Remnant 2 is out now, with support for NVIDIA DLSS Super Resolution and Frame Generation and DLAA. Also supported is Intel's Xe Super Sampling and AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution. In this mini-review we compare the image quality and performance gains offered by these technologies.

A few takeaways
  • DLAA is god tier, best AA in the business right now, no contest.
  • DLSS and XeSS offering generally superior IQ and detail to native w/TAA, bar one type of artefact not present with TAA
  • Another example of XeSS 1.1 in DP4a performing the same as FSR 2.2, while offering superior image quality
Once could be random, twice is starting to correlate, if this trend keeps up, why would an AMD user want to use FSR over XeSS?

It's no wonder AMD appear to be blocking competitor upscaling, they're getting bodied on quality and compatibility on PC.

Using stills seems pointless. I'm looking at 1440p (my res), and the FSR2.2 looks as good as, if not better than DLSS. Almost all other options make the hair a blur. I understand the shimmering would be crappy, and you'll see it in the video, but the stills don't back up the written summary. I know they're there for visual info, but if that info doesn't agree with the conclusion, it seems in conflict, and given the partisan nature of red versus green, muddies the water. One example:

The hair is almost identical, but what I can't show with a static slider is the wall. It's way more blurred with DLSS.

The blurry wall:

Edit: I watched the YT clip. I'm not really seeing the shimmer? I saw it demonstrated clearly on the cyberpunk clips from a while back. It was really noticeable, quite bad TBH. But not so much here.

For clarity, I'm on a 4070ti. Not used AMD since the HD7970.

Just look at the vegetations and you can see that FSR2.2 presentation has lots of shimmerings, slightly lesss with XeSS and DLSS has no shimmering.

YT compression suppresses a lot of visible shimmerings too, it's much easier to notice when playing the game.

As for DLSS being blurry, use Sharpen+ within GFE, that sharpening filter is quite legit :D

It's also evident the FSR 2.2 pass uses sharpening by default where DLSS no longer does, don't mistake sharpening for detail - but if it is to your taste, it can still be applied to TAA/XeSS/DLSS

You see my point about using stills though? It doesn't help the conclusion.

Not really because people can use Balanced/Perf upscaling mode + Sharpen filter and it would look much sharper than DLSS Quality in still shots, but in motion DLSS Performance mode would shimmer as much as FSR2.2 Quality mode

I do not see any shimmering in the clip. Maybe it is related to the panel used? On a well configured QLED, FSR looks clearly best to me. XESS seems to be worst. I hope HDR was not activated in windows. This can mess things up, even if auto HDR is disabled.

XeSS produce better image quality than FSR, yes sure, if the blur was something good

I know people are knit picking but while playing the game at 4k i used both DLSS and FSR to see if i could notice a difference while actually playing and i couldn't. Yeah if i stopped and looked i though DLSS+Sharpening was a marginal better but not by much.

4K DLSS Quality vs 4K Performance (with Sharpen+) comparison, DLSS Performance would look much sharper while still 20% higher FPS than DLSS Quality :D

DLSS.Balanced + Frame Generation have better motion stability than FSR.Quality at 4K LOL

Seems like disocclusion artifact is still a big problem with FSR2.2

Man that game looks like shite..... Would be decent looking for an Xbox one/PS4 game not a 2023 release.....

Really? Looks much much better than RE4 Remake to me, but yeah it still falls short of being next gen worthy.
Considering this is an AA game, it's not too bad, devs probably spent minimal effort in making the game look the best it can be

I much prefer the way Gears 5 looks and that is a 4 year old Xbox One game..... I'm excited to see what the Coalition can do on UE5 because so far the engine looks bad in every released game..... Immortals of Aveum is next I guess but I don't care for how it looks either.... Hopefully this has mostly to do with UE4 to UE5 ports just being bad vs the actual engine just being shite.

RE4 Remake would look a lot better if they didn't use the most awful implementation of RT reflections I have ever seen and supported better AA methods out of the box. The RE engine is pretty old at this point it does some things well others not so much.... It is 6 years old after all.

Wonder if its just a small monitor thing because even sitting 15 feet away from my 65 inch oled watching the video and the shimmering artifacts and disocclusion are super obvious on the right

On the brick wall, DLSS looks a blurry mess, however that might be a low resolution texture so the original look?

Hard to judge because of this kind of stuff as need to see the image without either DLSS or FSR, and of course dont know how things look with movement, like shimmering issues.

Nvidia is the best, clearly that texture was supposed to be smeared metal. Jensen did say that creating more new pixels from less information will definitely provide better image quality!

These upscaling shenanigans need to make their way to the trash asap. Building rigs with top end hardware and monitors only to destroy the imagine quality with upscaling is one of the most oxymoronic trends I’ve ever witnessed.

I don't like having to resort to any of these to get the performance that should be there without any upscaling. But I also can't detect the differences highlighted in the text, and yes my eyesight is good, I don't even need to wear glasses.

Once again AMD fans mistake extra sharpening for image quality/details  Don't get me wrong, FSR 2 isn't bad but both XeSS and especially DLSS are just superior. If you want more sharp image with either of those two, just add sharpening yourself, easy.

When you are playing the actual game can you tell the difference though? So in the end does it really matter?

Well your options in this game are mud textures with DLSS/XeSS, or over sharpened, they’re both gonna look bad; FSR at least retains the detail in the truck trailer image.

That and the wall are some astonishingly bad showings for texture quality with DLSS, not shot is enabled it in any game of textures are going to look that bad.

I played through the game on my desktop with DLSS Balanced + Framegen, but testing out how my laptop (5980HX+6800M) handled things I noticed XeSS bizarrely performs more consistently than FSR2 while looking significantly better. First time I've seen that, but I do think if a game has XeSS I might default to that for now on with my laptop...

I think people are so used to seeing smearing FXAA/TAA over the years they've become conditioned to equate blur with good AA lol.
