Lenovo's Legion 5 Pro is a thin and light laptop that caters to professional users and gamers alike, outfitted with a rare 16:10 2560x1600 resolution for its monitor panel. Clad in blended aluminum and magnesium, this laptop aims to keep itself cool easily, and quietly.

Laptop specs are a bit meaningless nowadays : on paper you would think that the gigabyte would just be faster (lower res, better GPU, same CPU) but there's so many variables at play : 1662161118275.png

I wish you'd talk more about the display rather than just state that : "A 16-inch 2560x1600 screen offers a fantastic dot pitch, let me tell you."
How about the HDR experience, is it meaningless ? Is the panel backlit ?
A side by side comparison between a 138 dpi display vs 188 ?
UFO test ?
color delta ?
That's what would matter more, at least imho.

Laptop specs are a bit meaningless nowadays :
Yes and no. They are a good general indicator of what to expect, but yes, you do need to investigate further because different manufacturers and even different products from the same brand can vary in power use limits and such that can greatly affect performance.

That's very valid feedback that I'll take seriously, thank you. I think for some of that, I need to build out my testing tools a bit, but I can definitely talk more about the screens for sure.

I actually find that resolution (2560x1600, 165 Hz) interesting.

This is borderline desktop replacement, and taller resolutions are better for work.

The 16:10 aspect ratio has nearly disappeared from the market these days
The horizontal obsession has done away with variety for the most part :(.

Colorimeter or spectro would be useful additions, ie. X-Rite's i1 products. I don't think more expensive reference level meters would be worthwhile. Thanks for the review.

Laptop reviews are tricky. The GPU is using too much power so the CPU actually has less power, that's all, in your example. Get the 3070 Ti model instead, the 3080 ti uses the same chip anyways in laptops, unlike with desktops, the 3080 is just a 3070 anyways. I know Gigabyte is claiming to use Microsoft Azure AI in their latest models to get the CPU versus GPU power distribution right. Perhaps they have improved that.

Gigabyte is unbeatable right now. Forget MSRP, I see the Aero 16 for $1675 USD right now. That's the lineup more high end than the Aorus ones, this is the creator all metal laptop.

16.0" Thin Bezel QHD+ 2560x1600 miniLED Display, 165 Hz

Yes MINI LED with HDR 1000 and 100 percent DCI colour coverage, 16:10 ultra thin bezels on every side, 165 hz. Crazy good price. At least Gigabyte has back to school pricing right now.

12700h/3070 ti/16gb/1TB etc.

5 pounds light / 2.30 Kg.

Save almost $1000 USD compared to the Lenovo with upgraded storage, and get the world's best mini LED display in a laptop? Yes.

You can also get the Aero 17 with 4k/120hz mini led, and 2TB of storage, for $2150 USD. But I think 1600p 16:10 is better than 4k imo. 17 inch weighs more and is much wider, but not taller. It is 120hz instead of 165hz, and for the life of me 1600p and 4k look the same on a laptop.

Yeah but at 15.6 inch, a bit overkill PPI wise perhaps. 130 ppi is already very high, its higher than typical desktop 2560x1440 at 27.

16:10 sure.

+1 to that.

I kinda find the conclusion pretty barren. Focused extremely on the technical parameters. How about the keyboard? Does it feature the famous Lenovo ACCU-keyboard? Ease of maintenance? Fan behaviour? (I still have the infamous blend of business and gaming "the edge" series was. They released like 10 BIOS-es to fix that issue and downclocked the gt630 artificially, because the cooling couldn't keep up no matter what).

Laptop is a packaged experience. Sometimes even things like too little space between usb ports might be a nuisance if you have two fat drives to plug in and a dongle for a wi fi mouse.

This is something I look for myself, since I often have a mouse plugged in but then also need an external drive connected to take screenshots and benchmark results over to my PC to work with for the review. The number of ports matters too, and where they are.

And again, I'm left saying thanks for the feedback. Laptop reviews are still relatively new in number here on TPU, so I'm still learning what you guys want to see and hear about. After all, we do reviews to hopefully generate good conversation, so what interests you is super important and will shape future reviews.

I bought last years legion 5 pro with the 3070 and AMD CPU. The panel is the real gem of the machine. The GPU, CPU, RAM and storage all perform in line with everything else. But the clarity of the panel coupled with the extra real-estate due to the aspect ratio make it a beast. I game on an 3440x1440 ultrawide at home, but travel a lot for work so I bought a gaming laptop to take on the road.

The panel on the laptop has a great picture and is better then my Predator x34 at home. I have an older model x34 and it does not have HDR. But there is an immediate difference in the picture. The x34 cost as much as the laptop in 2015 and this laptop has a better picture.

This is just my personal opinion and I dont have any type of testing. But I think the monitor is the most important part of a gaming machine as that is where everything is seen. So you could call me a monitor snob and I love this laptop's picture.
