The Ryzen 7 3800XT has received the biggest speed bump, by 200 MHz, up to 4.7 GHz maximum boost clock. This helps AMD's 8-core, 16-thread CPU deliver gaming FPS as good as the 3900XT at lower pricing. Our Ryzen 7 3800XT review also compares it against the Intel Comet Lake i9-10700K, which is similarly priced.

"What was AMD thinking pricing this thing at $399?"

It's the oldest marketing trick in the world. Inflate prices, then soon release a new better product at the same price and everyone is happy so you can keep higher profit margin. Plus you don't have to discount previous generation of products too much. That's exactly what NGreedia did with release of Super GPUs in Turing line. Expect these prices to translate into 4000 line.

Hmm except they've already discounted their entire zen 3xxx lineup a fair bit.
I think they want to prevent Zen+ story. 2600 was selling for 120, 2700 for 150 and 2700x for 180 bucks soon after Zen 2 release. AMD will probably try to stall prices at higher levels with XT line when Zen3 comes out. Zen2 7nm node has matured by now so AMD can hike frequency 100MHz and name CPUs XT instead of X at higher price levels.

I'd say Zen 3 is still at least a quarter if not three away. And unlike Zen+ AMD actually have the IPC & (MT) performance crown with zen2 or they don't actually need to lower their prices much, now whether they will or not is a separate debate.

For that price just get a 3900x, 30$ to get an actual improvement over a 3700x... It's reminding me a bit of what happened with the 5Ghz FX, huge price not taking into account the actual performance compared to the market, only the fact that they have a huge clock.

Admitting you bought Intel on a tech forum in 2020.... Oooooof.
Apparently I dont have issues to admit to buying whatever serves my purpose,be it from AMD or Intel.
But you do.

I don't think that he was mocking you, but rather talking about the general atmosphere of tech lately, where intel bashing became a sport.

Single clock speed is higher without OC and games benefit more from that?

What do you mean by "locked skus"? No Zen2 products are locked. Do you mean non-X?
I suspect the answers are bit of both "margin of error in testing exceeds performance gains" and "silicon lottery"
Let's face it, the XT is just a rebrand. Anyone expecting meaningful performance changes from a sticker on the box (and in this case a ID change in microcode) is being overly optimistic.

no,super line is what made turing an acceptable purchase proposition.just look at people's specs.almost no one has a 2070.no one.a x70 card,historically most popular.But there's quite a number of 2070 supers.

as for ryzen,xt line only makes non x/xt look better tbh

I mean all that jazz about intel being locked and amd allowing OC for entire lineup.
what OC ?

Ryzen has never "overclocked" simply because PBO is overclocking and that's a stock feature.

These days with both Intel and AMD the best you can really expect is an improvement in the all-core boost by going to town on the voltage and saying "to hell with these power and TDP limits"

The only difference is that Intel still put up silly paywalls with Z-series and K-series tax but enthusiasts have been making peace with that practice for a decade now....

This week in "products that should not exist": the AMD XT series CPUs! Almost certainly a prelude to unnecessarily inflated Zen 3 launch prices.

If we look only at the comparison of the Ryzen 7 3800XT vs. the Intel Core i7-10700K, we'd pick the Intel CPU.

Welp you just lost half of TPU's members with that sentence.

But it's the half who are rabid AMD fanboys, so it's actually a win.

This is a good review. It also shows my concern about what AMD is becoming.

Another Intel.

The first Generation CPU was such a huge advance in technology for AMD. Then minor ticks price VS performance for everything else afterwards.

IMHO There is NO reason why anyone should upgrade their CPU if they purchased their rigs starting from 2017 and upwards. This goes for both Intel and AMD.

If you did your research three years ago and watch the ongoing trends in the Computer Industry of that time and correctly applied it to your build. Pat yourself on your back. You won't need a real upgrade for 1 or 2 more years and then your rig might be in the 4 to 5 year range. Which is a good time to upgrade.

If you have the funds that is.

As a 3800X user myself don't even look at this thing.

Zen 3 is your next upgrade path.

AMD seem to just be clearing out excess silicon with this release.

If these chips were paired with a FCLK of 2000 that would have given a nice boost even with the same base clocks once paired with DDR4000 memory but that isn't the case sadly.
