Check the spec. tables.
That 965 BE we use in charts is the old 140W version.

O ok yep fair enough, but its still better then three of the other AMD CPU's 955/970/ and the 1055T and is clocked higher, so still very impressive

If AMD has refined their fabrication process over the life of the Deneb series, and it seems obvious they have, perhaps 4.0GHz overclocks will be more common?

I don't think so. The most limiting factor for higher overclocks with air cooling is the K10.5 architecture itself. So while AMD can improve the results over time, like they did, I really don't think that we'll be seeing that many Deneb cores running ~ 4.0 GHz 24/7. They get insanely power hungry at those speeds, plus the increased heat output... and the performance gains aren't allays big enough to justify it.
Check the graph bellow... that's 75 W increase in cpu consumption only after ~400 MHz clock increase. And that's with just 1.475 V core voltage.

I guess I view the "target audience" for this particular CPU quite a bit more narrowly than you can afford to do as a reviewer.

Excellent conclusion :toast:

Better binned samples often have less current leakage, which in return results with slightly lower power consumption and better overclocking results. I believe that's what happened here.

Either way thanks for the review Omega. Im glad someone on TPU is doing CPU reviews. Which I might add you do an excellent job at.

Thank you for your kind words. I don't think TPU ever had a reviewer that talked so much and worked so little, but we're getting there somehow :slap:

ha well you take what you can get if you atleast do that then your already putting in 110% right? its not like they just hand chips out.

There's allays room to do better, and we will do better. Things just haven't worked out the way we planned this time, mixed together with some bad luck, lousy timing and so on. We will be launchinga new format for cpu reviews with Sandy Bridge, hope there will be a nice feedback and bunch of opinions so I can work out the quirks from the start

Its good to see your open to suggestion though. Most people are very critical and negative twords advice. Especially because they are reviewers and think they are above the average user to being with. If you have a head on you that lets you take advice think about suggestions and can handle constructive criticism Im sure the new format and future changes will be fantastic.

Bulldozer won't be a problem, we've got a great thing going with AMD... it's Intel that's kinda ignoring us :shadedshu

if it was so poor why was the first 65watt chip AMD? no one said that fabrication relates to better IPC. they have removed the cold bugs from there chips something intel still hasn't accomplished. how is fab intels game its outsourced to TSMC for some chips? thanks for a very fanboyish post that contained no facts that was derogatory towards AMD in an AMD review.

Intel has been on 32nm for over a year. They are scheduled for 22nm later this year. That says it all right there.

I don't know the exact dates for who had products at which power level but I'm pretty sure that Intel hasn't been hurting to produce CPUs at whatever TDP, voltage, clock rate they want to feed the market with. Just check their financials out.

Why on earth would it be wrong to criticize any of these companies? Not doing so is what is fanboyish. I said that a 3.6 GHz Phenom II is not exciting because that's only a 600 MHz jump in two years, and I think I'll stand by that. I still have one of their original Phenom II X4 940 BE CPUs from Jan 2009.
