AMD has emerged as the clear winner in this year's Black Friday motherboard sales, securing an impressive 87.36% of unit sales and 86.5% of revenue share. Thanks to the nicely compiled data from TechEpiphany, we see that German retailer Mindfactory sold 3,800 AMD-socketed motherboard units compared to Intel's 550 units during the shopping event. The success story is particularly evident in AMD's newest AM5 socket platform, which accounted for 2,730 units sold, representing nearly 72% of AMD's total sales. This strong adoption rate of the AM5 platform suggests consumers are increasingly investing in AMD's latest technology despite the typically higher platform costs associated with newer generations. The older AM4 socket maintained a relevant market presence, with 1,070 units sold.

Meanwhile, Intel's sales were primarily driven by their LGA 1700 socket, which moved 490 units, with minimal movement in their newer LGA 1851 and older LGA 1200 platforms, selling just 40 and 20 units, respectively. The average selling price (ASP) comparison reveals an interesting dynamic, with Intel commanding a slightly higher ASP at $183 compared to AMD's $170. However, AMD's substantially higher sales volume resulted in a total revenue of $644,584 (about 86.5%), dwarfing Intel's revenue of $100,564 (13.5%). This sales distribution reflects AMD's successful strategy of offering competitive performance across various price points while maintaining strong platform compatibility and future support. The overwhelming preference for AMD's AM5 platform also indicates consumer confidence in the company's future upgrade path and platform longevity, which AMD also delivered with AM4.

OEMs like money, besides mandatory USB4 controllers on some tiers and some minor changes to lane distribution, they aren't really "new" motherboards, just refreshes.

I bet it is because Black Friday was the best time to get a new AM5 board. I bought a B650M for $129 Canadian. That is not even $100 US. What this does not tell us is how many X870E boards were sold but I am willing to bet most were X670E,B650. and A620. The Mini Itx boards were the most aggressively priced where I live with up to $200 discounts on some.

Hoping B850 boards come with with micro-ATX and ITX options and prices fall a bit. Would do a new build but pricing is just absurd right now (although that $360 USD price for 9900X is pretty great).

Nothing concrete, but I saw a lot of x870 boards oos or on back order on newegg and amazon. There were also $30-40 discounts on a good portion of boards +additional 10-20$ rebates.

So unless you were hunting for something very specific there wasn’t much reason to buy an x670/b650 board at similar price points when possible.

Because they know they need to support the motherboards over the years with AM5 for Zen 4-6.

They made a mistake with cheap x370 / b350 motherboards and they had to support them for 6 years.

X870/E has USB4 mandatory.... I feel you, I've been thinking about upgrading from AM4 for over a year now, but one of the things that held me up was the complete lack of USB4 on affordable X679/B650 motherboards. I tend to keep my systems longer and then even when upgrading, either pass the old one along to a family member or repurpose it as a server or something so it would be nice to have USb4 for some better longevity.

Because they use a bunch of useless, shiny but extremely expensive components - to name a few - WiFi 7, PCIe 5, USB 4, ultra large heatsinks, lots and lots of phases for the uber overclocked CPUs, Realtek 4080 sound, etc...

Well I snagged a ASROCK B650 HDV for $99. Super impressed with this board tbh, no ARGB headers, extra DIMM slots, M2/GPU quick release BS, random gimmicks and onboard wifi (comes with a nicely placed M.2 for adding a Wifi adapter which can be so much better than the standard onboard wifi). Nicely placed jumper for clear CMOS too and has a decent amount of fan headers. Best part is, you can literally upgrade this board and add in USB, Wifi and there's a nice spot to strap on a fan which drastically lowers VRM temps.

Honestly, why can't these manufacturers just release boards like this, maybe add in better VRM and cooling and be done with it. Also, being a 2 DIMM board with seemingly decent memory traces/routing, it overclocks the 9950x better than both the X870 tomahawk and X670E aorus pro x I have, both of which cost 3/4x the price.

Ironically, people (rightfully) complained that 6xx and 8xx board prices are stupid high and it's true but my motherboard of choice in this generation is the cheapest i've had in more than a decade.

I only check germany based shops.
The A620 based AM5 ones are hardly listed anymore. I think it's because of the low wattage these mainboards can provide to the cpu socket.

B650 mainboards are plenty on the market and 40% cheaper as the MSI B550 Gaming EDGE WIFI i purchased in the past. Without considering the inflation for the past 3 years.
There are plenty of B650 mainboards available in the price range of 95-110€. Dirt cheap considering the awful inflation from the past three years on noodles, milk, diesel, energy and other goods.

You have to know, there are only the high end X870 mainboards on the market as of now. the cheaper 800 board may come 2025 or 2026

--

I would ignore the B or X based chipset name of the mainboard. I would look for the features a am5 mainboard offers and what it costs. You may also look out for a deal or cashback.

Why I haw to look in old internet archive to see what motherboards Asus made in particular date 2008- 2009.
Why not show all products in an orderly way?
Olso in this site I can't go back to particular date.

They do though? The sheer number of skus is often staggering, and they have a multitude of options and variations at a number of price points from barebones to excessive.

I’ve never seen so many people make complaints over motherboard options, at least when it comes to AMD, you have like 80+ options to pick from on AM5 depending on budget and need for x feature.

Why are the new generation AMD Motherboards so much more expensive? Serious question.
If you see AM4, a motherboard sold in 2017 probably keeps getting support for new CPUs 7 years latter. My 90 euros MSI X470, got a BIOS update 2 months ago. That support costs. With AM5, motherboard makers where hearing AMD saying that the socket will be another one that will last for many years and accept many generations of Ryzen CPUs. So they integrated that extra support cost in the motherboard prices. Also with the AMD platform being competitive, if AMD motherboards where staying cheap, the Intel platform would look very expensive. People would prefered to buy the cheaper AMD motherboards and expensive Intel motherboards would be staying on the selves collecting dust. So they had to increase AMD motherboard prices to the level of Intel motherboard prices. It wasn't like that in the past where AM3 needed to be cheap for the AMD platform to look VFM with Bulldozer CPUs not being competitive. Not even with AM4 considering that AMD managed to get on top of the charts with Zen 3. Before that Intel was still considered by most as the top brand.

a) AMD is competitive in the CPU sector now
b) There is no "good" company

So a). Even though a lot of people will tell you that it's totally fine when AMD raises prices, but not when XYZ does.

The price for an X870 ITX board was straight up perverted, more than double what I paid for a high end X570 ITX. They can rot on shelves at those prices.

There is no logical reason for it other than a cash grab. I just bought the MSI Carbon X870E because the X670E version was sold out. Everything I saw, it was essentially the same damn board. I would have loved to have had saved $100. I guess they wanted to satisfy the motherboard makers with a new board with the same MSRP. Since Intel isn't selling so well, they need to make the motherboard makers and customers happy at the same time.

Why are the new generation AMD Motherboards so much more expensive? Serious question.

Both PCIe 5.0 and DDR5 double their respective speeds. This requires a more consistent and precise motherboard process and design.

The individual chips that power PCIe 5.0 (and other stuff, USB4.0 etc. etc.) are also a touch more expensive.
