Intel Corporation and Advanced Micro Devices today announced a comprehensive agreement to end all outstanding legal disputes between the companies, including antitrust litigation and patent cross license disputes.

In a joint statement the two companies commented, "While the relationship between the two companies has been difficult in the past, this agreement ends the legal disputes and enables the companies to focus all of our efforts on product innovation and development."

Under terms of the agreement, AMD and Intel obtain patent rights from a new 5-year cross license agreement, Intel and AMD will give up any claims of breach from the previous license agreement, and Intel will pay AMD $1.25 billion. Intel has also agreed to abide by a set of business practice provisions. As a result, AMD will drop all pending litigation including the case in U.S. District Court in Delaware and two cases pending in Japan. AMD will also withdraw all of its regulatory complaints worldwide. The agreement will be made public in filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Good, a good $1.25 Billion for Bulldozer R&D, this is exactly what AMD needs right now.

AMD needs to get head outta azz, they can give them $1222222222 billion but with no competition its useless.

To put it simply:

Intel paid $1.25 billion (about 835 million euro) to AMD, to stop the anti-trust cases in Japan and the U.S.

Needless to say, this comes after the $1.5 billion that Intel already paid to the E.U., and the $26 million in South Korea.

I guess AMD was right all along? lol

Im so happy that AMD and Intel can get along (kind of) now we need the fanboys to get along:laugh:

amd might be right but intel is rich over this. Wonder whos right?

I have a feeling that AMD is giving up more than just a bit of CPU IP for this to come about, and Intel is likely going to pay more out in IP rights.

AMD should knock 10 bucks off the price of every cpu sold until it reaches 1.25 billion.:rockout:

I imagine it's cheaper for intel to just "pay" AMD to drop the antitrust cases, than for them to be found guilty and likely end up having to pay more than $1.25 billion.

But still, nice to see AMD get that. How far into the red was AMD anyways?

I think the EU case has put Intel in a bribing mood. XD "Have some money and leave me alone."

AMD's total assets were −$7.675 billion as of 2008. AMD is still in hot water but this agreement will certainly help them.

This is some good news for AMD . . . at least for the moment. I think Intel has realized they're so far ahead, and AMD is so far behind that if the cases did go into court, they wouldn't stand much of a chance and might end up having to fork out even more than $1.25b . . . and possibly have the courts decide on the licensing rights.

Give it a couple more years, though, and I'm sure we'll see the bickering firing up again.

Man, your avatar couldn't be more appropriate. "Might makes right," eh?

Intel got off cheap with this. :P

I feel like that too. Weren't there 9 billion figures being tossed around recently? Hopefully they're getting some sort of deal on the Intel IP AMD is dependent upon...might even be why the figure is so low...Sort of want to read the agreement if anyone finds a copy somehow.

although I wish they would have been able to settle for atleast 2 billion or more. this was a smart move for AMD. instead of letting the world find Intel guilty and making them look good- now they get paid instead of watching governments pockets get lined with their deserved money

You know, in the end, I don't even care about the money -- that's not important. AMD lost so much when they were effectively pushed out of the Japanese market by Intel's monopolistic business practices that no amount of money can make up for it.

It's the "AMD will also withdraw all of its regulatory complaints worldwide" part that's sad. What the hell.

You don't want to get into that argument.

Well the right people got the payoff I guess. I'm happy. At least the crooked ass politicians wont see a damn dime. At least we can stop arguing now about this.

Id rather AMD get the money than some state get it and piss it away

What no 1.25 billion in herb [I.R.A]_FBi?

After all AMDs color is green.

thas a lotta greens

So now that Intel is forking over 1.25 Billion in cash , Does this mean now we can put this all behind us ? Maybe now AMD can focus on making a CPU that can compete in the desktop market ? Or make a Video card that doesn't OVER HEAT ? Well they have the money to do this now right ?

who knows. I am sure they have to spend some of that to keep their investors happy. I wish we knew the rest of the story cause I doubt its a cut n' dry 1.25 billion

Um none of my ATI cards overheat. Maybe you have crappy ventilation in your rig?

Second that, even the reference 4850 survives perfect intact under that cooler.
The temps really aren't that bad as long as the hot air doesn't get trap in the case.

You mean like they did a few years ago with the Athlon 64, and it was so good Intel told its customers that if they bought any of AMD's chips instead of Intels shiatty overheating Pentium IV's, that Intel would cut them off?

You mean a chip like that?

Jesus, I'm starting to agree with MailMan -- some people are just never going to understand this, and there's no point arguing about it anymore.

Hope AMD will use that money wisely...
