6950 XT or 7800 XT ?

Hello, everybody!

I just bought a new PC, but I have a doubt between theses two graphics cards. I've read some articles and its show that the 6950 XT has 10% more FPS. But in the others hands, the 7800 XT will be updated more in the future, she has an anti lag + system and she is cheaper. In my country (France) the 7800 XT is 8% cheaper. And maybe with futurs 7800 XT drivers the perf will be close to the 6950 XT ?

What do you think? I play in 1440p.

Also note that the 7800xt only is 263W TDP and the 6950xt 355W. Power+Heat is to consider.
Had a friend update to an 6950xt, nice card sadly his little case has now to run without the side panel or its just a giant hot box.

The 7800 XT is ~10% slower than the 6950 XT in raster and less than 5% RT if any at all. But the 7800 XT shows impressive overclocking compared to recent cards and IMO that tips an otherwise equivalent value over to the 7800 XT. Being a newer product (likely longer driver support) and lower power also pushes the 7800 XT as the better option.

What is the exact make of the first one?

But regardless of that you'll be able to OC your GPU. Silicon lottery most probably doesn't care about subvendors. Just seek for the best cooling and VRM solution you can find for your money.

7800XT if the price is as you say, it should be better in RT based and future AI based software, and uses less power and is cheaper.
And they do tend to improve performance over time.
Plus less Heat.

the 6950XT only if it's signifcantly cheaper and you have at least a high end! 850-1000W PSU. but i tend towards the 7800XT.

I'd get the 7800XT but wait a few weeks for the prices in europe to stabilise. Paying ~600eur or above for any 7800XT is nonsense.

Might be better of just waiting a little while as the 7800 might drop a little too.

I'd go with the 7800XT for the longer driver support alone. Also Hyper RX is 7000 series only.

They both seem very solid. Must be cool and reasonably audible even if you OC them hard (but not extremely). Amongst this couple, pick whatever fits your inner designer better and whatever offers better quality warranty in your region (I have no clue what French market realities are).

I'd go with the 7800 XT as well.

FWIW, I just ordered an ASRock RX 7800 XT Challenger 16GB OC but this is more of a backorder as it will take anywhere up to 3 weeks or so to be delivered. If I find another vender that can do better I'll cancel the order or failing that return it for a full refund. I may need a new PSU though as the recommendation is 700W and my RyZen 7950X / ASRock B650E PG Riptide WiFi / 32GB G.Skill Flare X5 DDR5 6000 based system only has a 650W. Might be OK, but also might not,...

Also of note, some nVidia cards are dropping in price likely due to the popularity of the 7800 XT. So you might find some 4070 cards for ~$550 or so. Not IMO enough to sway me but you know some people might go for it.

6950XT will mean new PSU for most ppl, or very high chance of random shutoff.

I think that applied more to the 6900XT the 6950XT is generally much better transients wise any quality 850w should be fine and even most 750w. I still would grab the 7800XT though lol.

I didn't need a new PSU when I got my 6800 XT, but...

Yup. I either needed to run with the side panel off or get a new case. I tried more case fans with 2x push and 2x pull (case closed) but that wasn't the problem as the CPU was chillin'. The card is big enough that your typical $50 narrow case doesn't let enough waste hot air get around it and out the top and back.

$95 Corsair 4000 Airflow completely fixed that with fewer fans and it's a dream to work in compared to the cheaper (but otherwise OK) cases I've been using for years. Hmmm everyone was right, there is a difference when it comes to cases when your GPU is physically large and uses well over 200W.

Also, if you have multiple monitors you may still be looking at sizably higher power consumes even on 7800 XT but a 6950 XT would probably higher. nVida presumably does better in such configurations with respect to multi-monitor setups but again I think a 7800 XT is a way better deal then a RX 4070.

7800XT, simple. RDNA3 is a lot better than 2, the gap is getting wider.

If you absolutely need AntiLag+, or if power consumption or heat or price are an issue, then get the 7800 XT. Otherwise, the 6950 XT is better.

I'm interested to see how much you 7800XT owners can tweak down the power consumption and still get comparable FPS out of the box. Since Ampere it's one of my favorite things to do.

My 3080ti shut down every 750/850w PSU I own all 6 of them. I tested a 3090 a dual 8 pin model from PNY that didn't shut any of them down so it can really depend on the specific card.

Yeah for sure -- I think it's more likely with the higher power draw cards to run into issues (sounds extremely obvious when I type it but alot of ppl don't consider this). If they're close to the same performance then i would go for the newer/lower power card - less headaches, probably less noise, less heat etc.

Interesting question, I might test it just for curiosity. :)

My wild guess is not as much as RDNA 2 users, as the IF and memory controller chips seem to sip away some power either way. At least my 60 FPS capped power consumption in Kingdom Come: Deliverance seems to be a tad higher than it was with the 6750 XT.

The difference is, when you tweak the 7800 XT, you start from 260-odd Watts, but with the 6950 XT, you start from 335.

Have your friend look into undervolting, the 6950 XT can run at a far lower wattage than it does in the stock configuration, and in many cases it increases your overclocking ability (if they're into that). There's lots of info out there on undervolt/overclock on that GPU.

Have your friend look into undervolting, the 6950 XT can run at a far lower wattage than it does in the stock configuration, and in many cases it increases your overclocking ability (if they're into that). There's lots of info out there on undervolt/overclock on that GPU.
I will custom loop his Pc this weekend so no no under Volting for now.
