AMD (NYSE: AMD) today announced that its AMD Opteron 6200 Series processor family, based on the new "Bulldozer" architecture, was chosen as the winner of The Linley Group's first annual Analysts' Choice Awards. The awards recognize the top processor products of 2011 in several major categories including embedded, mobile, PC, server, design IP and related technology. To choose each winner, the Linley Group's team of technology analysts focused on merits of the leading products that began shipping between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2011.

"Our analysts are deeply familiar with processor products and technology, having conducted extensive research in order to deliver the firm's popular publications and reports," said Linley Gwennap, founder and principal analyst at The Linley Group. "We chose the winners on the basis of their performance, power, features and cost as appropriate for their target applications."

This latest award for the AMD Opteron processor comes on the heels of the recent Technology of the Year honors from InfoWorld. AMD Opteron 6200 Series processors along with the Dell PowerEdge R715, which is based on the latest AMD Opteron processors, have both received 2012 Technology of Year awards from the publication.

"The AMD Opteron 6200 Series processor rose to the top of our list of nominees due to its leading performance for high-volume, dual-socket servers," said Bob Wheeler, senior analyst at The Linley Group. "Reported SPEC_rate2006 baseline scores show the AMD Opteron processor Model 6282 SE delivers about 20 percent greater integer performance and nearly 40 percent greater floating-point performance[ii] than comparable processors from the competition and costs about 40 percent less[iii]."

I expect this to stay cricket chirping quiet. No one wants to see cheap opteron servers banging xeons around. :rolleyes:
 
Well good to see the AMD optmorons are doing well in a category against Intel chips of the same purpose.

if you want a gaming computer get a core i7
if you want a supercomputer, get a quad G34 system.
Not saying that you can't build a supercomputer with intel, but the cost of G34 based motherboards and cpus is really low compared to the competition.
G34 does makes sense, a lot.

Would have expected those figures inverted (+40% INT, +20% FP). Wasn't BD rigged for superior integer performance?

32 Cores -- 32 Threads
128GB DDR3-1333 RAM

Xeon Setup
2x Xeon X5690
12 Cores -- 24 Threads
48GB DDR3-1066 RAM

Seems a tad lopsided. It's great AMD won, but why didn't they compare them using identical RAM setups, or as close to identical as possible? Running one of the setups with 33% the amount of RAM as the other, and using RAM that's slower as well, seems like a weak way to do comparisons.
 
Maybe that's what the platform supports? :confused:
 
Let's say those two platforms cost the same, which one would you buy? In this case the AMD costs cheaper and offers a dump load more.
