Intel and Skype have signed a deal that will make Skype software identify the brand of processor in a PC. If it detects an Intel, Skype will allow up to 10 way conference calls, if it detects an AMD, it will restrict the software to up to 5 way conference calls.

...there are no specific instructions in Intel's current Pentium D or Core Duo chips that enhance the performance of VoIP applications, an Intel representative said. Skype is using an operation called "Get CPU ID" to identify the type of processor running on the PC. The Skype software has been preset to only accept Intel's chips as having the performance necessary to host conference calls of more than five people, the representative said.

In the good ol' US of A
dirty rotten corporate bass terds :banghead: . Someone is probably going to patch Skype to get around it anyway in the future :respect: . And whats with Intel trying to dominate over AMD? We all know that most gamers love their AMD Processors :rockout: . Which are the few, the proud, and more intelligent over the Dell buying computer illiterates. But thats my opinion :p

But I have nothing against Dell, just the majority of people who buy them.

Skype will never have me as a customer!

I love my AMD systems and if Skype is going to do something stupid like this then I will not support their product/service. I hope others will do the same.

It's not the point if it can be cracked or not. It's the fact that they would actually agree to this.

:banghead:

This really seems to breach anti-trust laws. Both EU and US. How can they get away with that without some form of proof. All the proof I see is that the Intel CPU and AMD are both pretty damn fast, well fast enough for VoIP. Usually the AMD is more cost effective than Intel, more bang for the buck so to speak. My AMD x2 3800+ is the lowest end of the dual core and it's bloody fast!!!!!!!!

This is just another desperate attempt by Intel to keep AMDs charging bull at bay. They are losing ground in both the PC and server market and they see it. Here's a brilliant idea, let's alienate half of our userbase by limiting their software, solely based on the CPU manufacturer they are running. I'd love to see the "deal" ( large sum of money ) that Intel gave Skype to do this. This just puts another nail in their coffin as far as I am concerned.

Simply migrate to better Gizmo client

This rude and desperate trick will only speed up the migration to skype's competitor and in my opinion much better VOIP product, Gizmo Project http://gizmoproject.com

Anyone interested in an open source product with jabber and google talk integration, free calls to other voip services and universities, conference calling from normal phones, free voicemail, free local us local access number exchanges.

check them out..
