We believe games have limitless potential, and that to do anything worthwhile in entertainment, we must bet big on our vision, on our studio, and on our incredible team of trusted creators who build unforgettable worlds that truly matter to people.

In SIE, we have found a partner who unconditionally supports us in all we are and who wants to accelerate our vision to create generation-spanning entertainment, all while preserving the creative independence that beats in Bungie's heart. Like us, SIE believes that game worlds are only the beginning of what our IPs can become. Together, we share a dream of creating and fostering iconic franchises that unite friends around the world, families across generations, and fans across multiple platforms and entertainment mediums.

Today, Bungie begins our journey to become a global multi-media entertainment company.

CREATIVE FREEDOM
Since taking flight in 1991, Bungie has always charted the future with our own star map - a path that is driven by our people and for our community. We are continuing that journey with new worlds in development, and we can't wait to share them with you.

With SIE, the potential for our universes is unlimited. Our future games will take bold steps into unexplored spaces for Bungie, continue to push the boundaries of what is possible, and will always be built on a foundation of creating meaningful, lifelong friendships and memories.

We remain in charge of our destiny. We will continue to independently publish and creatively develop our games. We will continue to drive one, unified Bungie community. Our games will continue to be where our community is, wherever they choose to play.

With SIE's support, the most immediate change you will see is an acceleration in hiring talent across the entire studio to support our ambitious vision. If this speaks to you, and you want to help us put a dent in the universe, we are hiring across all disciplines for Destiny 2 and for all new worlds beyond.

THREE DECADES AND COUNTING
What makes our worlds come to life is our community and our people in the studio. Our people are the soul of Bungie. Empowered by our people, we have pushed the boundaries of what we thought was possible and transformed who we are as a company.

Over the past 30 years, the inviting worlds we've built have turned into thriving communities, and that community is the true magic. These communities have taken Bungie beyond games. They have forged life-long bonds, and humbled us with the real, meaningful good they drive within us and the world.

More than anything, SIE understands that our people and our community are both the priority, and the heart of our success, and are willing to stand alongside us as we continue to use our platform to drive action towards a more welcoming and equitable world. Our goal is to build a place where the world's most creative and talented people can come and do their best work, no matter who they are, where they are from, or how they identify.

That's the real dent in the universe we want to make -- the one we want to last beyond us.

Be a part of this future with us. See you Starside.

I didn't think the joke that Sony should buy Bungie I made elsewhere on the web would come to pass. But Sony does need another studio to help push back against Gamepass, and Bungie may as well be one of those. In addition, Bungie has made it known in the past that they'd like to also expand their IP, specifically Destiny, beyond games, so with an in to Sony Studios, it could lead to a bigger push into the comic/show mini-series like what's going on with Halo.

Now if only Sony could force a Destiny: Reborn, getting Square to help reboot and redo Destiny so that the stupid sunsetting and reselling of old locations is done away with in favor of proper expansions, that'd be perfect.

Halo still belongs to Microsoft, with their own 343 Industries.

If this was 2007 Bungie then yeah, but they're a shell of their former glory. They've been taking the piss with Destiny 2 for years, shitting all over the fans. People thought it was Activision making them do all this crap, but once they were on their own things got even worse. No wonder the game looses players in droves.

Reminds me of when MS bought Rareware. All the golden era designers and devs left. 20 years later and they've not done anything as good as their N64 years.

Wonder what this means for the people left playing Destiny on Xbox and Windows still.

People who are supporting this as a counter to microsoft have it wrong, the way to stop a monopoly is not to create another one. If every time there is competition from another game studio, microsoft or sony can just buy them. This is a major problem that will hurt gamers.

Eh, Microsoft and Sony bought game studios that are past their prime/bloated. Video games are one of the easiest markets for a small no name player to break into so I'm not concerned at all about "gaming studio monopolies!"

I feel like they made this purchase just to stop MS from buying out everything and to stop people from sh*t posting on their twitter.

I don't like this acquisition race and also paying half of what MS paid to buy Bethesda doesn't seem like a good deal but i also think it would be extremely worse if Facebook, Apple, Amazon was to acquire precious talent/IP in the industry!

It's mostly the IP. A ton of these big name studios are riding name power when it comes to games, with a lot of the talented creative's and devs having left a long time ago. PC gamers have been living in the golden age of indie games for a few years now, it's console gamers that feel the pain of the big studios failing to innovate.

Obviously not comparable to Microsoft's deal with AB, but still seems like the answer to that. Overall I do think this is not really healthy for game companies, especially smaller ones, in the long term. Few giants owning everything can't really be that good.

My guess is they acquired Bungie (among other things) in order to have a studio highly capable in making top tier multiplayer FPS titles. In case MS pulls future CoDs from PS at some point Sony can just say "fuck it, we'll make out own CoD, with blackjack and hookers"
Bungie is probably the best available fps developer on the market at the moment (that is purchasable)

Considering they got only Destiny IP for almost half of the price that MS paid for Elder Scrolls, Fallout, DOOM, Wolfenstein, Prey, Dishonored, The Evil Within, Starfield... I would say Sony got a terrible deal.
That's what I was thinking, but maybe there was some rabbit in the hat??

So I found this pic about a who owns what in gaming.
Gaming Who owns what..png

I dont remember if there was another front page announcement on this.
I didnt know at first, but Bungie was not under anyone else's umbrella, it was a stand alone company.

yep I edited to say that Bungie was not owned by anyone else.

it curios since Sony sold SOE (PC gaming) off some time ago to focus on consoles, and now it looks like they might dip back into PC gaming again.

Yeah, Bungie always confused me the rrason they claimed for splitting with Microsoft was that they didn't want to be tied down to a single IP and off they went to activision to be tied down to a single IP since. Like a married woman who got divorced because they wanted more excitement only to jump into an abusive relationship.

MS have got a deal of the century getting Zenimax for only 7 billion. I bet it would cost them closer to 30b today if fucking Bungie is somehow worth 3.6b.

If Sony want to survive they need to kick out the Elop and stop releasing their exclusive game on PC which draws customer to their platform. Otherwise buying one studio will do nothing.

Eh, Microsoft and Sony bought game studios that are past their prime/bloated. Video games are one of the easiest markets for a small no name player to break into so I'm not concerned at all about "gaming studio monopolies!"
Buying one studio is not monopolistic, but buying a big publisher is though.
