AMD is updating its Phenom II X3 triple-core processor lineup with the Phenom II X3 740 (PIB model: HDZ740WFK3DGI). With a clock speed of 3.00 GHz, the X3 740 succeeds the X3 720, although a Black Edition branding is expected, it can not be confirmed right now. Based on the 45 nm Heka core, the X3 740 features a total cache of 7.5 MB (3x 512 KB L2 + 6 MB L3). It features a bus multiplier of 15.0x which could be unlocked if it indeed is a Black Edition chip. It has a rated TDP of 95W. Following its launch tentatively in late September, it could end up being priced in the $130~$150 range, like its predecessor when it first hit shelves.

whoa! this looks good.
so like.. this is an alternative to buying the 720.. as opposed to an upgrade.. yeah?

Not bad -- did AMD discontinue the X3 710, though? Was just about to buy one of those until I saw it wasn't available on Newegg anymore. They had recently dropped the price from $129 down to $99, too -- it was a steal at that price.

naybe its possible to unlock one of these into a quad core?

I am trying to extend the life of my rig and was going to by a new cpu this week, now I am going to upgrade my monitor and wait for the unlock edition of this chip.

AMD has good ideas. I can put a new chip into an older board for a very good price and reap the rewards of an older but still very able gaming machine. I'm staying with AMD.

I see you guys already have the part number. Each Phenom II black edition begins with HDZ###. The normal versions begins with HDX###. If you have an energy efficient version it just begins with HD###. ### = modelname

With this info and the part number you can say its a black edition

Nice, the triple cores are a hot seller as they add that extra core for processes over the dual core, but dont destroy your wallet like a quad and still offer close performance, especially as a black edition.

3 ghz clock speed!?! nice hopefully its a Black Edition or there will be a BE alternative.....im looking for a cheap setup for my g/f's PC (my Backup) This definitely fits the bill!!

Yes they do a lot of preparing. But where the hell is Athlon II X 4

hopefully this is out before 2010.

AMD is cornering itself with some of these BE chips. Could they easily mass-produce 3.2, or even 3.4Ghz X3's? Yeah, probably, but they wouldn't overclock any better than these do. By catering their niche market specifically to overclockers, most of whom naturally expect a healthy boost above stock to be possible, they lose the ability to really run away with the clock speed on these, despite the ability of the silicon to do so.

Late September my ass. Release it tomorrow.

nice and cheap
