Doesn't look like they improved efficiency much (based on performance claims) and the cards are still very power hungry compared to Nvidia equivalent.

In power consumption (CPU+GPU on charts)
9070XT = ~7900XT
9070 = ~7900GRE

Apparently this results are not gpu only, so it would be better to judge by differences rather than absolute values while comparing. Eg. 9070XT system consumes about 80w more than 5070TI.

Bare in mind this is GPU and CPU combined power, so the 304w quoted is there or there about, I think most people are ok with 300w these days, surely better than 450/600w space heaters

Just checked something around 250-270 Watt. I never saw more than 220 Watt according to the windows 11 pro amd gpu driver.

When you make a chart - name it properly in the title or write it there what it includes. When you criticise give an example:
Title could be, first line, big letters: TOTAL PC power consumption (CPU / GPU / MB / DRAM / PSU)

The first impression was such higher power consumption. than I checked my 7800xt and saw it is "garbage channel" hoax news again. 344 Watt only for a graphic card looks insane. When it includes some other components it looks better.

so at at 20 cents a kilowatt hour, 9070xt versus 7900xtx i’ll save 2 cents an hour!.
(100 watt savings… 30000 hours to save 600 dollars… so only 3years at 24 hours a day at full speed. ( stress test, so would the graphics card last that long running full blast for three years straight?) (of course that does not include the restof the pc components…



my point is power consumption savings don’t really matter in GPU.

These numbers are quite odd. Even so, it will still be more efficient than the previous generation, and the 9070 will undoubtedly be more efficient than the 5070.

One reason could be that a faster GPU can also let the CPU do more work which increases the total system consumption.

The 9070 is supposed to be a 220W card and the 5070 is supposed to be 250W. Yet the 9070 draws 60W more than the 5070... Either there is an issue with the graph or AMD screwed up.

7800XT doesn't consume 344W according to the chart, as already explained it's CPU + GPU power consumption as noted by the EPS + PCIe in the graph

I love how my choice of a decent card under 250W is basically just the 4070S and now the 4070S respun as a new card. Unfortunate. Hey… maybe the 5060Ti 16G will be a bit more interesting. it appears that the NV 5070/80 are using less than their rated TDP rather than the 070/xt using more well not as much more as it looks upon 1st glance anyway, if you account for the CPU usage in each bar, roughly 100w CPU usage and the rest is the GPU would be my rough guess, though without other details/the full review data I may as well be farting in the wind as there could be more variables and other things that we do not know from those few slides, either way a 400w CPU/GPU load under gaming is fine for the most part

They are definitely doing something right

Actually, even on my 12700KF, GPU is by a wide margin the main power consumption on my rig. The CPU typically runs below 10W, so even at idle the GPU is pulling as much or more power as my CPU. And in gaming, the CPU mostly runs 30-40W, maybe 120W on the most demanding games, while GPU can pull twice that.

So no, for most folks the GPU is by far the biggest energy consumer in their rig.
