russia yet with the sanctions actually. It seems like China is trying to position itself as the neutral mediator between Ukraine / Russia, since so many countries have denounced Russia. (And honestly, peace talks in Beijing sound more fair and honest than Peace Talks in Belarus).

-------

EDIT: Economic professors are suggesting that these sanctions are so severe, that Russia may have issues with food supply (in particular: foreign seeds like potatoes) and basic necessities like clothes. The last thing they will want to spend their precious little money on is chips / high tech stuff.

In a world where anything you don't like becomes "political," this is a hopeless request.

Lots of Russian citizens out there that oppose or have nothing to do with the war are going to suffer because of these types of virtue signalling PR stunts.
That's part of the point sadly. They want them to get angry at the flame that started this new age of Russian economic suffering, and you don't need to look outside Moscow for that.

Russia was just banned from SWIFT
Mastercard and Visa dropped them too.

You need money to buy things. At the rate the Ruble is crashing, that may prove limiting.

Gives them an incentive to overthrow the government.

And there's lots of Ukrainian citizens who have nothing to do with this and they're having their homes shelled right now....no action in this world is perfect, no action is without compromise, it's all a matter of looking at the positives and negatives and seeing which outweighs which, personally, if I was a russian, I'd be happy to go without some consumer goods to end the war. In America, gas is going through the roof, and I commute a loooooong distance to work and my expenses are going through the roof, but it's a small price to pay while people are dying. In Britain, for example, there are literally everyday citizens, not ex-military, who are volunteering to go over to Ukraine to fight for them, that's a huge sacrifice and a selfless act...I think anyone who thinks ending a war is important enough to suffer some austerity should do.

While that's true, millions of Ukrainians have already been affected by the... situation.

The sanction regime is going to be much milder on Russia than the punishment Russia is currently delivering to Ukraine. Its quite unfair to say "think of the innocent Russian citizens" when Ukrainian nuclear power plants are being attacked by Russian artillery (one of the reasons why I can't sleep right now...)

Forcing the Russians citizens to have a degree of pain, reciprocal to the actions of their leaders, is one of the few negotiating points we have remaining. I know that the Russian leadership hasn't traditionally cared for its citizens, so I'm not naive enough to say that Russian citizens should "rise up" against their leaders. Instead, I offer another far more practical option: leave the country.

Ukrainian citizens are fleeing their country under far harsher terms. Russian citizens can do the same to their country to escape the sanctions if they so desire.

--------

There's a Ukrainian children who requires dialysis each day to stay alive in a Kyiv hospital right now. Power-interruptions and shelling has forced this kids into the subways under the city. Russian citizens likely don't have anything close to the pains that the Ukrainians are facing right now. (For now anyway. Volatile situation in Russia and Putin can change things very swiftly)

------

In any case, the ultimate goal of the Sanctions is to punish the Russian leadership / Oligarchs. With estimated losses in the dozens-of-billions of dollars (even as the Moscow Stock market has remained closed this entire weak to stem the bleeding...), these business leaders are feeling significant pains from the sanctions. While normal citizens have been "caught up" in these sanctions, no one can doubt the efficacy of the sanctions anymore, now that they're in action and now that we've seen Russian trade grind to a halt.

Actually, India is trying to work out a system where Russia can use rupees to do trade. The PRC doesn't seem particularly interested at this point.

I'm sure they will do it.

I'm sorry for the political post, but all we are doing (and rightly so), should be done everytime someone starts a war (lots of candidates here, including some big names), kills someone (Saudi Arabia), mistreat their own citizens (half the world), mistreats others even without starting a war (lots of candidates), tries to start problems in other countries with secret services (obvious candidate here), decides do annex others territories (Israel comes to mind), mistreat their minority indigenous people (lots of candidates here), etc...

But i think if we did this, there would be less very little world without sanctions, backlash, etc... But it would be a better place for all
