It was high time AMD updated its tiny entry-thru-mid GPU silicons to the new 28 nm fab process, Graphics CoreNext micro-architecture, and make them truly Windows 8-ready with DirectX 11.1 support. What better way to do those by giving them as big a launchpad as Radeon HD 8000M series branding, and a gala launch at the 2013 International CES? AMD's next-generation mobile GPUs are codenamed "Solar System," breaking away from the desktop GPU family codename of "Sea Islands." Among its members are those named after our planetary neighbours, "Mars" and "Venus," to name a few. The recent leak of a ASUS Vivobook featuring HD 8550M may not be a re-brand, after all.

Seeing here that some of the codenames will be "Mars" and "Venus", I was reminded of this:

NTK Holdings Limited

When I first ran into this I wasn't able to find much information; searching "Mars" and "FirePro" together yielded nothing. Is this somehow related to the 8000 series, or just a mistake?

That is just the company that makes the coolers on reference AMD cards.

Wavey (Dave B.) seemed to indicate the 8550 was not a rebrand.

Considering it's matched with a full trinity (384sp) at somewhere between 320-424mhz in that one laptop, it would make sense if 8550 were something like 256 @ 650mhz or something.

Still don't know what is what between Mars, Venus, and Sun, but logic dictates they are mobile versions of 8800 and below, inferred to be 384, 896, and 1792sp...and I would venture to guess not topping over 5ghz/256-bit, which would mean 1792 at 800mhz or slightly lower.
 
There will be rebrands in the low end segment that is controlled by OEMs. Both nVidia and AMD do it, it's out of their hands when the big dogs in the OEM market want something, they get it.

Big companies like Dell and Acer, and all the other vendors don't care if they rip-off people who buy pre-built PCs. Most of them will never know that their new graphics card is just a rebadge of last year's model.

If my insider sources once again check out, we are looking at the HD 8000 series (Especially the HD 8900 & 8800) as being a massive game changer in Performance and Energy Efficiency. Unfortunately these will also be priced higher at launch versus how much the HD 7000 series were priced.

Hopefully AMD will rectify its minor driver issues at launch, because these babies are going to be fast, something NVIDIA will have trouble competing with.

I cannot get into performance at this time, though I can safely say people running 7970 Xfire setups will get blown away by single card performance at super low power draw.

I will be upgrading my HD 6970 to a HD 8970 in due time. The mobile version will make for a great notebook upgrade :D

This HD 800 series represents a complete redesign. I find it difficult to see AMD re-branding. They will end up losing money IMO. You get more out of a new smaller manufacturing process.
 
Soooo... Do the chips run cooler the further the planet they're named for is from the sun?

It wasn't AMD that was rebranding was it? If I recall the companies (dell etc..) renamed the card to sell their PCs. From what I remember, one of them touted having an 8000 series a while back.
 
Will the 9000 series be codenamed universe? What will be after that then?

Yes agreed. AMD cannot control companies like HP, DELL etc.
 
nVidia should use Galactus, the planet eater.
