Quick question that I'm sure I will be crucified for asking but don't care.

what do I set DMM to, AC or DC?

Probe It cable not available in UK :(

must be dc

So, got my Kingpin a week ago - now all i had to do was get rid of all fan noise. My D5 Vario pump makes no noise and my six Noctua's run at sub 800rpm, so they make a reassuring noise that my PC is actually being cooled. It's so quiet I can hear the gentle ringing in my ears - that's why I use water.

I tried some Benchmarks (Valley's giving me probs but that might be the Nvidia drivers) but a 20 min loop of Unigine Heaven at 1502Mhz was kept at and under 50 degrees, with the fans at 700rpm. Bliss :rockout:

Started here....

Then had to take it back out (hopefully avoiding any disasters like last time...)

Rip off the cooler (notice how well the paste had been applied by EVGA)

Ill fitting water block (before all cleaning of card). The memory doesn't line up but I followed TiN's advice from Kingpin Cooling forums. Bit scary tbh. You have to create extra areas for Vram and also take out a bolt from the block so it fits.

Jump forward past the terrifying parts where I couldn't think about pics

Cool thing is the Bitspower block has some LED points so once I'm settled with it and sure it's not badly mounted, I'll get some bling colours in.

I'm allowed to be indulgent and selfish - my old 780ti Classy's are up for grabs, see the thread:
http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/t...y-active-ends-8-7-more-to-come.202061/page-39 post 964.
Very cool card, I would have trouble removing that cooler just because it looks so great (But then again Water OP). Its a good looking card and block for your system, I would love to have a set especially seeing EVGA have the right idea about outputs on the card.

Looks good, glad you enjoy it and like making us all jealous :p

^^^ BAD A$$ ^^^

The amusing thing is (and I knew this before purchase) is that it wont clock much higher than a good 980ti. Maxwell really only hits 1500-1550Mhz on ambient. Kingpin really was meant for LN2 (something I won't be doing). That said, running at 1500Mhz on about 1.16 volts and staying under 50 degrees is kind of silly.
get to the nearest ice cream factory or storage and ask for some dry ice and then build some dice block or maybe the pump will be able to push some nonfreezing liquid through heh... but dont suffocate on it when it turns into the gaseous form, co2 is heavier than other air components, so it fill your room from the ground up like an invisible liquid. your pet, who may live near ground, like hamsters, dogs, can turn into canaries in a coal mine this way. so yeah, air ventilation at floor level is advised.

Like I say, I'm happy.

If anybody wants to criticise EVGA, or the merits of capitalism, please do it in another thread. And while @terroralpha can bring in that bullshit about more money than sense please don't sling it anywhere near me. I buy what I want and lack of sense has nothing to do with it and I give away what I want as well.

i wasn't knocking on your choice on buying the KPE card. the card is great and it adds things that no other model of the 980 Ti has. i'm sure you know what they are so I wont tell you what you know. i should have been more clear. I was talking about EVGA's tiered pricing of the different KPE variants. like the $1050 USD price tag for cards with an ASIC score of 80% or over. At that price it makes more sense to buy a Titan X for the added cores and memory and water cool it.

It's actually pretty up front as far as ASIC binning goes. Lucido has already told prospective buyers that ASIC quality isn't that great a factor for Maxwell OC'ing for the bulk of users (including those using the systems 24/7).

There is already a thriving market for "golden sample" CPUs. Buying bulk lots, testing for OC qualities, and boxing up and reselling those that don't make the grade. Unscrupulous (r)etailers won't tell you the part has been deemed average (or below) but effectively nullifies the silicon lottery for the prospective buyer. Other people, like myself, are more up front about the process since I build bespoke watercooling systems and require good "clockers". Of the 35 or so 2600K's I swapped in and out of benchmark system, a couple hit 5.0-5.2GHz (one of which I still use at 4.8), maybe a dozen more were solid at 4.8-4.9 (and were used for builds) - the rest were resold on the understanding that the owner could only expect 4.7-4.8 well within Intel's VID range.
If you check places like eBay, you will also see graphics cards that have undergone the same process - new but opened, never registered, and usually less than two weeks old. The owner usually citing some implausible reason for sale (if any is given) for multiple cards spread out over multiple accounts. If anything, the EVGA marketing cuts out gambling factor - either through genuine distro sealed parts, or pre-binned by others.
It wouldn't surprise me to see other AIB/AICs follow suit TBH.
At that price it makes more sense to buy a Titan X for the added cores and memory and water cool it.
Kind of depends what end purpose the card is being put to. Titan X is rapidly losing ground to the 980 Ti in benchmarking due to the higher power limits afforded by the designs than the reference only Titan X. The KPE certainly offers more tweaking options, so then you're down to trying to put a price tag on an enthusiasts hobby, where the cash expenditure means different things to different people depending upon their circumstance.

As @HumanSmoke says, the binning has helped those that want it for extreme over clocking focus on a better chance.
The card was sold in very limited quantities and in a manner the 'unknowing' would have been oblivious to. It went through EVGA'S own site and most folk that were keen on buying were on the forums, including some I've seen on TPU reselling chips they've been binning themselves.
Having owned an original Titan I know the risks of flashing and over volting so to me the Kingpin is a better option, especially the power limit.
I can see why some would see it as a rip off but for the overclockers on ice and LN2, it gives a better chance (not guarantee) for them to achieve more.

I agree with you man, the regular PCB is so crappy it makes the additional cores irrelevant for overvolting under exotic cooling, I think I've been lucky the few times I benched at 1.4v on those VRM.

How's the HOF by the way? The Galax one.

Dunno... I don't have one. But the super LN2 edition ones were request only. And probably as much as the higher ASIC Kingpins.

This one looks awesome, Galax's HOF also. The Lightning will probably be awesome as well but knowing MSI it's gonna launch when Pascal is almost out -.-

Playing with it more now - 1551Mhz at a silly 1.16-1.18v. Stable so far. Needed more volts for 1541 and 1551 (at current level). Was stable at 1.13v at 1531!

EDIT: Looks like 1561 is my limit. Crashing and locking and any more voltage isn't helping (little increments from 1200-1215 no help). Oh well, have to settle for 1561Mhz core @1.2v. Memory next....

I really have lucked out with my silicon. 1470mhz:shadedshu: I don't think water will help me. Vally temps are 55-60c. Maybe I need a bigger power supply.

Power supply shouldn't matter on air or water. The voltage won't be high enough to increase it that much? Make it colder.....

I'm not touching voltage because it's not making any difference. Will wait for a waterblock. Online calculator rekons my system (with CPU OC) is using 788W It's a 750 EVGA G2 PSU, so I don't know.
gpu-z.jpg
Ignor the VDDC it always says 1.2 under load but it's not. Do you always get a perfcap reason? Even if your just running at a nice easy 1500mhz? Or do you only get that when pushing for 1561 sort of thing? I get it every time. Or some times it's just Velrop or just VOp.
Hows the mem OC going? I've been able to do +500mhz, and mem OC is making a big impact on my Valley scores.

Just my luck - starting losing stability when i ran the full screen benchmark (ran a full bench at 1541Mhz/7600Mhz but the fps score was only 121 ish). I can game at 1500 no probs and my memory is only +300 just now but I'm more than happy. I dont think the perfcap is right for Maxwell. I'm neither out of volts or juice with my 133% power limit on stock bios.
