I've had newer stuff, but it just doesn't hold my attention like the older AMD products.

I love the Phenom II platform, it's by far my favorite (hence the avatar). If you look at the 1100T, AMD's flagship Phenom II, it still holds it's value very well... in part these chips are still powerful and can still crunch numbers very well. Honestly, who needs more than six cores? Not to many people out there really use their CPU at the limit.

The AMD Phenom II coupled with fast DDR3 1600 and set with tight timings is gonna give you (or at least me) plenty of power to navigate in todays technologically evolved world. Add an SSD and you are off to the races!

The only problem with the Phenoms is the lack of proper sse4 and avx extensions, games and programs start to need them. Beside that, they can still fight.

Agreed, no matter how nice a cpu was or performed in yrs gone by, in today's computing world they only competitive to a certain degree.

Im happy they work with Windows 10... that's all that matters to me. And if you look at the percentage of people here who actually "game" I think that number might be less than you think. And just out of curiosity, who all here uses games or programs that run SSE4 or AVX extensions?

MeGUI and PCSX2 for me, that I know of... Also any stability testing program. CPU mining makes use of those too, but it's almost not worth mentioning because even with that CPU mining still sucks too bad to even run, unless you're just trying to create more heat on purpose like I did a few days ago when it was cold here. :laugh:

The only one for me is PCSX2. Has to be turned down to SSE2 on K10 parts, and it does seem to make a difference in texturing in a few games that are a little pickier. Updating to a chip with full SSE3/SSE4 support allows some more stability and more tweaking to get settings where they need to be for those picky games.

Project cars 2... now that sounds like a game I would like.

I have more work to do today. First, I have "clone" one of my solid state drives and put the 2nd SSD drive in my HP Pavilion Slimline. I am running an E8400 right now but the kind folks over at bios-mods.com made a custom bios for me (so I can run the QX6850 quad core). Only problem is on BIOS install I get a "BIOS is write protected" error. So that might be a deal breaker... we'll see. Updates to follow!

So far so good we have the SSD cloned/copied over with Windows 10 and all my programs. I use the EaseUS Partition Master software. Really a great way to manage and modify partitions.

Have to use switch in your flash utility to disable write protect.

No argument there, you make a good point but one limiting factor with those platforms & even with AM3+, is they are really showing their age with game performance in today's world of AAA games. Even with optimized (for PC) game engines like Bethesda's creation engine in FO4 & even futher back with Skyrim.

Bur IF they are building a new rig today or even upgrading, I don't think they are going to use older platforms such as these.

There were new extensions with the FX series of CPUs developed by AMD, but here we are some 6 yrs later & devs still have not used those extensions for popular apps today. Still, it was a nice try from AMD to steer direction of this instead of following Intel nearly all the time with their CPU extensions.

The only time AMD managed to be ahead of Intel in extensions, was with amd64 (X64). SSE4a and FMA4 are almost useless. GCC and good video transcoders know how to use them.

IF one considers for example FX-8350 with i7-4770K (2012-13) in the market place & both being 8 threaded cpu, BMI1 & XOP were missing from i7-4770K.
But like FMA4, 3 AMD extensions not broadly utilized by devs even in 2018. Sandy bridge line of cpus have even less extensions.
