Dragon Age: The Veilguard finally brings us back to the fantastic Dragon Age Universe. Built on Frostbite, the graphics are good, and there's support for RT and upscalers, too. In our performance review, we'll look at the game's graphics quality, VRAM consumption, and how it runs across a range of contemporary graphics cards.

I find it interesting how Nvidia & AMD just flipped in how good they scale at lower resolutions. It was a big criticism for Ampere vs RDNA2.

It implies RDNA3 has too little cache. 7900XTX goes from slower than 4070Ti at 1080p to faster than 4080S at 4K. I've seen similar things in other games.

Uh, why? EA has moved all the in-house studios to Frostbite more than a decade ago. Was it just meant that FB by itself is a rare sight nowadays?

It is likely owed to the 7900 XTX's significant advantage in raw memory bandwidth rather than the amount of cache. Even though it runs at 24 Gbps, the 256-bit bus used in the AD103 is significantly narrower - and you'll see pretty dramatic drops in performance in the XT and GRE models which run on 320- and 256-bit buses respectively.

That's a good point, I meant vs the general market, it's not like there's so many EA game releases. Will rework the text

I probably will wait to play this game when Steam Deck 2 comes out, I feel like it is a game I will enjoy on the handheld, plus price will be really cheap by then, and more polished.

It is steam deck verified.

But W1zz, this is simply untrue. When can we get TPU to cover such amazing releases as *checks* Madden NFL 25, EA Sports College Football 25, EA Sports FC 25 and NHL 25. Surely, all certified bangers and all running Frostbite. The inquiring minds need to know!
This was all in jest, obviously. I just find EA Sports lineup ridiculous. And yeah, half of those even aren’t on PC.

Yeah I looked at the same list a few minutes ago ^^ I'd love to include FIFA 25 in my testing, but that does have the horrible launcher and Denuvo 5 activations per day, and EA anti-cheat and EA login

Hey W1zzard, any clue why my 7800X3D is being pegged at 75%-100%? How was your CPU usage during testing? I really wonder how this game scales with CPU arch, core clocks and number of cores available. I've seen comments that users with older CPU's but more cores tend to get lower usage overall.

The cache's hit rate decreases with resolution so it's unlikely to be due to that. It's pretty odd scaling though.

going to be a funny sight once more and more games have RT on at the lowest settings - AMD will simply not be able to keep up with nvidia

Bioware has had issues with Frostbite and Respawn was allowed to use Unreal for Fallen Order and Jedi Survivor. Anthem and Andromeda especially were rife with technical problems. IIRC, documentation on Frostbite was poor. Ironically, Inquistion, their first game in Frostbite was the most technically sound game they've done in the engine. They did a really good job, from technical standpoint, with Veilguard. By all counts, not just Techpowerups, it runs well on a wide varitey of systems. Although the facial animation looks to be a step back from Inquistion from what I've seen.

I genuinely forgot about Respawn. Mea culpa. To be fair, they also used Source for Titanfalls and still use it for Apex Legends, yeah. Though I shudder to think what “issues” they had with Frostbite considering what their work with Unreal looked like in Jedi games. Especially Survivor. They patched it up somewhat, but still.

For Andromeda, Frostbite was a poor choice. Reportedly, the engine assumed a FPS and had to be fought with to accommodate a RPG.

EA started pulling all the stops (no DRM, Steam on day one, Steam Deck verified, etc.) when they noticed how the interest in the game was terrible. The game's preorders were below Farming Simulator 25 a couple months ago.

You weren't totally wrong the first time, though.

With Iron Man and Rene/Sims5 being confirmed to use UE5, along with WRC already there, it looks like EA is indeed moving towards Unreal Engine for anything that isn't sports and Battlefield (though I would even be on the fence regarding this last one).

The thing with Veilguard is its development took no less than 10 years as it got into development hell for a long time, or rather the time it took Andrew Wilson to figure out he couldn't turn everything into GaaS.

When UE5's 2020 demo swept everyone off their feet in 2020, Dreadwolf already had 6 years of development in Frostbite. My guess is the main reason this game isn't using UE5 is because it was supposed to have released like 4 or 5 years ago.

Not particularly surprising, the game itself is a mid action game that, at this point, has basically nothing in common with Origins at all, so no original fan of the series would be particularly interested. Nor would core RPG players in general - it isn’t one. Trotting out this after BG3 has definitely shown that classic style RPGs are absolutely commercially viable is hilarious, though I suppose it was too late to course-correct. The fact that it’s supposed to be Dragin Age, the series that BioWare had created as a “back to the roots, PC-first RPG” as opposed to Mass Effects more “action and console oriented” experience just shows how much this company has lost the plot and homogenized everything into one gray goo. Three fucking abilities on a shared CD and a primer/detonator mechanic is something I expect to see in ME, not a Dragon Age game.

Don’t think so, this is like the third iteration of DA4 as I understand it and was made in the last 3-ish years. Hence the trend chasing with attempts to imitate nu-GoW combat.

Too bad the game is ruined right before the 20 hour mark. Terrible writing. Terrible voice lines.

Performance is amazing, Ultra with the RTX 3080 at 90fps? You can do that. 120 fps with the RTX 3080 at medium? Sure. The only issue is the starting area is much heavier than the rest of the game, so I actually increased my settings after I finished that part.

Frostbite on fire in this title though. Beautiful graphics, best of the year, and runs super fast.

If you have any issues, set everything to medium (with max textures if you have 10GB or higher VRAM card) and be shocked at the high performance.

The game has great combat, great visuals, great UI. I like the addition of dodge and parry and jump works properly with mantle and attacks also. I'm playing Mage.

The game is failing because bad writing and stuff that you can't say here, people are just dancing around the issue. The first trailer was a good indication, people were right to judge it harshly. They could have easily sold twice as many copies if they just wrote the characters better. Sold 4x more if the tone was better. I've played 20 hours of it and the game is excellent except for one area, the dialogue and writing.

I love Emmerich though. The old guy ended up being my favorite ha.

BTW you are using 12 abilities at a time. More than enough.

I am starting to see SkillUp's problem where in the late game you randomly run in to higher level enemies that have too much health. That's my only other concern. I was really annoyed when I ran in to an enemy 10 levels above me (a boss also) that took 30 minutes to kill because I was ice heavy and the enemy was ice resistant, VERY resistant. 30 minutes for one guy, was tiring. You can't swap weapons during combat and there was no warning like in other RPGs to stay clear of him. I should have just quit and reloaded but I stuck it out for 30 minutes.
