AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Black Edition Surprisingly Overclockable

Memory 2GB G.Skill DDR2 800
Video Card(s) Sapphire X850XT @ 580/600
Storage WD 160 GB SATA hard drive.
Display(s) Hanns G 19" widescreen, 5ms response time, 1440x900
Case Thermaltake Soprano (black with side window).
Audio Device(s) Soundblaster Live! 24 bit (paired with X-530 speakers).
Power Supply ThermalTake 430W TR2
Software XP Home SP2, can't wait for Vista SP1.
When AMD first released the 5000+ version of the Black Edition series of processors, it seemed pretty unimpressive. However, the Black Edition processors are a lot like the old FX processors: they come with an unlocked multiplier, and are hand-picked for overclocking. And so, while the Black Edition processors may not be the best at stock clocks, they certainly are good at overclocking. Just as an example, a Chinese overclocker was able to push his 5000+ Black Edition to a respectable 3.5GHz on stock cooling.

Mmm, of course this wee beast comes out AFTER I get the fx-62 and appears to be an even better chip. Here's me getting kicked in the nuts: :nutkick:
 
wonder if any1 could make this black edition a 4ghz edition?? :)
 
I'm assuming they're implying he used an AM2 stock HSF from retail cpus as to my understanding none of the Black Edition processors come with a HSF...seems funny to me

It is possible that he used the stock cooler to the from the regular 5000+.

I love that screenie- goodness knows why it was so weird- it just started going crazy in CPU-Z so I kept pressing prtscrn until I got the highest one recorded!:D

lol he would've made world news if that picture had honestly read his proc speed, in fact, you should've tried to validate it as well as take the pic haha just think if it had validated? you'd be famous and could sell that thing for a ton of money :D

should be a piece of cake considering he got 3.5 on air with only 220 fsb, just hook some water up and you're good to go :toast:

Even on liquid nitro I think you'd be lucky to get 4 ghz. I think the records are like 3.7. Yes, that was 90nm, but it's really not as a great limit of the process (anymore) as it is the architecture. Even that poor mem controller has to clock to that. Although she shines when clocked high, the latencies are incredible.
 
yep, wonder if the architectural limit will stop people before 4ghz
 
shouldn't be an architectural limit, as the fx-60 hit well north of 4GHZ on good phase much less liquid nitro. I'd say that 4GHZ is porbably possible and would have been hit on the 6000 if all the major guys didn't go intel before the 6000 was released. on this chip, maybe, but I'd bet the 6400 would probabaly hit somewhere north of 4GHZ.
 
if this chip had been out a while ago i may have made the jump to AM2 b4 upgrading to a 939 opty lol..

makes me wonder tho.. how this would compare to say a dual core Phenom??

because hitting upwards on 3.5Ghz on a dual core easily says alot, but the Phenom has been reported to be having issues with higher clock speeds (me hopes not tho)

Newer architecture possibly lower speed, older architecture higher speed... I know core frequency isnt the be all and end all, but it certainly helps.

But, one could so easily comment that if AMD has done this via a respin of a current processor chip, what they could acheive with similar techniques on a brand new architecture. Quite exciting actually :)

You're right, pop over to hwbot. There's at least one 4GHz 6000+. Haven't checked in a while, so there might be more now.


EDIT: 2 6000+ over 4GHZ, and 3 6400+. The top 6400+ made it to 4.2GHz on TEC.

They had the same issues with this type of core as well (65nm Athlon x2 (brisbane?)) Voltage leakeage is one of the reasons they haven't been clocked as high as the 90nm Athlon X2s. Obviously there are some good ones though! :D
