ASUS UK Launches Trade-in Program for Graphics Card Upgrades

ASUS UK launched a trade-in program for graphics not unlike the Apple trade-in program for the latest iPhones. The company is offering cash payments ranging between GBP £65 to £300 for trading in your old graphics card. The way this works is, you purchase an ASUS GeForce RTX 40-series "Ada" graphics card from the company's ROG Strix or TUF Gaming series, by paying its full price upfront. You then submit a trade-in claim on the ASUS website within 15 days of delivery of your new graphics card. You then mail in your old graphics card within 30 days of receiving a trade-in approval from ASUS. Within 30 days of ASUS receiving your old graphics card, assuming it's in working condition and matches your trade-in claim, ASUS pays you the trade-in price directly to your bank account. For now the program is limited to the UK, and to participating online retailers, only UK residents can avail it, and the qualifying new graphics cards only cover the RTX 4070 Ti and RTX 4080 (but not the RTX 4090).

Well, they need that sort of thing to justify their pricing. I bit the bullet and bought a 4070ti, the very cheapest you can get in the UK, a Gainward card at £799. It's ultra quiet, and no coil whine. As for performance, it's where you'd expect a 4070ti to be. Asus Strix is 30%+ more expensive at £1050. Their cheapest on the site i saw was still £100 more than what I paid. They've been milking Asus buyers for ages now. I doubt they sell many of the Strix range at the prices they ask, so this might help out. Though clearly, they'll sell your cards on for more than what you get (as is the way with all trade-in schemes).

Im guessing is is the reason for the trade in. Hey ASUS? How about you lower your stupid prices to incentivize sales instead of offering a roundabout way to get some of the money back?

This is a pointless excercise, their cards were overpriced to begin with, so now theyre offering a way to lower the price closer to MSRP levels, with your old card in exchange...

I dislike two tiered pricing:

1. Overpriced
2. Discount conditional on jumping through hoops to disguise initial overprice

it’s not unlike mail in rebates, creating burden and requiring a lot of time and follow up. I once bought a tv with mail in coupon which for various clever Administrative tricks, lost my original receipt and never got paid.

Time money warranty return opportunity lost.

Have to be careful what card you trade in. I suspect there's going to a few card models out there that will worth a lot a money in 15 -20 years from now as they become rare.

Buy purchasing 2nd hand cards they are attempting to take a slug of their competition (2nd hand cards) off the market. Less 2nd hand cards also results in keeping all GPU prices higher.

Looks like it, prices they give are pretty fair if only the prices of the new ones were fair too.

Another smart way is to stop driver support, but some users will continue to use old drivers like myself.

I don't think that's a thing.

They're not likely to get every old card off the street with this, so support rolls on.
