God of War Ragnarök Mod Removes PSN Account Requirement After Review Bombs Tank Steam Rating

God of War Ragnarök has been one of the most highly anticipated PC launches in recent history, although the launch has been somewhat controversial. After launching on PC via Steam and Epic Games on September 19, players discovered that the single-player narrative-driven action-adventure game would require an online PSN account in order to play. This account requirement somewhat predictably resulted in significant backlash, which, in turn, resulted in a third-party mod to remove the account requirement.

Shortly after the launch of God of War Ragnarök, the game's Steam page became inundated with negative reviews because of the PlayStation Network account required to play the game. Less than a week after launch, God of War's rating on Steam is a solid "Mixed," with only 69% positive reviews. That is compared to Metacritic's user reviews that place the PS5 version of the game at 8.1/10. Shortly after the review bombs started, though, a free mod called NoPSSDK appeared on Nexus Mods and GitHub that removes the PSN account requirement from God of War Ragnarök.

[Editor's note: Our in-depth performance review of God of War Ragnarök, with testing on 35 GPUs, is now live]

Interestingly, removing the PSN account requirement only seemingly required adding two DLL files to the game's install files. At the time of writing, NoPSSDK has only amassed 1,199 total downloads from Nexus Mods, while there are at least 4,362 reviews of the game on Steam. This isn't even the first time in recent memory that a PlayStation Network account requirement has caused a stir for PC ports of PS5 games. Earlier this year, Helldivers 2 added a PSN account requirement after players had already purchased and logged potentially hundreds of hours in-game. It's also worth noting that a PlayStation Network account is free, although the account does ask users for their date of birth, so it could be used as a means to prevent players under the 17+ age restriction from accessing the game. There are also likely at least a few gamers with privacy concerns, as well as those that simply don't like the idea of a single player game requiring an internet connection and an online account in order to play.

The biggest difference between how Sony handled the PSN account in Helldivers 2 and God of War Ragnarök is that players knew from the outset that it would be a requirement in God of War, while it was added to Helldivers 2 months after launch. There's also much more of an incentive for Sony to require a PSN account for Helldivers 2, which is exclusively played online, compared to God of War, which is a single-player, narrative-driven experience. Sony eventually also removed the account requirement for Helldivers 2, presumably as a result of the player backlash, but it seems unlikely that it will do the same for God of War Ragnarök—especially now that there is a third-party mod that removes the account requirement.

Update Sep 25th: It appears as though the God of War Ragnarök NoPSSDK mod has disappeared from Nexus Mods. In a post to the site's X page, Nexus Mods claims that the author of the mod removed it from the site, but there has been no comment from the mod creator. The creator had also previously committed to maintaining the mod, even if Sony tried break compatibility via an update to the game.

By the way: We've noticed that the popular PSN-bypass mod for God of War Ragnarök has been removed from our site by the author, and so we've reached out to find out why.

I looked at several review video of this game, look bland and boring, paying full price and kneeling down to Sony for this scrap is a bit much

More like the fact that a dll swap/delete is enough to circumvent PSN...

I haven't paid full price for a single player game in 25 years. Waiting a couple of years for the fully patched and polished game means I pay far less for a much better gaming experience the first playthrough and unfortunately the vast majority of modern AAA games especially don't even warrant another playthrough later on anyway. Hell, a lot aren't really even worth the first playthrough imo. Lot of shit games out there.

Sony keeps trying to pad those PSN Account numbers to show off to investors, but it keeps backfiring. Why can't they just be happy with sales figures?

Because, like most publishers, they hope to gain a massive audience on their own store to peddle their crap that some gamers would ordinarily avoid or that most gamers would probably never even hear about otherwise.

So where were all these people for the Rockstar games?

PC gamers love their Rockstar. Rockstar doesn't generate enough contempt. Not saying, as a PC gamer, they don't deserve some contempt for treating us as second class when they make billions in revenue from us but they continue to get away with it anyway. They are the all time king of owning the double dippers. 200 million GTA V units sold and just wait until Fall next year when GTA VI rolls out. It promises to be the greatest entertainment launch of all time. It should be quite a spectacle to behold. And, yes, there will be quite a few PC gamers buying a new console just to play it right away and then selling the console later when the superior PC version gets launched and buy the game a second time.

I think getting PC Gamers to step up to the plate and buy a £700 console is a bit of a stretch.

I remember a lot of whining and complaining about the rockstar launcher, even as of a few years ago, with how unstable and BS it was. However, since the majority buy it for GTA online, the point is totally moot and drowned out by all the talk of GTA online issues. Everyone who cared about the single player has long finished the game and left already, or were driven away by R*'s behavior.

Quite a few do though. I've seen them post about doing that on PC gaming sites. Some are not so honest and buy the console, keep it for a few weeks to play the game and then return it for a 10% restocking fee. Some play it for longer and sell the console as used and some just keep the console and buy more games but the console exclusives are a dwindling creature so not so much do that anymore. I'm not saying millions and millions do any of that but on a GTA title quite a few will.

It's also totally pointless, just in general, but also specifically for this game, its single player. Why do you need a PSN account to play a single player game?

My point being that £700 Its a hell of a lot of money compared to a PS4 which can be had for £260.

£700 is a hell of a lot of money for a console and its a hell of a lot of money to play loosey goosey with and not everyone is going to have £700 to put down on a console even if they are done with it after a week and pay a 10% restocking fee. Although they'll probably have a lot of luck selling it online. Im sure there will be people happy to snap it up for even as little as £50 off the RRP.

Obviously these people could also be made of money, In which case £700 is basically monopoly money to them and it wouldnt matter if the console was £1500 or £999, they would probably still buy it anyway.

Not sure what reviews you looked at, but the game itself is amazing.
It was the reason I ended up with a PS5 (though it was hardly used since).

Needing the PSN login on PC is just stupid on Sony's end though. Those low reviews are going to hurt their sales a lot.

Looking at youtubers gameplays, everything looks flat and ungrounded because of missing ambient occlusion. I played alot of games with RT and PT so I kinda notice these kinds of thing.

at steamdb, GOW ragnarok already fell to 23th in best selling, Black Myth Wukong is still selling better despite coming out a month before LOL (#18 best selling)

I didn't say everyone was doing it. Also the word is that GTA VI won't be releasing on the PS4. It will be exclusively for PS5, PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series X.

I'm not trying to say it's worth it to lose $70 doing the less than 30 day return or losing far more selling the console months later. Just that some GTA fans do some radical shit to not have to wait a year or two to play it on PC or at least they claim that they do. I don't know why they would just make that up. If I were that much of a rabid GTA fan I would be too embarrassed to admit it.

Honestly needing to have a studio account just to play games is beyond obnoxious. I ran into that with an EA sports game (yeah, I know, but it was only $9). Bought it on Steam, then had to install EAs ugly app AND create an EA account. It really starts making gaming a headache.

In my opinion, signing into the PSN account is not a big deal. I think this whole review bomb and ressentiment has just been band wagoned. Sony should add more usability for it though, cross saves between PC and PS5.

So where were all these people for the Rockstar games?
Rockstar gets it fair share of criticism with each game launch whether its botched "remastered" launch, GTA-5 taking ages for PC launch with no physical copies available for purchase, Hot coffee mod for GTA-SA, horrible and unoptimized crap what was entire GTA-4, etc...

Really encouraging to go to piratebay to get those Sony games once they are cracked. Get you shit together Sony and dont fuck it up with PSN account requirements.
Is piratebay still operational? remember seeing couple of torrent sites and even uTorrent going out of business in last couple of years.

When i saw this article the other day. I knew it wouldnt last on Nexusmods for long.

Its a rather long story but NexusMods have become a rather compromised source as far as neutrality is concerned. Rather than host everybody's mods. They'll only host it if it aligns with their own views or the views of their masters...The game publishers.

Sony probably told NexusMods to take it down and most likely threatened the maker of the mod with legal action if he spoke out about it hence the silence.

With how hard Sony has been flopping. Its adamant that they get as many people as they can on PSN so they can show the investors and shareholders that there is.... "Growth"

I think it was Sony clamping down as well. They can't let PC gamers slip out of their choke hold so easily. If they couldn't get the mod removed they probably would have borked it somehow in an upcoming patch.
