12Gb GPUs already obsolete, brand new game takes up to 18Gb Vram at 1440p

Consoles don't have higher settings to enable. It will be more Vram on PC due to expectations of gamers.
there is that too, I do agree. I am just saying minimum for console like settings. But a cross mix between some form of optimization, I would wager that 12GB is still enough for slightly better than console settings. But that is only assuming on the optimization part from the developers. Add in DLSS/FSR and it may help.

"Future Proof" is a myth in PC hardware. It has never existed and most likely never will.
I think back to a member here who, around 8 years ago, proposed a build with 4 Maxwell Titan X which was almost $5,000 in GPUs alone. He said he wanted to build a beast that would be future proof for at least 7 years. SLI died years ago and most people didn't see it coming but it did come. Another member bought a Titan Z for $3,000 and complained because of lack of support from Nvidia even during the Maxwell series. He said that he expected Nvidia to give the best quality support for his Titan Z for at least 10 years because of the price he paid.

Who knows what the future will bring but whatever it does it is certain that it will make today's hardware obsolete and puny in comparison.
Only way to future proof is to get the highest multicore cpu you can get, then do parts changes over the years.

I still feel that the majority of people in here getting overly defensive about this subject are Nvidia owners who got shafted in the Vram department. Sure there are a ton of factors that are contributing to the increasing demands on Vram but if Nvidia just equipped their cards with similar amount of vram to their only competitor last generation we wouldn't even be having this conversation.
I have a 4090, and before that I had a 3090, and before that a 1080ti. Meaning - im not overly defensive about vram.

Yes, the 4060 should not launch with 8gb vram.. That is a joke. BUT, with that said - and because I keep reading how DOA and obsolete 8gb cards are, that is just not true - not true at all. Yes, they can't max out textures in some games, you have to drop to high. But I mean some games are so heavy you can't even max them on a 4090, so what? I have a 3060ti in my 2nd PC and it's playing everything fine - great I might add. Really really great experience

Case Study: Forza Horizon 5
In the first capture is the result from 2021. The other, the result from 2023.

Who is to blame for the 25% boost?
The processor? I don't think so, because the result is the same as the 3070 Ti reviews in which the most powerful processors of that time were used.
SO? I don't think so, because it is the same and there are no big differences between W10 and W11/W11 22/H2.
Driver update?
Game update?
Although I suspect that the last two are to blame, I don't care. The game was and is a gem in graphics and very well optimized. For poorly optimized ones there is "clickbait", if you think the pickle is worth your money.
