Buying one studio is not monopolistic, but buying a big publisher is though.
This. And considering that microsoft has already been buying up a lot of larger publishers, this looks like the move by microsoft to buy up the market, which is not good. For anyone.

Likewise, this buyout of Bungie by Sony, is also a bad thing.

It's not a race against Microsoft, it's a race against Apple, Facebook, Netflix, Amazon and China.
Not in the PC and Gaming Console market's. People are tired of gaming on phones and even tablets. They want machines with real power not constrained by battery life and lethargic mobile SOC performance.. Even Apples M-X series of SOCs is lacking in comparison to a PC or Gaming Console.

Bungie hasn't been Bungie since they left Halo. Destiny is a pretend MMO at best with a forgettable story. Doesn't even feel like a Bungie title.

M$ goes out and buys the farm, Sony buys the has been that M$ took the best from before they let go and they aren't even going to make exclusives. lol. Make exclusives again if you want to sell consoles!

Eh, Microsoft and Sony bought game studios that are past their prime/bloated. Video games are one of the easiest markets for a small no name player to break into so I'm not concerned at all about "gaming studio monopolies!"

Its a different story when most games have their monthly gaming budget already allocated to a bunch of ondemand services. They're locked in, effectively, and very unlikely to 'step down' to paying for a single product. They could though, don't get me wrong, but still. Its not getting easier.

Cloud is the biggest threat right now for independent studios. Its the same principle as the platform war on mobile, except less enforced as the same device can still go offline. Though you might question how offline you can really game today.

As for this takeover... lol. Bungie is yesterday's news, already chewed apart and spat out by corporate. Now Sony's munching on the regurgitated remains. I get the counter move, but this is basically pissing away 3.6B.

If Sony want to survive they need to kick out the Elop and stop releasing their exclusive game on PC which draws customer to their platform. Otherwise buying one studio will do nothing.
Sony survives. Company's been at it much longer than MS in gaming, and more successful throughout the entire time. MS OTOH has built a long history of major fuck ups, from peripherals to the way they roll out services, to the hardware itself, to the PR surrounding it... they failed on all counts. Picked it back up, sure, but fail they did. Sony similarly screwed things up... but never the core of its product: a new console with solid (first party) titles. Sony sells hardware on the content. MS sells it on promises of unified services and connectivity. They still do! The latest release is the best proof. They had hardware, and literally then started considering what to run on it. They're still working on that, too, with the recent take over. Agile indeed... :) Their console release is literally that, releasing little chunks to finally get to some minimum viable product.

The two companies also have a radically different business approach. They can differentiate even just by doing everything differently. MS hasn't got the same agenda, they're not tied to console as Sony is, and similarly, Sony isn't tied to PCs. I'm still quite convinced cloud gaming won't be able to bleed over different markets, or really take over at all. It'll likely exist side by side with everything else.

I'm more surprised Sony hasn't bought Square Enix yet.

I really hope they don't.

The merge with Enix was bad enough.

Microsoft and sony own roughly 60% of tripple A game studios now. Pretty soon it won't be easy for new games to pop up when the entire gaming market is owned by the people who make the consoles.

They couldn't afford to

That'll never happen. S/E is too big.

SE has a market cap just under 6b, based on the latest deals, could probably go for about 9b. Not challenging your assessment that SE was too expensive/big, but how did you come to that conclusion? Based on SIE's yearly profit?

Market cap is not the tell all sum value of a company. S/E is headquartered in Japan, but like many other companies, it's regional operations are divided and separated from the home operating market. Last time I looked into it, S/E had a global asset value of about 13B(but it's been a few years). Even for Sony, that's a chunk of change.

EDIT:
Looks like we were both wrong.
283B yen as of 3/2021 which translates to $2.4B.

I could swear it was much higher.

View attachment 234811

I dont remember if there was another front page announcement on this.
I didnt know at first, but Bungie was not under anyone else's umbrella, it was a stand alone company.

Epic games is missing from the Tencent section.
