AMD is just about complete with its top-to-bottom lineup of DirectX 11 compliant GPUs, whose series is codenamed Evergreen. Under this, the company has a GPU and its derivative targeted at almost every price point, from the entry-level Radeon HD 5450, to the fastest graphics card - Radeon HD 5970. With the onset of NVIDIA's first current-generation GPU codenamed Fermi, NVIDIA might attempt to reclaim the performance crown, and infuse competition in the higher-end segment. Currently there's no news of lower-end derivatives of Fermi.

Probably in response to Fermi, AMD is readying a new GPU architecture slated for release within this calendar year, in the second half. "We are ramping the ATI Radeon HD 5000 series now and look forward to refreshing the entire lineup in the second half of next year," said Dirk Meyer, chief executive officer of AMD, during quarterly conference call with financial analysts. His reference to "next year" was of next fiscal year (FY 2010), in context of him speaking at a quarterly conference call with financial analysts for FY 2009. The new series of GPUs is codenamed "Northern Islands". At this point in time, nothing much is known about the new GPU series. TSMC, AMD's main foundry partner for GPUs and motherboard chipsets, earlier claimed that it will be ready with a 28 nm production node by the end of this year. Whether the new GPU series makes use of the new fab technology is anybody's guess.

Interesting indeed, and good to see ATi rolling along nicely again, the 2900 was a big kick in their corporate pants.

2010? ratid .. so all the q1 2011 estimates cause "2010 was too early" were all wrong then?

wow, . . . . . . . nvidia might be f*cked if this is true, glad i didn't buy a HD5870

Plan to wait till...xmas? Why not wait for a couple of months more for NVIDIA's answer, or just a couple of months more for AMDs, and so on?

plan to wait till dec 31 2010 for a press release "we will have awesome fermi r900 parts out very soon", in feb 2011 you'll see the first articles talking about architecture but no product, in april the nda for press reviews will fall and in may you'll have decent supply of board in your stores

Fermi's late release is getting to you isn't it W1zzard?

yes someone will send me the late fermi .. or 2 .. or 3

for all that waiting it better get you firm

my 5850 saving is on the way and gaining steam, hopefully prices will come down to match :)

as much as i salivate over new technology, i have to wonder which,
if any of my old games will work with these new cards,
example my radeon 9700 could make aliens vs predator work
(albeit horrendously fast) but my new (agp) 3850 just doesn't want to know
i suppose only time will tell

This is what I was thinking all along... the next series took no time to design, which probably means they did another double up.

wow... just wow.

Fermi vs 6970. :nutkick:

It's fine really, as long as MS doesn't release DX12 in this year.

yah but performance-wise...

At least we will have some cheap fermis :rockout:

well well i said i was going to wait for the 6850 or 7850 looks like i wont have to wait as long as i was thinking. I make sure i get my moneys worth out of my cards my 9700m pro lasted till my 4850's.. and 28nm node dang i was thinking like 32nm but 28 is even better:rockout:

its just as fast as GTX285 vs 4870. :) (15-20% ?)

But what its faster in is diffrent, they've changed the ratio's of stuff this time around, cut off rops so they could stuff in more GPGPU stuff.

already got a GTX280 volt modded to 800mhz/1650/1300, only real upgrade for me is a HD5970 but I'm waiting for the prices to drop on them:)

ebay $100

:D do it while you can... 5xxx price are most like to drop soon...

If amd really wants to :nutkick: nvidia... they would just drop the 5xxx series massively right before fermi release.

get ahead stay ahead no more "answering" i want to see them "ask more questions" (challenging) it'll only give us what we want from the industry faster.

Hmmm Im still rolling with my three way 3870's...at first I thought I would wait for the 5800 series, but the second half of 2010 isnt that long off, becomes a game of patience.....and im torn...two 5850's next month, or two 6850's next 7 months...
